Day 8. High humidity. Bottled water and sun block in hand, we load up the bus and head south to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica’s better known beaches. The drive over is an adventure in itself. Roads are narrow and pockmarked. As we drive over one-lane bridges, the wooden beds bounce and shudder. As some tour members settle on the beach, a few of us take off for a hike thru the forest. It’s a beautiful, sunny day. Not a whisper of rain. Instead, within a few feet of beginning the hike, we are soaked. Drenched in sweat. And it just gets worse. By the time we get to the top, sweat pools on my arms. We are wetter than if it had been raining. Still we trudge on through fabulous scenery. At ... read more

En lille japansk ... read more

So much for a romantic getaway where you forget all your problems and just relax. Yesterday was one of the most harrowing days of both our lives. After having to kill three hours in an LAX terminal that had all services closed, a very long 5 hour red-eye, a completely and unnecessary cab ride and another three hour wait in the Coca Cola bus station, which looks like parts of LA (if LA was in hell), we finally boarded our bus for Manuel Antonio thinking all of our tribulations were behind us. However, Costa Rica's highway 1 had other ideas. Our supposed three-hour bus ride stretched out to nearly five because of rain swept road and cars in front of us breaking down multiple times. When we got to the town of Quepos, just a few ... read more

We woke up fairly early today so that we could spend a little more time in Manuel Antonio before we had to leave to Alajuela. As we were getting ready to go upstairs to have another wonderful breakfast, the obnoxious girl next door comes back and is screaming “Buenos Dias!!!” into our room with probably the worst accent I have ever heard. You can imagine we got out of there really quickly. We enjoyed another breakfast with Elena and then she snuck us upstairs to the see the view of the entire place from Anita’s balcony. It was so gorgeous. The rainforest is so lush, the beaches so clean, the water so blue, and the islands so mysterious. After a few pictures, we headed down to the park once again, so that we could lay out ... read more

We woke up a couple times during the night because there was an insane rainforest thunder storm beating down on us. Extremely loud thunder, pouring rain, really close lightening, and all that jazz. It continued on trough the early morning, so we decided to sleep in a bit more because the park would have been muddy and difficult to trek through if we had arrived there at the initial time we were going to. Once we finally got up, we went to Anita’s house just a few steps away to have breakfast. It was honestly the best breakfast we’ve had in a good while. Toast with guava marmalade, a beautifully arranged tropical fruit bowl, coffee, eggs any way we wanted them, fresh squeezed oj, and fresh baked muffins to top it all off. Karin was complaining ... read more

After a “crazy” night on the town, we woke up to the beating rain of an insane thunder storm, so much for our hike. We decided to sleep in instead of trekking through the rain to see crocodiles and turtles. I was pretty sad about the turtles because we haven’t seen one yet. We finally got a full nights rest thanks to that lovely storm. When we eventually got out of bed, it was sunny and absolutely beautiful. We put our suits on and sat out for the last time on the black sand beach. A bunch of surfers were out and there are so crazy. The waves are HUGE! We sat ou for about 20 minutes and it just got too hot and we were too hungry. We then walked over to a restaurant on ... read more

Thanks for your patience with our previous Spanish message .... now the English version! After our long 4 day week of classes, we headed to the coast! We left Friday morning, bright and early at 6am with Val and Eric. It really wasn´t a problem getting up since the rooster is helping us with that! We took a public bus leaving from San Jose and it took about 3.5 hours to get there. Again, glad we took dramamine, the route was incredibly curvy and bumpy, but pretty - the vistas are so amazing!!! Vale la pena! Once we got there, we checked in to our hotel and headed right to the beach. It was super hot and sunny, which we were so happy about because last week was quite rainy here in San Jose. It ... read more

we made it down the mountains, back to the sun and beach where we belong. we´re staying in quepos...dirty little town...we got eaten by ants in our bed last night!! not to worry though, we switched hotels this morning and tonight should be much better. we went to manuel antonio national park today and did lots of hiking. we saw lots of monkeys, huge lizards, and bright orange crabs living in the middle of the rain forest! we also roasted on the beach for a while...so nice. chad lost his sunglasses...again...and found them...again. lucky man. we´re going to stay here for another day, and then head to san jose on saturday. from there we´ll head toward the carribbean coast for some more beach time. in san jose we´ll have free internet though, so we´ll try to ... read more

Manuel Antonio is a perfect place to get your fill of both beach and rain forest. It's definitely touristy, but it also maintains that small beach town feel. A little bit of everything...I loved it! We went 3 weekends ago so this entry is coming rather late, but I'll see what I can muster up from my memory. The bridge over a river leading into Quepos, the town next to Manuel Antonio, was damaged so we were delayed for a few hours while cars went across 1 by 1. We couldn't even walk across the mere 40-foot wide river because the pedestrian bridge was washed away. But we finally got to our hotel, Hotel Verde Mar, and were greeted by crabs in our kitchen sink and shower, and the biggest, brightest green grasshopper I've ever ... read more
