Lekker vrolijk !... read more

Hey Guys Finally have access to high speed internet and so can put some quick photos up and will try and put some video on as well if it will work. Im fine, Been at Las Pumas for the last 2 weeks, and unfortunately that didn´t turn out quite the way we had anticipated, the work was very boring and much less involved than we had thought....met some fantastic animals though, my first time around Jaguars and Puma so that was very cool, and we picked up Jo, our third friend who is travelling with us...shes been there since we arrived in Costa Rica, so she was well stoked to get out! It is her birthday today, Happy Birthday Jo!!, and we are at La Fortuna, which is a town beside a volcano basically, but we ... read more

'You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy!' Time to change that. The vacation is over. Fun times now yield to longterm consideration. The blog is wide open to readers that may, or may not, appreciate my humor. Yes humor. Opinions and comments expressed do NOT nescessarily reflect those of management! In other words, I, Jake Snow, realize, that people will form an opinion of ME, by what I write. So, I have 'retracted' previous entries, and APOLOGIZE for ANY negative conotations implied. This may be too little, too late. Damage (opinions formed), already done? Cannot change that. Life goes on. Update in the blog will change. I am getting 'back into' my photography... even if it is with a small digital camera. As ... read more

Short on Arenal and Tabacon: the pics say it all! I am getting my 'hot water massage therapy' 2 time a day for 2 days. Korina, I have met your match! They still offer full spa treatments here, for $$$$$...too much! Go to this URL for more on the hotel I stayed at: www.tabacon.com/ see all the pics.....I couldn't get me in the water...Da... WiFi in reception here, costs $15 for 24 hour access to net.. This is a 5 star hotel, and they know it! Gully washers off and on both days! Still nice and cool. Hotel is at 2000 ft above sea level. The volcano is @11,000. ... read more

Intro to La Fortuna La Fortuna is the nearest village to the spectacular Volcan Arenal, which looms 6 kilometers to the west. The volcano was dormant until 1968 when huge explosions triggered lava flows that killed nearly 80 people. It retains its almost perfect conical shape and the degree of activity varies from week to week, but nightfall can often offer an opportunity to watch red-hot lava flowing and incandescent rocks flying through the air. The town has also become a popular base for day trips to Refugio Nacional Cano Negro near the Nicaraguan border. Our Experience We weren't sure we were going to be able to make it to La Fortuna in one day because we'd have to catch three seperate buses (and the last bus we needed left at 12:30pm). If we missed our ... read more

In the morning we swapped rooms from our dungeon on the botton floor with one window, up to another room upstairs - this one was a lot brighter with several windows and a balcony with a view of the volcano. After breakfast we headed out to Vedano caves, where we were given rubber boots, helmets and flashlights. We hiked down a path and explored the cave system there for a couple of hours. It was pretty cool and there were a lot of little gaps that we had to squeeze through. At one point I got to lead a group through a little tunnel with about 30cm of headroom above the water. There were bats, some pretty big tarantulas and other spiders. The guide also pointed out a fish that was supposedly living in the stream ... read more

Hi all Its been another furious two weeks since the last blog. We basically changed groups for the second part of the tour in Antigua, where amazingly, there was more welsh on the tour than any other nationality! Now people say its a small world, and its always pretty weird when you meet somebody abroad who knows the same people as you. But I´d say its very bloody weird when you meet somebody in Guatemala who says they have a photo of your dad on their mantlepiece!!!! So it seems that Kate from Crickhowell´s Dad (Morning Uncle Ken!), works with my Dad up in Brecon. Small bloody world!!! So Major Jackson, I´m afraid that as my budget dwindles, I may be forced to post some questionable photos online of your daughter unless we can reach some ... read more

After arriving at our hostel in San Jose, we ate lunch then slept for 14 hours. So much for day one. We spent our second day in San Jose wandering the city, viewing weird art installations at the museum of contemporary art and geting rained on. Martina also cut her hair. On June 7th, we decided to take the bus to La Fortuna, figuring we´d save ourselves $40 instead of taking a van. Oops. At one stop along the way, a woman ¨dropped¨her glasses at me feet and as I guarded my backpack then stood up, I failed to notice the guy picking my pocket. It took all of 30 seconds before I realized my money clip was missing and even though we knew who took it there was nothing we could do. The culprits were ... read more

We arrived in Costa Rica a few days ago and are beginning to get accustomed to seeing stuff everywhere again... It was strange to see stores stocked with lots of familiar items and small towns with houses that were modern and so many cars..... For example, when we were leaving San Carlos, Nicaragua, I wanted to buy a snack for the trip since we wouldn't arrive until 8:30pm or so....I couldn't find anything but little chip packages, really good homemade bread, and some pear juice. Every store in Costa Rica has hundreds of snack items to choose from...The years of stability here and a long time democratic govenment have given this country so much more prosperity... I've been thinking how much more interesting it is for me, as a tourist, to see more "primitive" villages with ... read more

What a great part of Costa Rica. Even the 6 hour bus trip was beautiful. Lush green cattle farms and rolling hills alternating with forested mountains, the roads lined with bizzy lizzies and tree ferns. Unfortunately the 'direct' bus from San Jose, stopped for anyone and everyone, including the schoolkids on their way home later in the afternoon. Once again on arriving, we were met by loads of touts and 'tourist guides' all promoting their favourite hostel (of course all offering them a kick back). It is my worst part of travelling. Normally by the time we get to our destination we are hot, dusty, normally hungry and all in all pretty darn miserable. Having the task of then trying to lug our bags around just gets us grumpier! It was so muggy when we arrived, ... read more
