Today is another fun filled day of isolation. I insisted on a room with a private balcony and ended up with a room with a dirty window overlooking the car park and a wall covered with 45 km of barbed wire. On the plus side, after 3 days of feeling absolutely terrible, I have woken up feeling heaps better. As outside appears to be deserted, and it has been a full 5 days since my first symptoms, I decide to don a mask a take a walk round the hotel grounds. It’s my first time outdoors (unless you count getting in and out of the car) since I tested positive 3 days ago. It turns out we’re staying in a quirky hotel with courtyards and fountains and stained glass windows. The best news is the pool, ... read more

We decide to stick with our original plan to drive to San José this morning. There are several reasons for this 1) the hire car is due back; 2) we are 60 miles from the nearest hospital if either of gets ill and 3) it gives us the opportunity to book a hotel more conducive to self isolating. I’ve only been stuck in this room one day and I’m already going stir crazy! First, it’s time for breakfast – a bit of a mission when every time I swallow is excruciating. I manage a couple of fork fulls of scrambled egg and a few chunks of pineapple whilst the old man hovers, waiting for any scraps. Then it’s time for the 4 hour drive north to the capital. Instead of our original plan to spend a ... read more

Our final day in Costa Rica found us once again on the bus traveling to San Jose. We returned to the same hotel we have been to twice before, the Studio Hotel. After getting to our room and freshening up we walked to the nearby Italian restaurant for lunch. After lunch we returned to the hotel to join the City Tour. After being dropped off by the National Theater we had a look inside the theater and walked some nearby streets. We spent some time in the Gold Museum which contains artifacts from the indigenous peoples of Costa Rica. It included pottery and clay artifacts as well as many of the items made from gold. The gold items range from very small gold pieces to larger plate sized pieces. From the museum we walked past older ... read more

As I mentioned earlier there was no glass in the windows of our room only screen, so when the Howler Monkeys became vocal in the morning, the noise was not muffled. They started in at 5 am which ended my sleep for the night. As it got lighter outside, I got dressed and decided to look for the monkeys. At the next building there were several people with cameras pointed to the trees. In the trees were monkeys, but they were Spider Monkeys not Howlers. I have no idea where the noisy ones went, but the Spider Monkeys were putting on a show as they ate on the fruit of the tree. In addition to the monkeys, birds were flying into the trees to eat as well. I was pleased to see Montezuma Oropendulas and Collared ... read more

We left this morning from Orange City, Florida to drive to Miami to catch our flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. The drive was uneventful and we arrived in time to pass through security with plenty of time before the first leg of the trip. We had a little over three hour flight to Panama City, Panama where we changed planes for an hour or so flight to San Jose. We were joining a tour with Gate 1 tour company and our ride to the hotel was waiting when we landed at 10 pm. After arriving at the hotel we organized our belongings as we were heading to Tortuguero in the morning and could only take a limited amount of luggage. Then it was off to bed for a little sleep before leaving at 6 am ... read more

This would be our second day at altitude (about 3000m) and slightly cooler temperatures. Such a relief! We enjoyed the lovely breakfast buffet orchestrated by a very French head chef. He pleased the crowd of mostly seniors and very serious bird watchers. We had come to the right place?! With our tiny bit of advice we started onto the trails in search of a brightly coloured Quetzal, the star of the area. Sadly we never did spot one but Scott and Alexa managed a pretty long hike in the forest. Aside from arguing over the best sticks and who had the next turn to hold them, the hike was great! Many things were spotted like yellow birds and blue birds and black birds with orange beaks. There were lots of fruit trees, clouds and views from ... read more

We were sad but ready to leave Charlie’s - I mean sure we were all burnt and covered in bumps but we were becoming pretty attached to that pool. The kids’ swimming really making progress and a lot of delight when the cows would arrive in the next door pasture. So we all piled into “Sammy the carolla” and we started off for the mountains. The first part of the drive was pretty straightforward windy, twisty roads full of aggressive passers. But then we turned off on our road to Sagevre River and things started to feel a little hairy. Steep inclines. Uneven roads and nary a few inches of passing room. But beautiful country, too. After about an eternity and 8 kilometres we arrived! Our Airbnb was part of a larger hotel / spa. They ... read more

Dear friends, we’re back! Our first night in Costa Rica is in San Jose where we’re waiting at a very nice hotel for Tiffany and Alexa to arrive. It’s a long time to get down here ( thanks Boeing), but we’re finally feeling the tropical heat. We spend the day doing some local eating, local driving, and relaxing in the pool. The traffic is a little bit crazy (I wonder why there’s so many accidents) But we managed to make it to the mall to pick up a Sim card, greet Tiffany and Alexa at the hotel, and have a nice dinner. Tomorrow is an early morning to start a long drive to our destination on the beach for a week.... read more

Well... our adventure started off... not quite like the adventure we had planned. When you live in Canada, travelling in February is a great idea - you want to get away from the cold and the snow, get a little vitamin D and come back with a nice glow that will make everyone jealous. That was our plan at least. Unfortunately, the Canadian winter (which was really non existent in Penticton until recently) decided to show its ugly face as we were literally departing on our trip. After one slight delay, we were in the car driving to the airport to get the notice our flight had been cancelled. Not because of snow in Penctiton but because of snow in Vancouver that’s the downside of flying out of a small airport! With highway 97 closed due ... read more
