South America » Brazil » Pará » Santarém March 2nd 2023

En route to Santarem, Brazil, our port of call on Thursday, March 2, 2023, we spent two days cruising the Amazon River. Well, to be perfectly honest, I’m not sure of EXACTLY what river we were cruising because Belém, our last port of call, is on the banks of the Pará River. Wikipedia says Belém is “part of the greater Amazon River system” and is “the gateway to the Amazon River” but is technically not ON the Amazon River. The “Amazon basin” is that part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. The Amazon drainage basin covers an area of about 2.4 million square miles, or about 35.5 percent of the South American continent, and is located in portions of eight countries – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pará » Belém February 27th 2023

Belém, Brazil is the capital, and largest city, of the State of Pará in the country's north. Belém, Portuguese for Bethlehem, was initially called Nossa Senhora de Belém do Grão-Pará (Our Lady of Bethlehem of Great Pará). Brazilians often refer to the city as Belém do Pará (Belém of Pará) to differentiate it from a number of other towns called Belém in Brazil, as well as the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank of Israel. It lies approximately 60 miles upriver from the Atlantic Ocean, on the Pará River, which is part of the greater Amazon River system, and is the gateway to the Amazon River with a busy port, airport, and bus/coach station. With an estimated population of 1,499,641 people, or 2,491,052 in its metropolitan area, it is the 11th most populous city in ... read more

South America » Brazil » Ceará » Fortaleza February 25th 2023

What American has ever heard of Fortaleza, Brazil? I sure hadn’t! Well, Brazil's 5th largest city was our port of call on Saturday, February 25, 2023. It has a population of slightly over 2.7 million with a metropolitan area population of over 4.1 million people. Fortaleza, Portuguese for fortress, is the capital of the State of Ceará and is an important industrial and commercial center in Northeast Brazil. According to the Ministry of Tourism, it is the fourth most visited city and tourist destination in the country, and the most important highway in the country, BR-116, starts in Fortaleza. There is typically a tropical climate, with high temperatures and relative humidity throughout the year; however, these conditions are usually mitigated by pleasant ocean breezes. The average annual temperature is 80.6 °F with the relative humidity at ... read more

First, on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (our day at sea), while we made our way from Salvador Da Bahia, Brazil to Recife, Brazil, the Oi Brasil group was busy providing complementary dance and music lessons to anyone with the stamina and/or coordination to participate. The list of “Learn to XXX” sessions on Wednesday included, “Learn to Play Samba,” “Learn to Dance Gafiera” and “Learn to Dance Samba.” Some members of the Oi Brasil group will stay aboard ship for the entire time we are in Brazil offering more “Learn to XXX” lessons. That should be fun. Recife, Brazil, our port of call on Thursday, February 23, 2023, has a population of 1,653,461 but hosts the fourth-largest urban area in Brazil with 4,054,866 inhabitants (both 2020 figures). It is the capital and largest city in the state ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador February 21st 2023

Salvador Da Bahia, Brazil was our Tuesday, February 21, 2023 port of call. The name is officially Salvador. The “Da Bahia” is merely clarification and differentiation from the other Salvadors in Brazil. As the first capital of Colonial Brazil, the city is one of the oldest in the Americas and one of the first planned cities in the world. The capital of the state of Bahia evolved on a steep bluff with two levels – Upper Town (Cidade Alta) and Lower Town (Cidade Baixa). In 1873, Brazil's first elevator, the powerful hydraulic Elevador Lacerda, was constructed to connect the city's upper and lower towns. Having undergone several upgrades (including the addition of a twin, adjacent sister elevator), elevator service remains in use today. Salvador is recognized throughout the country and internationally for its cuisine, music and ... read more

Carnival is an annual six-day Brazilian festival held, technically, only the Tuesday afternoon before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. During Lent, that forty-day period before Easter, many Christians, especially Roman Catholics, abstain from the consumption of meat and poultry. Those perishables would not survive through the end of Lent, so Carnival in Brazil or Mardi Gras in Louisiana or Fat Tuesday to many, began as a means of consuming perishables to prevent such wasteful spoilage, hence the term "carnival" evolved from carnelevare, "to remove meat." The Brazilian version of the festival is a celebration of music, dance and song whose rhythm, participation, and costumes vary from one region of Brazil to another. These rhythms were mainly developed by Afro-Brazlians and Pardos, incorporating and adapting many cultural influences, from the percussion beats of Africa to the ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » Santos February 17th 2023

Long before MS Volendam had arrived in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil on Friday, February 17, 2023, Uncle Larry had his priorities established. Santos is the biggest seaport in Latin America and is located about 19 miles from the capital of the state of São Paulo, you guessed it, the metropolis of São Paulo. São Paulo, with about 12.5 million people, is the most populous city in Brazil. Most of the goods going to and from São Paulo make their way through Santos. Santos handled 96 million tons of cargo in 2010 worth $4.36 billion U.S. dollars. The top four products exported from Santos were raw sugar (23% of total exports), refined petroleum (16%), coffee (15%), and soybeans (13%). The export of coffee at the turn of the twentieth Century, essentially, gave rise to the city itself ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires February 14th 2023

I have been able to see at least a portion of most of the NFL playoff games on the ship’s TV system. I’m not sure how all that works, but the U.S. broadcast networks are not routinely available on the ship, and, regardless of the network broadcasting the game, all the commercials have been promoting ESPN programming. Regardless, Holland America put on a very nice Super Bowl Party in the World Stage on the theater screen on Sunday evening. It was well attended with a crowd of about 5-4 Kansas City Chiefs fans in attendance. Unfortunately, the game didn’t start until 8:30 PM local time, getting very close to my bedtime. I left at half time to perform my nightly ritual, watched the third quarter from my loveseat (while the sleeping pill took effect) and began ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires February 12th 2023

First, since I have opted to participate in three shore excursions in Buenos Aires, I have decided to compose two blogs to reduce the number of pictures and the amount of verbiage in each blog and to make them more a little more “user friendly” for my readers. It was a short, overnight sail upstream on Río de la Plata from Montevideo, Uruguay to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sunday, February 12, 2023 would be our first of three days in the capital of Argentina. "Buenos Aires" can be translated as "fair winds" or "good airs," but the former was the intent of the 16th century founders (I am told in the literature) when the city’s name is placed in the context of the original name, "Real de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre." The Buenos Aires ... read more

South America » Uruguay » District of Montevideo » Montevideo February 11th 2023

We arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay bright and early on Saturday, February 11, 2023 for a 10-hour port of call, the second day of our two-day visit to Uruguay. Montevideo, as well as our next port of call, Buenos Aires, Argentina, sits on the banks of Río de la Plata or "river of silver." Where the river empties into the Atlantic Ocean, it forms a funnel-shaped indentation on the coastline. Depending on the geographer, the Río de la Plata may be considered a river, an estuary, a gulf or a marginal sea. If considered a river, it is the widest in the world with a maximum width of 140 miles. “Montevideo” is a word I just like to say. The same holds true for “Uruguay.” I even fleetingly considered Uruguay as a retirement locale. Uruguay is probably ... read more
