Tour Day 19, Cruise Day 19 – Day at Sea Tour Day 20, Cruise Day 20; Rarotonga, Cook Islands – NO SHORE EXCURSIONS AVAILABLE – Initially, I wondered why we were stopping if there was no good reason (shore excursion) to leave the ship. After doing a little research and then hearing, on the day before our arrival, a cautionary “don’t get your hopes up” from the Captain, I now have a guess. The seas are rough in the anchoring area near Cook Island, and many cruise ships planning to tender to the island have been unable to do so because the operation was too dangerous. Indeed, our Captain launched one of the tenders early on the day of our arrival for a reconnaissance mission before making his decision. Fortunately, we did make it to shore ... read more

Tour Day 18, Cruise Day 18 – Raiatea Highlights (3.5 hours) - Board an open-air vehicle for a panoramic drive through the main town of Uturoa -- the cultural and administrative center of Raiatea. Shortly after leaving town, you will see Mount Temehani -- endemic home to the Tiare Apetahi. This extremely rare flower grows nowhere else on earth. An amazing fact about this flower is that each morning, when the sun touches the flower, the petals open with a slight crackling sound. From the bus, take in the view of the lagoon that is home to some pearl farms. Your scenic drive will pass the coastline and give you a glimpse of Polynesian daily life. Raiatea is a very green island, and your guide will point out flowers and fruits along the way. Continue on ... read more

Tour Day 14, Cruise Day 14 – Cross the International Dateline eastbound and crossing the Equator southbound. Tour Day 15 & 16, Cruise Day 15 & 16 – Our scheduled arrival time in Papeete on Day 15 was 1400 (2 PM) but only two shore excursions were available. One held no appeal and the other appeared to be a shortened version of the tour I had scheduled for Day 16. I walked into town and happened upon a nifty tropical bar showing Monday Night Football. I ordered a normal size beer and soon learned a JUMBO beer was in the offing (5 liters or about 5 quarts). TOUR - Tahiti: Around the Island (7 hours) - Head towards the east coast of the island and continue on to Matavai Bay, where Tahara'a Point offers a great ... read more

NOTE – On 15 OCT 2023, we had made port in Nawiliwili, Kauai, Hawaii, but most of the tours on this rugged island involved hiking or snorkeling. Even the pier area looked industrial and uninviting for a casual stroll, so I stayed aboard ship. No photos from aboard ms Noordam. Tour Day 9, Cruise Day 9, Honolulu, Hawaii – Pearl Harbor, Honolulu & the Mighty Mo Tour (6.5 hours) – Re-live history with a visit to Pearl Harbor and view the battleship, USS Missouri. At the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, view a 20-minute film depicting the events of the 1941 pearl harbor attack. Don't miss this chance to visit the battleship USS Missouri -- the grand ship also known as Mighty Mo. This is where the Japanese signed the surrender document that ended World War ii ... read more

Tour Day 1-7, Cruise Day – 1-7, Phoenix, Arizona to Hilo Hawaii – The flight to San Diego was just over an hour and totally humdrum. Retrieving my luggage and getting the shuttle to the hotel was routine. Breakfast at the hotel and the shuttle to the cruise port was uneventful. Upon arrival at the cruise terminal, I realized the luggage tags supplied by Holland America (complete with the wrong cabin number) were for a different ship departing San Diego in 2024. The baggage handler reacted as though I wasn’t the first person to queue at the Holland America incompetency line and promptly got me a new set of tags so my baggage would get to MY cabin THIS year. Half way through the boarding process, we were told the facial recognition function of the computer ... read more

After I broke my shoulder on 12 JUN 2023, I guesstimated that I should have enough time to heal and undergo my physical therapy before I had to fly to San Diego to begin the 2023 chapter of “The Great Adventure” on 8 OCT 2023. It turned out my last therapy session was two days before I departed. On the way to the airport, I managed to stop and help celebrate my niece’s 70thbirthday. It was nice to see her siblings, children, grandchildren and, yes, great-grandchildren. My friend, Gary, took me to the party on the way to the airport for my sixish flight to San Diego. After one night in San Diego, I boarded the MS Noordam on Sunday, October 8, 2023 for a 48-day cruise to four ports in Hawaii, seven ports in the ... read more
