Trish had been pining for some surfing action so we rented a surf board (for Trish) and a boogie board (for me). We spent the entire day on the beach, and stuck around long after everyone ran to hide from the thunderstorm - the waves are a great place to watch the lightning. Despite layering on litres of sunscreen, I still ended up being a bright pink colour at the end of the day - doh!... read more

We dragged ourselves out of bed to catch the 7am bus to Quepos... we weren't the only ones with the same idea and so all of the seats were full and we ended up standing up for the first two hours while the bus crawled through the narrow twisting roads out to the pacific side of Costa Rica. Once we reached Dominical, a few people unloaded and we scored some seats. Which was a good thing, since next three hours were not the most pleasant - the bus was absolutely cooking as it crawled along the dirt road, dodging pot-holes and halting to pick people up every 100 metres or so. At one point it drove through a river where the bridge was being repaired. Finally we reached Quepos and Trish was not feeling too good. ... read more

This must-visit park is impressive - so many species easy to spot, including sloths, crocs, and maybe squirrel monkeys, if the American lady and her daughter didn't kill them all, though they were just feeding them bananas, and I idiotically took a half of one that they offered because the monkeys were so cute when they came and took it our of our hands, scampering a few branches away to eat in peace, when a man from the town humbly approached and asked us not to feed them anymore because bananas aren't indigenous to the area and the monkeys don't know to stop eating, so the villagers sometimes find them in the jungle, dead from diarrhea, and I nodded and felt a guilty ignorance, but after he left the lady said, "Hunh, he's just jealous," and ... read more

Things have been AMAZING here in Costa Rica. The week in San Jose went well. Me, Tamara, Cathy, Pablo, his brother and girlfriend are going to Daddy Yankee on June 8th! We got VIP tickets and I´m so excited! This past weekend we went to Manuel Antonio and it was so much fun. We arrived Friday around noon and swam at the beach and pool all day. One of the coolest things happened, when we were sitting at the pool drinking, a monkey was jumping around the trees right next to the tree. It was the first time I had seen a monkey in its own habitat and not in a zoo or park. That night we went to eat at El Avion and everyone left but me, Katie, Christie and Bob. We stayed behind and ... read more

ciao tutti! I'm hoping my exhaustion that has been building for weeks won´t make this dull and confusing. Forgive me if it does. At the moment I´m in a town called San Isidro, at the base of a mountain range called chirripo, the second tallest in central america. Tomorrow I climb for 10 hours or so, with my big bag (minus the things I left in SJ) but made up for in food supplies. Despite the long hike, at nightfall tomorrow I still won't be at the top. I´ll stay at the lodge up there, and will finish the climb the next morning at 3 or so to reach the top by sunrise. I´ll stay another night at the lodge, and will come down the next day and plan to finish the trip with a dip ... read more

Saturday 15th - Wednesday 19th Just a brief run down as i'm on the clock! Will fill in more details soon! Saturday - long day of travelling to San Jose, Costa Rica. Just chilled at a hostel. Sunday - Met up with my cousin Jon and we got a tiny but colourful plane to Manuel Antonio near Quepos on the south west coast of Costa Rica. Afternoon was spent in the sea and watching the sun set followed by a great meal of Wasabi and Mahi Mahi (fish! i usually hate it!) and drinks at a local bar listening to some very cheesy classic rock! Monday - Got the bus down the road and then walked to a very secluded beach area where I did some fantastic snorkling. I was hovering round the coast area but ... read more

I am now home and sitting at my desk in fact. If it was not for the great memories and overall experience it would feel like I never even left. It is funny to come home and realize how easy it is to fall right back into the routine I had left. Not saying the routine is bad, I always enjoy hanging out with my roommates and other friends. Plus, living in Newport Beach is awesome. When you look for it, one can easily find the sense of community that exists on the penisula; additionally, we have the ocean as our backyard. Life is good here. As for the recap for the last couple days we were in Costa Rica. Everything ended on a good note more or less. Thursday we hopped on a bus from ... read more

Once more, conveniece trumped economy. The trip from La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio would take a long day on the public buses, with the added disadvantage of getting connected in San Jose itself. The alternative - a prearranged shuttle. For $21 each we were picked up at Arenal Lodge (saving lots of time and several bucks in taxi getting from there to the bus stop at La Fortuna) and driven door-to-door in air-conditioned comfort to our hotel in Manuel Antonio. With the extra time at the beach and the prevented wear-and-tear on old joints, it would have been worth twice the price. Reserva Manuel Antonio is a fairly small park, but with its amazing beaches and rainforest, with its familiar Cappuchin monkeys and ubiquitous iguanas... it is one of the most visited places in Costa Rica. ... read more

The past week has been quite a wild time. So much has happened, it is hard to really sum it all up. I came up to San Jose last Monday, and chilled at my friend Derek´s house for the next three days waiting around. Megan flew in on Wednesday morning, and Derek had to leave for Nicaragua, so we crashed at his place that night and left our big stuff there while we travelled. The next morning, we woke up and took a bus down to the caribean side, to my favorite town, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. We stayed at a cool place called hotel puerto viejo, which was cheap but sufficient, about 100 meters back from the water. We chilled around town and went to all of the reggae bars at night, while combing the ... read more

To our blog faithful (Especially Faith), I must apologize for letting Elise get hold of the keyboard for the previous post. Know that she means well, and when it comes to organizing a trip and keeping us within budget she's the "Go To Teeth," but when it's time to keep our friends and fam in the loop, I'll handle those duties. Manuel Antonio We spent a week just outside the beautiful environs of Manuel Antonio National Park and the small town of Quepos. Our days were spent alternately at the national park which has rain forest and beaches all wrapped up into one neat little monkey-filled package, and at our hotel's pool which was very nice and virtually deserted... Many Costa Ricans that we spoke with lamented over the lack of tourism this year versus years ... read more
