We have been in Costa Rica for 7 days, the first one doesn't really count cause we were trapped in the rain and fog on the mountain in a broken down van (see earlier blog). In that time, we have seen no TV, no CNN, we have met only five people that speak any kind of english at all and we have survived. We have also managed multiple trips up the mountain to the Vulcan Poas driving a five speed stick shift ( I say we, but its really Brian and Bruce driving) Anyway, the point is, this is really an experience. Most people here live in very simple, rustic houses that are always surrounded by locked gates and bars. Even their cars are locked up behind bars. In the city of Alujara at the end ... read more

Spent the day orienting ourselves to the city and making our way to the zooological aviaries on Zoo Ave. It should have taken us 20 minutes but nothing, especially navigating, is easy here. The zoo and aviary is known for rescuing all types of animals and birds but most live there uncaged and free. Amazing menagerie of wild life, most I've never seen before outside of a zoo. Settled in the midst of the zoo, surrounded by lush trees and plants sits an fancy restaurant with colorful peacocks wandering around through the tables freely and friendly waiters fluent in English. So helpful. It's amazing how you miss communicating in your own language And it's only been four days. Interesting facts about Costa Rica...gas is above $4.00 a gallon and you don't pump your own gas, by ... read more

Woke up very early to an already bustling city. It's six in the morning here and the noises are a new reality since I'm a country girl at heart. Always more comfortable with the soft sounds of the country. But there is something about the cacophony of noises that is also life challenging. Come on, get up, times a wasting. I remember the first time I went to Europe as a young, very naive college student. It was so life altering at the time, the foreign and formidable archetecture, the language barriers, the places I had only read about in history books. I hiked around Ireland seeing places I had only heard about through stories and songs my whole life. Galway Bay, Dublin, Tipperary, It's a Long Way to Tipperary, we use to sing in the ... read more

We arrived in Costa Rica on Wednesday and meet up with Bruce and Sue. Not a large airport and going through customs was a snap. Bombarded by cab drivers and guides just outside of the airport we followed directions from our host Tomas and went a short distance to an outside restaurant for a bite to eat while we wait for Tomas to pick us up. Tomas is a teacher and teaches until 3:00 so we settle in to wait. First impressions - bustling city surrounded by massive mountains, we are in a sort of bowl. The mountains stretch up into the clouds. Later I learn these are all active volcanos and some have erupted as recently as 2009. When Tomas arrives to pick us up it is almost 4:30 and traffic is beyond anything any ... read more

We have arrived at our lodge, a large five bedroom log cabin. It is beyond rustic. We share a small meal oF chicken and look over the place. Not exactly what we expected. The wind and torrential rains are a bit scary and it is freezing. No heat. No hot water. We find as many blankets as possible and settle in for the very cold night. The wind howls all night and there is so much rain it is pouring down the walls of the living room. I text Tomas before we go to bed and explain what has happened . Next morning, very wet. Haven't heard from Tomas. Breakfast pastry from across the streets bakery. Van is still dead. No hot water, no shower. Not what we were planning. An inauspicious beginning to a month ... read more

After waking up we are delighted to find that our stay here includes breakfast. Breakfast is served in an outside atrium filled with beautiful plants and singing birds of all kinds. We start with fresh fruit, pinapple, cantalope, watermelon and bananas. Also fresh squeezed juice. We have a choice of an American meal or a Tica (Costa Rica). American choices include omelet, eggs, bacon, ham, pancakes, waffles and toast. The Tica breakfast includes bLack beans and rice, plantanga, toast, and scrambled eggs. Delicious. We left the hotel to explore the city of Alajuala. Alajuala is in the shadow of the Volcon Poas, an active volcano. You can't see the top because it is in the clouds as it stands over 10000 feet high. Alajuala is a bustling city with many vehicles of all sizes. Mostly Toyotas ... read more

.....And then some! The Costa Rica capital city was the first and last port of call on the entire trip, and to prove that urban areas can appeal in varying sizes and lengths of stay, the cities of both San Jose and neighbouring Alajuela were sampled as an integral part of the stay in Costa Rica. First up was Alajuela, and a short hop from the country's main international airport. An overnight stay at a local hotel led into a short walk into town, and upon arrival in central Alajuela, the usual trappings you would associate with Costa Rican culture are all there in evidence. The city's main square is easily likely to be the most happening area, at least if this short visit was anything to go by, and the main cathedral is, in turn, ... read more
