Wow! OK ... time has FLOWN by. It's hard to believe I've already been back in the states for 7 WEEKS! Part of me feels like Honduras was in a completely different life ... but another part feels as if I could wake up tomorrow and be back in the mountains of Copan or La Joya and feel just as at home as ever! The life changes God brings about are really incredible. SO! Here's a bit of a recap and catch-up for my final weeks in Honduras ... During my stay in La Joya we had 2 mission teams from the States come down. One was medical and construction, the other was construction and whatever else needed to be done to keep us all busy. I did a bit of help with the medical team, ... read more

Soft Hot Chewy Sugar coated Steamy fresh and hot to the touch. This is what the average student of El Alba has to look forward to after any given school day. As the bell rings the collection of students squeeze themselves through the doors like panicked cows through cold steel gates. Shoulder to shoulder each one pushing and screaming towards the same ultimate goal: freedom. However, unlike animals, humans often escape TO something rather than FROM something. Although it is true that my students are escaping FROM the grueling 40 minute long torture sessions, in most cases my students are also escaping TO "la reposteria delicia." Or as we would call it in English, "Delight bakery." This is the closest translation I can come up with. The fact of the matter is the name could be ... read more

Ok... so I haven't written a blog entry for more than a week now. For those of you who read them diligently, I am truly sorry. For those of you who find these blog updates to be a just another spam e-mail, your welcome. That being said, lets begin with today's entry. This last weekend I decided to go visit Karina for Dia de La Biblia. It is a day when Christians have church services in the park, carry their Bibles in public and (you guessed it) march like it was going out of style. Seriously, these people really love to march. Every time something is celebrated a marching band walks by complete with color guards and baton twirlers. Its like the ultimate punchline to a joke or the grand solution to the most difficult of ... read more

The past week or so has been so busy with days off that I never had a chance to talk about our Field trip last Friday. We all know that Wednesday was kid's day, but I might have neglected to tell you that the celebration cut off was Seventh grade. Needless to say I had many a classroom full of very distracted children. "Meester, let us play. We have de classes every day. All the other teachers geeve us... ONE day all of de weeks for to play. Meester, you do not give us because you HATE us! Meester lets play, pleeeeease!" Was my greeting to each class. I guess the administration was balancing the playing field by taking the high school students on their Friday field trip. Now, before I continue, I should make this ... read more

So here in Honduras Independence day lasts from September 13th to September 15th. This year it fell on a weekend, so by the time Friday came around everybody started to feel the buzz. I celebrated by going to visit Karina in El Paraiso. No surprise there. On Friday night we all relaxed and talked about the parades and all the different schools in town. Here in Honduras each school marches. They all have big marching bands, accompanied by baton twirlers and children carrying fruit and coffee. People line the streets, everyone holding their umbrellas in one hand and their cameras in the other. Karina's family was interested in how we celebrate Independence day in America. They kept asking about our baton twirlers and marching bands. Sadly I had to tell them that we use firetrucks and ... read more

Honduras beats Jamaica: Honduras 2, Jamaica 0 Tonight the city was electric after the defeat of Jamaica. The win was a triumph over the long time rivals and will provide a huge step up into the World cup qualifications. Although every game here is treated like the Stanley cup finals, THIS game seemed more important than any other. Why that is, I just don't know. The Hondurans just love beating on the Jamaicans. From what I gathered the Jamaicans play football like the Senators play Hockey. Here in Comayagua, the city seemed to hum with excitement as they prepared for the game. Being September 10th we celebrated "Dia de los ninos" or "Kid's day. This means that the candy consumption had reached it's pinnacle well before lunch time. Both adults and children were stuffing their faces ... read more

This last weekend Honduras played Canada. I told all my students that Canada would win and they freaked out. Apparently Canada has never beaten Honduras. Last time the score was 4 to 0. This time Honduras beat Canada 2 to 1, so needless to say my Monday was filled with a lot of, "Meester... Canada? Que paso?" All in all it was a good Monday. I enjoy Mondays because my schedule is very easy. I have first period off and then I have a free period before lunch. I used my free time Yesterday to watch the band practice. This week they are practicing in the street. Every time the bass drums walk by Miss Velesca's Land Rover they set off the alarm. I think the students enjoy it, because Miss Velesca is the disciplinarian. I ... read more

This week I have introduced the double warning policy. When students disrupt class they are given a warning. I write their names on the board and next to the names a write a number. Each student gets two warnings and when they work their number up to three they must leave the classroom. Sometimes the class will cheer for certain students to get a number like its a game. So when Carmen leaves her seat, during reading class, to punch David in the arm she receives one warning. Her name goes on the board with the number one next to it. At this the class will usually make some sort of noise as if it were game seven and Derek Roy was on a breakaway. The offending student will then turn to her classmates with a ... read more

On this third of September in the year of 2008 I present to you an extensive photo album of our school, El Alba. Allow me to provide a brief history... El Alba bilingual school is, as you may have guessed, a bilingual school started by "El Alba bilingual educational services" In 1995. We are located in the the central area of Honduras. One hour from the capital and only three hours from most of the tourist areas like Copan, San Pedro, Tela and a few others I can't pronounce. You can check out the web site here (www.elalba-bilingualschool.com) but its really horrible, so don't bother. El Alba is a very small school. We only have about 250 students and we cater from kindergarten to eleventh grade. Upon completing the elevinth grade a student has fulfilled his ... read more

This last weekend I headed over to El Paraiso for the reggaeton show at Iglesia Amor Viviente. It turned out to be just a concert with a small no name band from Tegus. Karina and I ended up leaving early. On Saturday we planned on going swimming, but the rain wouldn't allow it, so once again we sat around like a couple Hondurans and watched movies. I enjoy spending time with the Reyes family. They are all very easy going and have a great sense of humor. This weekend I found out that even a conservative Honduran family enjoys racial jokes. After Saturday night I am convinced that every race of people enjoys mocking other races. Today (Monday, September 1st) was the first full day of classes. Last week we had half days all week. My ... read more
