Kathie and I arrived in Munich after the flight from Brisbane via Singapore. We'll be happy when they get an Airbus 380 for this flight. The Airbus 330 and the Boening 777 are a great improvement on the old Boeing 747 - but even they are now feeling "tight" and they are quite uncomfortable for the long flight(s). We arrived in Mnich at 5.00am..to be greeted by an airport covered in snow and with mountains ofr snowe that have been scooped from the runways and terminal areas. Weather was a little brisk - with temp. at 0C..and snow forecast during the remainder of the day. Met Tim & Lee - former participants on our Austrian White Christmas tour - now living in Munich just 5 minutes drive from the airport. We took them into Munich and ... read more

I could not escape singing this Led Zeppelin song when traveling up the hill to Neuschwanstein castle. If you look at the pictures, it will be easy to see why. I truly found myself in a winter wonderland in the Bavarian alps and the continual repetition of the Zeppelin song in my head reflected the fantastic mood I was in. On my way up, I passed by scenes of families riding in horse carriages and children making snowballs, some left as messages to their father as he was lagging behind them. On its own, the newly fallen snow was beautiful...then I reached the castle. What makes Neuschwanstein so famous is that the Sleeping Beauty castle in Walt Disney World is based off of the design. I can certainly see why they used it as an example, ... read more

(The panorama above is from the top of Hafelekar about 8,000 ft above Innsbruck. Also, please excuse the smudge in some of the pictures and video. It seems I got something on my camera lens while at Oktoberfest and I had to clean the lens each time I turned the camera on. I obviously didn't always remember to do this.) We started out for Innsbruck from Schwangau for what turned out to be over 2 hours of mountain driving through the Alps; many hairpin turns and elevation changes. It was a spectacular ride, though. The Alps may not be as high on average as the rockies, but they remind me more or the Teton Range, very jagged and steep---so beautiful. We arrived at our hotel, the Penz, and it was a very modern steel and glass ... read more

We travelled to Innsbruck in Austria instead Liechtenstein. The main factor why made up mind to change our plans was distanse and time. Eventually we travelled to Innsbruck and that was good choice. While we were driving overthere we didn't use motorways because we found parallel way and that possible to drive from one village to another according the map. We wanted to get to know Austria a bit. Alps in Tyrol are higher than those in Germany and roads much more sinuous. Country is modern, that is visible anywhere. When we got to Innsbruck we noticed town looks as much bigger than it really is. I think we thought like so because Innsbruck hosted two Winter Olimpic Games - in 1964 and 1976. We spotted famous ski jump stadium Bergisel where Adam MaƂych broke the ... read more

I woke up to it raining, well there goes paragliding. I went down for breakfast which was in the pastry shop. they brought me a bowl or cornflakes, 2 buns, jams and spreads, coffee and even a slice of cake, yup cake for breakfast num num. I'm glad I brought my raincoat because it came in handy ALL DAY. I popped in and out of shops which was a bad thing because then I wanted to buy things. I did buy another journal which is really neat, well to me it is. I has a blood splatter on it and the end of the page marker is a bloody knife. After wandering around most the afternoon I caught a bus to the Swarovski crystal museum (mom are you jealous?) It was way better then I thought ... read more

I caught the train with the girl from Korea, we went to Munich together then went our seprate ways as I was going to Innsbruck and she to Salzburg. I love having this Eurorail pass, not only can I go then and where ever I please but I get to do it while sitting in first class if I want to. Which was wonderful on this train because I found a 4 seat compartment that was as big as the 6 seater but very roomy and when you close the door the air condion kicks in. I shared the compartment with this guy who was heading home to a place about an hour outside of Venice. He confirmed to me that Italy will be very, very hot at this time and thinks it is a good ... read more

Day one Today was day one of busabout. We travelled from Munich to Innsbruck. Absolutley amazing. Either side of the road were these sheer mountains, all snow capped and massive. It was such a beautiful place. We crossed the border into Austria while snaking around these mountains and arrived into Innsbruck. It is such a beatutiful place completley surround by the same sheer mountains seen when we drove there. It has a massive river (the River Inn), which is incredibly fast flowing and cold. We were staying at the Gasthoff Innsbruck, so a 2 minute walk and we were in the old town. Narrow streets, small shops, lots of sidewalk cafes and tourists. We orientated ourselves around Innsbruck for the rest of the afternoon. We saw the old ski jump that was used in the Olympics ... read more

This will probably be the second-to-last entry before I head home. In 25 days I touch down in the O'hare airport. I can't believe it. Before I started this trip eight and a half months seemed like forever. But it hasn't been nearly long enough. But l keep reminding myself that I have plenty of time ahead of me to see all the places I want too. The last few weeks have been relaxed and enjoyable. I visited Rabea in her hometown of Braunsweig and went to another juggling convention. We spent a day in Berlin, which was really cool. It was kind of eerie to think about everything that's happened in that city within the past 100 years. We went to the Holocaust memorial there. It's simple, yet powerful. A grid of square stone columns ... read more

I caught the 10 AM train back to Innsbruck, arriving a little after noon and headed back to my Pension. There I met my nephew and we went out for lunch - as luck would have it my last meal in Innsbruck was where I ate my first meal in Innsbruck, only this time we were joined by post-church lunchers and Valentine Day celebrants. The sun was out in full force so we drove up to the mountain town of Seefeld where we explored and enjoyed coffee and treats. Seefeld is a ski and spa town, very beautiful and picturesque. The spa looks particularly appealing, with the opportunity to lounge outside in a hot pool. Anyway, an early night since I leave Austria tomorrow on a 6AM flight to start the next and final leg of ... read more
