From the Wednesday, March 15, 2023 Daily Program, “San Juan, Puerto Rico; Arrival: 8:00 AM – All Aboard 5:30 PM; Tonight’s Attire – Casual.” Somehow, someway, all good things seem to find a way to come to an end. And so it was over for Booking Number XQVR5N and for the 2023 edition of the “74-Day Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage.” The finality of the cruise had struck when we left the Amazon behind. We had not stepped on anything but Brazilian soil for some 23 days, from 2/15/23 to 3/10/23, when we arrived in Devils Island, French Guiana. Separation anxiety, probably not; but for some reason I was struck that it all was coming to an end, albeit a very busy end! Including Devils Island, we had five ports of call in six days. ... read more

Our port of call on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 was San Juan, Puerto Rico, our fourth port in four days. As of midway through the cruise, I had subscribed to only two (both culturally oriented) shore excursions in these final four ports, and “Puerto Rico Folklore: A Latin Traditions Show” was one of them. In all of my travels, when I find folkxxxx in the title of an event, I’m usually all in. From the Holland America web site: “Puerto Rico's folklore heritage has been shaped by many vibrant rhythms from across the globe. Today's dazzling show is a virtual journey through the world of music and dance, with steps and sounds originating from Cuba, Brazil and Dominican Republic. You'll also notice the beat of Africa and a fiery expression of Flamenco from Spain. Enjoy popular ... read more

Our port of call on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 was a popular winter get-away for mainland Americans -- Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. Virgin Islands, officially the Virgin Islands of the United States, are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles to the east of Puerto Rico and to the west of the British Virgin Islands. When most people refer to the U.S. Virgin Islands, they are referring to the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas; however, the U.S. Virgin Islands also includes 50 other surrounding minor islands and cays with a total land area of 133.73 square miles. The territory's capital is Charlotte Amalie, and the residents are referred to American Virgin Islanders. The islands were ... read more

Our port of call on Monday, March 13, 2023 was Roseau, Dominica, officially the Commonwealth of Dominica. Dominica is a 290-square-mile volcanic island country in the Caribbean Sea with the highest point being 4,747-foot Morne Diablotins. Geographically, it is part of the Windward Islands chain in the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Her two closest neighbors both are overseas departments of France – Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast. There was a population of 71,293 in the 2011 census. The capital, Roseau, (population of 14,725 also in 2011) is located on the western side of the island. The island was settled by the Arawak arriving from South America in the fifth century. Barbados, a volcanic island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, was our port of call on Sunday, March 12, 2023. It is the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands and occupies an area of 167 square miles with a population of about 287,000. Technically, Barbados is an Atlantic Island but is closely associated with the Caribbean and is one of the leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean region. Spanish navigators took possession of Barbados in the late 15thCentury, and it first appeared on a Spanish map in 1511. The Portuguese Empire claimed the island somewhere between 1532 and 1536 but abandoned it in 1620 with their only remnants being the introduction of wild boars for a good supply of meat whenever the island was visited. An English ship arrived in Barbados in 1625, ... read more

Our port of call on Friday, March 10, 2023 was “Devil’s Island,” French Guiana. The prison, often referred to as “Devil's Island,” operated from 1852 to 1952 and is, in fact, three islands called Îles du Salut (Salvation's Islands), as well as a larger penal colony on the mainland. The island group’s name was given by missionaries who encamped there to escape an outbreak of plague. In 1852, the government of Emperor Napoleon III established the islands and part of French Guiana as a penal colony. The main part of the penal colony was a labor camp that stretched along the border with Dutch Guiana (present-day Suriname). Most prisoners were first sent to St-Laurent-du-Maroni on the mainland coast, where they would be assigned to work gangs to clear forests and build roads. Political, dangerous, and incorrigible ... read more

Alter do Chao, Brazil, population 3,562 in 2011, was our port of call on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 and is one of the administrative districts of the City of Santarém, which we visited on our way upstream on Thursday, March 2, 2023. According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Alter do Chao houses the most beautiful freshwater beach in the world, is popularly known as the Brazilian Caribbean and is the main tourist spot of Santarém. Holland America offered only two shore excursions, both of which had been offered in Santarém – Best of Santarem (I had already participated in a similar tour on March 2) and Tapajos National Forest (no, I'm not paying $75.00 for a STRENUOUS activity for 5 hours; in fact, I’m not participating in a strenuous activity for 5 hours if they ... read more

The port of call on March 6, 2023 was the small city of Parintins, Brazil (115,363 people in 2020). Holland America offered only two shore excursions. One was a 90-minute tour of the city on a triciclo “past the major highlights of the city.” Triciclo translates as 'tricycle,' but it's not really a trike but more a tuk-tuk in Asia. The second option was “The Boi Bumba Festival Show.” Since one of my main objectives in travel is to learn of the culture and customs, this was a no-brainer. From the Holland America web site: “The must-see Boi Bumba is one of the greatest folk festivals in Brazil. It is a world full of magic, bright colors, music, dance and folklore -- a feast for the senses. The luxurious costumes and floats, comparable to those seen ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus March 5th 2023

Our overnight port of call on Friday/Saturday, March 3/4, 2023 was Manaus, Brazil. At least one of the shore excursions was a quite pricy “spend a night in the jungle” affair. What a great topic of conversation for the nineteenth hole at the country club! Another shore excursion was a boat trip to see the alligators by night “when the jungle really comes to life.” I almost took that excursion, but life is about choices. Since the ship was leaving at 5 PM on Sunday, the alligator excursion was only available on Saturday evening; as was the “A Night at the Opera House” excursion. Since I had seen hundreds of alligators during my full-time RVing winters in Florida, I opted to spend the evening at the opera house event. That left me with an empty Saturday ... read more

Boca Da Valeria, Brazil was our port of call on Friday, March 3, 2023, and, for only the second port of call on the cruise, the Holland America itinerary says, “There are no Shore Excursions to choose from for today.” Boca Da Valeria (mouth of Valeria) is a small village at the junction of the Valeria and the Amazon Rivers and is quite a fascinating place to visit. The village has less than 150 residents, but the population swells when a cruise ship lays anchor. The locals, residents and “commuters” alike, have made a science out of extracting money from the cruise ship passengers. Many children don traditional clothing to fetch a dollar, but most dress in Western attire. Many children are toting their pet sloth, macaw, alligator, parrot, owl, capybara or other critter as a ... read more
