Because of the very early flight tomorrow I stayed in the recently opened url=https://www.yyc.com/en-us/calgaryairportauthority/newinternationalterminal/about/internationalterminal.aspxCalgary International Terminal. Its vast expanse of gleaming glass, polished marble and flooding light was disorienting. I requested directions to the Marriott Hotel from the information desk, and then had to asked a passing maintenance man. The hotel's decor was a continuation of gleaming white and aluminum, even up into the room. Almost immediately I left to explore the new terminal to make things easier in the morning. I learned from the United agents that I would have to check-in at 4:15 a.m. Yeesh! 3:30 wake-up call. I went down early for dinner, pretending to still be on daylight-savings-time... read more

Geo: 9.93333, -84.0833Today we are off to Chicago to another home exchange. This will be our fifth home exchange this year! We have always wanted to see Chicago, so now is our chance. We were up at 3:30 am, as we had a taxi coming at 4:30 am. The taxi arrived 45 minutes early, but we were organized and ready to go by 4:00 am. This trip we are flying with Delta. Once checked in we used our Black MasterCard and visited the airport lounge. The plane boarded on time, but once we were all buckled in they announced they could not leave due to volcanic ash on the runway. Turrialba Volcano has been spewing out ash off and on for the past week, and this morning it happened again! We waited 1 1/2 hours before ... read more

Things can only get better? I'm starting this trip in a rather bad mood, having come down with a horrible cold (or flu?) with fever and cough for about three days and now a socked-in head. Time for the tropics! A 3-hour flight to Miami, then a 3-hour layover to stretch our legs before going on to Costa Rica via American Airlines. We met our Overseas Adventure Travel guide, Esteban, at the Studio Hotel, Santa Ana, San Jose, a very first-rate hotel. Esteban is 27, very well organized, with prefect English, and, it would turn out later, he's an excellent birder. In the morning we met the rest of our group (15 total), mostly retired and all from the States. Breakfast fruit was especially excellent: papaya, pineapple, melons. Soon we were off to our first stop, ... read more

When I arrived in San José at 6am it was nice and warm, I took the bus to the center, the taxi to the hostel and went straight to the university because I missed friday, when they organised everything. So I got there, got lots of papers for the visa and for the immatriculation. Back at the hostel I fall asleep. Somewhere inbetween home and San José I ate something wrong.. San Pedro, the part where the "U" University is located, is not very nice. Many american shops, malls and restaurants - nothing green. However, the campus inbetween is beautyful. Lots of palmtrees, bambus and nice places to sit. Tuesday night I got invited to a birthday of one of the exchange students, so I first met all the other students from all over the world. ... read more

We got to sleep an hour later due to our later than planned departure from Colon, Panama. We’ve been experiencing extremely poor to horrid internet service for the past couple of days and our ability to do anything online has been almost completely stymied, especially posting the blog or uploading images. We went to the Lido for breakfast and my mother asked Sharon to get her some waffles. My mother added, “Waffles with syrup, and apples on the side with no syrup.” I got her oatmeal and banana, and sometimes wonder at the quantity of food my mother packs away in her petite frame. I got an omelette with jalapeños, onions, ham, bacon, cream and cheddar cheeses and added salsa to it. It was quite good with some white toast. Sharon also had a waffle. Due ... read more

San Jose, a 1.6 million metropolis, has grown rapidly over the last 1/2 century, with regular waves of refugees from adjoining states like San Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and even Mexico. A modern doughnut of city and industrialization surrounds the old city core which houses the Opera House, Museums, Art Galleries, Cathedrals, ..The highlight was my one day in San Jose was a visit to the modern Pre-Columbian Gold and Numismatic Museum. You enter through underground vault doors to become entranced with vast collections of Pre-Columbiam gold artifacts and jewelery. When you re-emerge, unfortunately you re-enter the faded, neglected down town world. Interesting, but not really stimulating. Heading for the bottom of the Nicoya peninsula -- should be more stimulating.... read more

R: After Dominical, we took a bus to San Isidro de General, apparently the new upcoming city of Costa Rica. There isn't much to see here, so we ran from bus station to bus station, in hope of making our 20 minute connection to a bus to San Jose. Success! Our next bus was a bit more complicated as we were to get off in the middle of nowhere to visit an Eco lodge. Thankfully it was well signed and there were no dramas. After an 800m walk down a muddy track, we found the place, and it is stunning. C: The lodge is built on the edge of the mountain and is made up of lots of individual wooden cabins. Ours had a great view down the mountain and was surrounded by bird-filled trees. It ... read more
