San Martin (Pisco), Peru is a short distance south of Lima and an overnight at sea found us arriving at the port in early morning. On Friday, January 13, 2023, on the way to Callao (Lima), Peru, the cruise director had offered Port Talk: General San Martin (Pisco), Peru – our port of call on Monday, January 16, 2023. We were told that the only points of interest in the area are the Paracas National Reserve and the seaside village of Paracas. From the optional tour description for Paracas National Reserve: “Paracas National Reserve is a stunning ecological reserve located in the coastal desert. Begin your day with a visit to the interpretive site to learn about all the different species that are protected in this area, and also the evolution of this part of the ... read more

I had signed up for the U.S. State Department Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in 2019 in preparation for the aborted 2020 European holiday. It’s a worthwhile program that provides information on current topics and alerts regarding safety and security concerns for U.S. citizens traveling abroad, including relevant non-security issues like road closures. I updated my profile after I returned from Europe, and almost immediately was emailed information about political unrest in Peru. I haven’t explored any of the emails in depth as I decided that if the situation was treacherous, the ship’s captain would bypass Lima altogether or I would just remain on the ship. I had learned that the President of Peru was impeached and that strikes have shut down inland railroads, amongst other morsels, but I adopted a wait-and-see posture. Well, the wait ... read more

When I was awakened by my reliable alarmophone at 0645 (so I could don my bathrobe before my juice and coffee arrived at +/- 15 minutes of 0700), I again felt the resurgence of enthusiasm about the cruise that had began the previous evening. Cruise Day 8, Tuesday, January 10, 2023 would be another day at sea. The events aboard ship have numerous daily activities; but, in lieu of shore excursions, the singular or weekly events seem to be held on our days at sea. Two astronomy professors have been on board for pretty much the entire cruise and offered two presentation on Cruise Day 8 which I found very interesting – Guided Tour of the Solar System and James Webb Telescope. In the late morning, a Military Meetup was attended by 40-50 veterans. Each attendee ... read more

Our first destination on the original itinerary for Holland America’s 75-day Grand South America and Antarctica Voyage aboard the MS Volendam had been Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands but had been changed to Ocho Rios, Jamaica a week or two before the cruise began. I had not yet signed up for the Dolphin Encounter & Cayman Turtle Centre shore excursion offered in Grand Cayman but was planning to do so after I had had a peek at the weather forecast. Instead, our first port of call was now Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I had been to Runaway Bay, Jamaica (less than twenty miles from Ocho Rios) twice before and had seen most of the area’s tourist destinations, so I had decided to save my “shore excursion dollars” for something new and different. Cruise Day 2, ... read more

Preparing for my departure on Holland America’s 75-day Grand South America and Antarctica Voyage, I was just having a lot of trouble getting excited about my upcoming adventure. On the surface, I thought that my lack of excitement might be because of the short (10-week) interval between my return from the five-month trip to Europe and the 2-1/2-month cruise. I, however, rarely have said, “It was good to be gone, but it’s good to be home.” I would have been more likely to have said, “It was good to be gone. Too bad I couldn’t have stayed longer.” The only time I can think of being glad that my stay hadn’t been longer was upon my return from Vietnam.“We gotta get outta this place, If it’s the last thing we ever do…” Yet again, there was ... read more

The Iceland Discovery tour by Intrepid Travel came to an official end with checking out of the hotel on Monday, 03 OCT 2022. I had previously booked a stay at the Reykjavik Downtown Hotel for before and after the tour, but, after spending one pre-tour night there, I cancelled that post-tour reservation and made a reservation for the tour contracted hotel, Fosshotel Barón, Reykjavik. Shopping and dining opportunities in the neighborhood are much greater, and I didn’t have to use my bed as a desk! With a checkout time of 1130, I took my time packing my belongings in anticipation of being assigned a different room. Lesson learned, ask first and act later. The desk clerk left me in the same room as I had while under contract with Intrepid Travel. Back up to Room 318 ... read more

SAT, 01 OCT 2022 – Day 6: Akureyri/Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Situated at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, Akureyri is the nation's second-largest city. Embark on a short walking tour of the town, taking in the striking church and other local sights. If you’re travelling between May and December, you might have the option to partake in a whale watching excursion. Ask your leader for details. Later, continue to Snaefellsnes Peninsula, home to the magnificent Snaefellsjokull Glacier, which played a starring role in Jules Verne's 1864 novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Next up is Lysuholslaug, where you can bathe in thermal pools (depending on the season) or check out the Icelandic horses grazing in the fields. Look forward to an included home-cooked dinner this evening. If you are up for it, you can ... read more

FRI, 30 SEP 2022 – Day 5: Lake Myvatn/Akureyri - Set off for magnificent Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall at 100-metres wide and with a 45-metre drop into the craggy shores of Jokulsargljufur canyon below. It’s so powerful that it’s vibrations can be felt underfoot. Continue to volcanic Lake Myvatn. Next is Namaskard, where steam rises from the sulphuric terrain and it’s hard to believe you’re on Earth and not Mars. Take a walk around the lava stacks and caves of Dimmuborgir and then observe the massive pseudo craters of Skutustadir. Continue to the crescent shaped Godafoss waterfall, where legend says a lawmaker priest threw the idols of the Norse gods when Christianity became Iceland’s official religion in AD1000. Travel on to Akureyri and settle into your accommodation for the evening. Total driving distance - approximately 250 ... read more
