Ráno jsme se probudili a posnídali na střeše úzasnou snídani, kterou jsme si poručili večer předtím. Zeptali se nás tehdy, co bychom rádi, tak jsme si navymejšleli ledasco. A všechno tam bylo! Bya to paráda. Omeleta, čokoláda, ovocný poháry a hlavně - ten nejlepší pomerančovej dzus, kterej jsme kdy pili. Tuto událost připomíná ... read more

The alarm went off at 0500 and, as promised, we were collected at 0530 - although not by the car or driver that we were expecting. The driver was a young bloke - about 25 or so - and the car was a Moskovitch 1500, similar to a Lada. It had no seatbelts but the mandatory loud car radio blasting CubaPop. We collected Gino and Isabella and headed for the hills - literally. About 30 minutes in we were stopped at a Police checkpoint. Our driver signalled to us to be quiet, took his license out of the glovebox and stepped out of the car to talk to the cop. Moments later he reappeared, rubbed his rosary beads hanging from the rearview mirror and drive off. Impersonating a taxi driver and chauffeuring tourists is illegal in ... read more

Paco’s dad took us to the station to meet the 0900 Viazul bus to Bayamo. Jo and I managed to pass the two hours thanks to NOFX on the iPod. It seems that the Cuban bus authorities think that their patrons enjoy CubaPop music at extreme volumes for the duration of the trip in addition to sub zero air conditioning. With an earphone each and earplugs in the other ear we got through the trip - just. We met Gino and Isabella - a Belgian couple - as we disembarked and they were in Bayamo for the same reason as us - to visit Commandancia La Plata, Fidel’s jungle hideout in the Sierra Maestra during the revolution. We went our separate ways and agreed to meet in the Plaza de Revolution in Bayamo at 1230. The ... read more

We were up early for a hot shower - a luxury in Cuba - and were on the streets just before 0800 to walk to the Moncada Barracks. Lonely Planet said that the gates opened at 0900 and this was confirmed by the security guards at the gate when we arrived at 0830. We filled in time circulating the barracks and walking through Parque Historico Abel Santamaria featuring a fountain sculpture of Moncada participant Abel Santamaria and Jose Marti. We returned to the entrance just before 0900 to be told that the new opening time was 0930 so we bought a few drinks and waited - you simply can’t rush things in Cuba. Entrance to the Moncada Museum was CUC2 each, CUC1 for the camera and CUC5 for the video camera. We enquired and were provided ... read more

Just as Nicolas had told us, his mate Paco was amongst the mob of touts as our bus rolled in at 0630. His father had a Peugeot waiting for us and we headed off to our casa, located 8 blocks south of Casco Historico - the old town. We signed in and had a couple of hours sleep to recover from the overnighter and had walked up to the focal point of Casco Historico - Parque Cespedes - by 1000. The main square is dominated by Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Asunction almost as much as it is dominated by touts for taxis and cigars. We headed away from the hustle (and hustlers) towards Plaza Dolores - or so we thought - finally finding refuge in a small cafe. As is customary in Cuban restaurants ... read more

"Holguin!" bellowed the bus driver. Off the bus and negotiated the fare to our next casa. Once more a crazy taxi ride, this time one man is teaching another to drive! Part of the lesson includes the skill of turning off the engine when going downhill to save petrol. It's a green car. We pulled up at a group of three storey communist style apartment blocks, square concrete cubes stacked together. The sun was going down, the area looked really dodgy and I thought the next few minutes would be crucial as we waited for our host to arrive on his bicycle. All turned out ok - Holguin was one of the safest cities so far in Cuba and the owner was a gent. Top chef too. Rise and shine Sunday morning to explore the city. ... read more

Baracoa, one of the most heavily hurricane hit places in Cuba. We werent even sure if we would be able to travel here. Not so much if the road would be open, but if there would be services for tourists, would we just be getting in the way, or putting money into a region that needs it? We´d heard varying reports ranging from ¨yeah fine no problems¨ through to ¨its a disaster zone, stay away¨. It turns out that while we werent the first tourists to go back to Baracoa, we werent far off, its still a disaster zone, some places dont have power and water still, but the centre of town is up and running again, and welcoming us with open arms (thinking of those tourist dollars of course!!!) Colin got a ride in another ... read more

Santiago de Cuba...home of the best Cuban music...but could we find any?! We were met off the bus from Trinidad by a hospitality club contact, Lianne, who had found us a lovely casa particular a few minutes walk from the centre of the old historic district of Santiago. We had to clamber up a small spiral staircase, with our packs, to get to our room. Getting up was way easier than when we tried to come back down again a few days later! Our first ride in a classic old car was to the casa in a 1948 Dodge with suicide doors in the rear. As battered as they come, but still working just fine. We met up with Lianne every night that we were there. We didnt hit the clubs or anything - those who ... read more

So I just spent 2 days in Santiago de Cuba...didn't like it from the moment I arrived at 6:30 in the morning after a freezing 15 hour bus ride with the craziest soundtrack ever (courtesy of the very flirtacious bus driver). At least the music he played provided some comic relief...think BeeGees, Michael Jackson, weird electronic reggae, very sad boleros, and of course plenty of salsa. The upside of Santiago was the family i stayed with. They were wonderful and their casa was just beautiful. I ended up spending most of my time with them in their home...practicing my spanish and taking turns informally interviewing each other about our respective countries/cultures. I was sick (sore throat and cough) and just didn't feel like dealing with the very aggressive jineteros (gigilos and prostitutes) who were everywhere throughout ... read more
