If you ever find yourself wandering the countless intersections, laced throughout the streets of Comayagua, and you happen to stumble upon a corner pastry shop simply named "Coffee and Cakes," do yourself a favor and step inside. You will be pleasantly surprised. For just beyond eye shot of the countless cookies, cakes, tarts, parfaits, puddings, souffles, pies, and other pastries you will find yesterdays stale doughnuts. Chances are crusty croissants don't wet your appetite, assuming your ears aren't twice the length of your head, that is. What I mean is, rabbits love donuts. Especially those of the chocolate frosted variety. When you stop to think about it, it makes sense. The Cadbury bunny eats chocolate eggs, right? So why wouldn't these cuddly conies accompany their Caesar salads with a few surgery fried fritters? It is hard ... read more

This morning, on my walk to school, I couldn't help but notice that Barak Obama was voted into office last night. This is because it was on the front page of every Honduran newspaper I could find. It was interesting to see all the different headlines. The really funny thing, for me at least, was to see the news call someone a negro. In Honduras most people refer to African Americans as "negros" or "personas negros." Its not a racist thing, the word "negro" in Spanish means black. So when the newspaper types "los negros" they are literally saying "the blacks." So much for candy coated euphemisms, eh? I find that gringos tend to use the term Afro Americanos. We aren't able use the word negro when describing our new president, I can't quite put my ... read more

"Meester, you vote for Barak Osama or Maaa... uh... Maaa como se dice? Ah jes, McCain." Was my greeting from a few students today. The election buzz didn't quite catch on as much as I had expected. The US government directly effects Honduras almost monthly. You wouldn't know it if you watched CNN, but George Bush meets with Manuel Zelaya quite often. One of my students, Ramon, did ask me about our nation's heroes. I told him that we have quite a few heroes; Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Harriet Tubman, Booker T, Washington, Hulk Hogan, and so on. "Jes, jes I know," He contested, without even flinching at the mention of the Hulkster, "But do joo have like ahh special name for dem?" "Well, we just call them heroes." "Joo don have ... read more

When I moved here to Honduras I made the decision to leave most all my warm clothing at home, in Buffalo. I visited here last December, around Christmas, and the weather was very nice. Usually Honduras is warm during the day and cooler at night time. It is a comfortable cool, sometimes accompanied by a slow breeze. Comayagua tends to be a hotter city than Paraiso, but cooler than Tegus'. However, none of these cities come close to San Pedro Sula. San Pedro can get muggy, being on the coast an all. Here, in Comayagua, the weather has taken a bitter turn into the mid 70's. I never thought I would say this, but it feels cold. A theme I use with my students, "Nothing is good or bad, but by comparison," applies heavily here. I ... read more

This week we are continuing last weeks exams. We spent the majority of last week on RED ALERT so that meant we only had two days of exams. Monday, Tuesday and Friday were spent watching movies and playing video games. The good news is that we all got paid on Wednesday. So I filled my fridge with all sorts of tasty treats. Cranberry juice, club soda, flour tortillas, beans, pepper jack cheese, green peppers, fresh milk, and chocolate. I think I covered all the bases. On Thursday a few of my 10th and 11th graders had a football game. El Alba technically doesn't have a team, however the 11th grade boys do belong to a league and their team name is El Alba... so we almost have a team. The way it was described to me ... read more

Seeing as how the majority of the readers don't understand a lick of Spanish I have translated Karina's blog from yesterday. Keep in mind that this translation is not word for word. In order for Her story to make sense in English I need to change the order of some sentences and the use of certain words. Latinos have a very distinct way of speaking so this might seem a little strange. They are very passionate people and as you will discover they love to talk about love. There are about five different ways to say "I love you." So a few things will sound a little different, but it is the closest translation I could come up with. Hondurans have a lot of phrases and word usage that either doesn't exist in English or just ... read more

Today we have a special entry from Karina. As requested she has composed her version of the "How we met" story. We spent the weekend together formulating some plans for the wedding and I told her that she needed to write down her version. At first she was a bit apprehensive, but then I told her about her widespread fame. "Karina, do you know that your famous in multiple cities? Its true. People in Buffalo know who you are, people in New Orleans and North Carolina know too. Not only that, but people that I haven't even met know about our story and they want to hear your version. Give the people what they want, Karina." After she figured out how to use Microsoft word in English she buzzed right along. Usually our evenings together are ... read more

This morning I woke to the sound of helicopters. It was around 8:30 in the morning, I know that because I glanced back at the clock that sits at the head of my bead. The last few nights I have taken to sleeping in reverse to see what effect it will have on my nocturnal libretto. So far the results have been boldly positive. I have also removed all access hair from my scalp to create a better intake of oxygen. So these results could be caused by either the reverse order in which I sleep or my bald head. I still have a few more nights to go until I can reach a conclusion. After peering back at my clock to inspect the hour I buried my face into the overstuffed pillow and quietly reminisced ... read more

Well it is official. For those who have not heard the news, Karina and I are getting married. Apologies if I haven't been clear with the details, but I've been busy with school lately. We have exams next week so I have been writing tests and reviews in a crazed fury. About a year or so in the past, in a land far far away, I met Karina. I was a leader in our High school youth group from East Aurora, NY. We had made arrangements for a mission trip to Honduras. Our destination was a place called Paraiso. I had absolutely no knowledge of Honduras. All I knew was what I was told. I found out that they spoke Spanish and they lived in the mountains. While the group prepared for the trip I was ... read more

Don't let the title of this blog confuse you. This is not a review of Cormac McCarthy's latest novel, "The Road." A post apocalyptic story about a man and his son, trying to survive in a harsh lifeless earth. But, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It provided a classic example of the descriptively bleak and realistic style of McCarthy. I couldn't put it down and I ended up finishing it, to the amazement of my students, in only a few days. However, this blog is not about a book. In fact the road I am referring to is right outside my Apartment. Its currently being repaved... Honduran style. This is a process to make any civil engineer feel... uhh... well... feel something. I don't know about you (Cooper and Dad) but it ... read more
