Cuba - getting there from Cancun Mexico and Visas
14 years ago, May 20th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #73324
Hello -

Im just looking at the best way to get to Cuba from Mexico sometime in September. We are essentially backpacking so we want to avoid having a set itinerary unless it is going to cause problems.

I have read in the lonely planet that you can organise flights as well as visas in Cancun for approx. $300USD. Has anyone ever done this before and if so can you recommend a local agency that may be able to help us out?

At the moment here in Australia to prebooking flights and visas is going to be well above that amount!

Your thoughts would be appreciated Reply to this

x2 what chanel said lol

plus another question, is it possible to get to cuba from miami? would be alot easier for us to go miami->cuba->mexico then through central america, rather then miami-fly over to mexico city then across to cancun then in to cuba and back in to belize from there

The thing is no flights will depart the USA direct to cuba if your after a direct option becuase of all the trouble the USA has with Cuba. It is possible it just means you will go via the Bahamas or via somewhere in central america.

You can get the visas for Cuba in the airport apparently in Cancun its about $15USD and Mexicana and i think is Cubana air or something do the flights over.

I was hoping to find a flight that went from cuba to Belieze but they seem to go via Mexico city so we are just going to head back to Cancun and backpack down through tallum, Playa del carmen into belieze... seems to be short bus rides so hopefully it shouldnt be too much of an issue! when i was writing that i thought to myself, hey why not go via the bahamas!!! Lifes tough isnt it!

Well im just sitting here on a global reservations system so it tells me pretty quickly whose flying where etc... but its bahamas air that sells the tickets otherwise you may have to buy "point to point" tickets like miami to mexico city and then mexico city to cuba or something like that....

In the lonely planet guidebook it tells you which airlines fly where etc ... you may be able to get a few details on the lonely planet site online. 😊 Reply to this

Yes you will not find any flights originating from the USA to cuba.

You will have to find flights from the USA to Cancun and then flind a flight from Cancun over to Cuba.

Mexicana and Cubana will get you from Cancun to cuba direct but you will just need to get yourself from the USA to Cancun. And just make sure you allow yourself enought time to check in for your next flight keeping in mind the Mexicana and Air Cubana flights are generally non refundable which means if you miss your flight you will have to purchase a whole new ticket.

On what date are you wanting to go to Cuba and from where in the states and ill look at it. Reply to this

oh cheers, looks like we will be heading that way departing out of toronto now (although if its alot cheaper we can just bus it down to new york and depart from there) we have seen flights from toronto to Jamaica for $300 and to cancun from toronto for $260/new york to jamaica for $200 and new york to cancun for $160 its just the next flight from either jamaica to cuba or cancun to cuba that we are finding it hard lol

unsure if any of that made sence lol

If you were looking at spending a few days in Cancun you can easily organise your visas and flights etc in Cancun for around $300 USD per person. (includes return flights to Cuba and the Cuban Visa).

However there seems to be issues with purchasing flights with mexicana airlines to Cuba. The website states that "All reservations or purchase of tickets for flights with a destination to or departure from Havana, must be made with a credit card issued in Mexico by a Mexican company. You must contact a Mexicana phone representative to reserve or purchase such tickets with a credit card issued by a non-Mexican company"

I would contact mexicana and see if you can buy those flights with them using an aussie Credit card. They have flights as below and you should be able to book them before you go, its just that my system wont allow me to do it. You need to try direct with the airline.

MX 3025 Y 01OCT JFKCUN HS1 1145 1500
OPERATED BY AMERICAN AIRLINES
MX 7322 Y 01OCT CUNHAV HS1 2040 2250
OPERATED BY MEXICANA CLICK

Yeah, we are having that problem as well. We are currently in El Salvador and wanted to book flights Cancun to Cuba but the Cubana website is currently down, and the Mexicana one won't let us use anything other than a mexican credit card! Not easy! Lynn Reply to this

On the Mexicana website, if you click on Multi-city and then enter your flight details you can get around that problem. We have booked flights to Cuba from Cancun using a credit card under the category of 'Rest of World'
Hope that helps Reply to this

Hola. I went from Cuba to Cabo by Mexicana. It was easy to book online..but I have an mexican credit card, so that is why. If you don't, use 'rest of the world' option or you can always phone a travel agent and have them book for you. Reply to this

I'm on my way to Cuba Havana from Mexico city on the 9th Sept and will be staying for 2 weeks. I have no plans other then that... I haven't even booked a place to stay. I'm checking out tripadvisor but it's tricky. I'm from Australia, I'm 34 and I'm looking for a place near the beach and where there are a lot of people 😊 Hopefully lots of drinking and going out. Anyone have any suggestions of where the best parts or are around Havana. I also love doing activities like diving etc...

Btw I got a friend to book my flight, she's in Mexico and she's booked directly with Mexicana. There were no problems. I couldn't book with my credit card and I don't know why. Reply to this
