There Is Money to Be Made Wherever the Cruise Ship Sets Anchor San Martin (Pisco), Peru is a short distance south of Lima and an overnight at sea found us arriving at the port in early morning. On Friday, January 13, 2023, on the way to Callao (Lima), Peru, the cruise director had offered Port Talk: General San Martin (Pisco), Peru – our port of call on Monday, January 16, 2023. We were told that the only points of interest in the area are the Paracas National Reserve and the seaside village of Paracas.
From the optional tour description for
Paracas National Reserve: “Paracas National Reserve is a stunning ecological reserve located in the coastal desert. Begin your day with a visit to the interpretive site to learn about all the different species that are protected in this area, and also the evolution of this part of the coast, which is considered a paradise for the geologists. You’ll stop at Red Beach -- a wonderful and fascinating part of the National Reserve. It is the only beach with red sand and its shoreline is populated by numerous seabirds. Take in the many different desert landscapes, including Supay Beach noted for its superb cliffs formed during the Eocene Period, which will show you

All the soil in the reserve is formed by marine sediments, so you’ll also have a chance to see prehistoric fossils. For a stunning contrast, you will next visit Vineyard 1615, located in the province of Pisco. The vineyard was originally part of the Old Hacienda of Santa Cruz de Lanchas, dating back to the 16th century. A particularly fine climate lends excellent characteristics of flavor and fragrance to the grapes. The use of technology in the management and development of vineyards ensures premium pisco grapes for the production of Pisco wine. After a short, guided visit, enjoy a local beverage made with Pisco. Notes: The roads throughout the Paracas National Reserve are unpaved and can be bumpy. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a hat. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations.”
Since defective color vision is not conducive to bird watching and many other things of nature, I decided to save my hundred dollars for a more appealing shore excursion; however, since shuttles to the village of Paracas are provided, I decided to take a look-see. The port itself is several minutes by shuttle from the

Generally, I try to take an empty single seat on busses, etc. to give couples a better opportunity to sit together as well as to give me the opportunity to meet some (usually) interesting people. On the way to town, I sat next to another solo traveler, a man from Netherlands, who had much the same idea as I – walk around the village for an hour or two, have a Peruvian brew and return to the ship. Ironically, when I boarded the bus for my return, the first empty single seat I encountered was next to the same gentleman from Netherlands. We continued our conversation as though never interrupted.
After dinner, I headed for the World Stage to watch a light-hearted performance,
Argento Tango Presents: Stories. I ran into my friend from Edinburgh, Scotland, Tony, who had an empty seat next to him and a Drambuie in his hand. I joined him not only to watch the show but to have a little nightcap. The entertaining show had no dialogue and was akin to the vaudeville performances of yore. After the show, I returned to my cabin where I finished my Drambuie and watched the remainder of
