19th September 2010 We had a long day ahead! We left the hostel at 7am and got a taxi to the bus station, we then had a 5.5hour journey on a public bus to the Cambodian border and another 3 hours or so to get us to Siem Reap. Luckily i had a quick border crossing with my passport this time. I had to buy a Cambodian visa at the border which i had to pay $20 and an extra 100 Baht for them to fill out the form for me, i didn’t get the option to fill out my own form so it was probably just a bit of pocket money for them. We got to Siem Reap about 5 ish and had an hour before we were meeting up with the rest of the ... read more

18th September 2010 We had to be at reception for 7am as we were being picked up for our full day excursion. First stop was Danndensaduak (the floating markets). We drove about 90 minutes to get to the canals and we had another 90 minutes of free time to wonder round and buy what we wanted. I brought some Mango-steam which is a type of local fruit. They were so delicious and i ended up eating over a kilogram of them. After our free time we had a small boat trip on the canal which took us through a local village. We saw quite a few families washing themselves and their clothes in the canal water. Was a bit of a shocker as the water was all green and filthy! We got back onto our bus ... read more

17th September 2010 So after a pretty bad night’s sleep we got to Bangkok just after 6am. We got two cabs to the hostel which should have taken about 30minutes but the driver got lost and couldn’t find the hostel, eventually he dropped us off at what we thought was out hostel, turns out it was wrong so we had to wait for Tony (tour leader) to come and find us. We were given 2 hours to shower, unpack and get breakfast before we were meeting at reception for The Grand Palace excursion. We got the shuttle boat from stop 13 to stop 9 which cost about 30p; this was the entrance to the palace. We had to make sure we covered up as we were inspected when we entered; if you didn’t have your shoulders ... read more

16th September 2010 Again I had a lie in today! We were leaving to go to Bangkok around midday so we had to morning to do what we wanted. We got some breakfast and then decided to get a pedicure from the beauty salon down our road. It cost us 200 Baht which is about £4! We packed up out bags and check out of the hostel for 12.30pm. A mini bus picked us up and took up to the port where we were getting to ferry back to the main land. On the other side we picked up a coach which took us to the Train station for the overnight train to Bangkok. We boarded the train around 6.20pm and we weren’t arriving in Bangkok until at least 6am. The train was very basic and ... read more

15th September 2010 I had a nice lay in this morning and planned to have a chilled day by the beach. Me and Alanna headed out for some breakfast about 10.30 and then hit the beach. The beach was so pretty; we had white sand and clear blue sea. We spent a few hours at the beach and then went to The Loft for some lunch and to use their wifi. After lunch we wondered around town and i did a bit of shopping to make myself feel better after the day i had yesterday. I brought a few bits, didn’t go too mad as my bag was already over flowing! Me, Alanna and Jamila got some dinner and went to see a Cabaret show - it was very armature but it was free so what ... read more

14th September 2010 I set my alarm early so I could get the embassy as it opened. Luckily I was the first one there so I got seen straight away. I was in the embassy for nearly 4 hours whilst they were getting all the documents together to be processed and sent off to the UK embassy. I had to leave to check out of my hostel before 12 and get back asap to hear the verdict. Luckily once I got back to the embassy my passport had been completed and signed off. I now had 3 hours to get to the airport, buy a ticket and get on the plane! I got the train to the airport which was the quickest route, the train left just after 1pm and I didn’t arrive at the airport ... read more

13th September 2010 So I boarded the bus just after midnight and we set off back to Kuala Lumpur. The bus had another pick up and it turns out they had over-booked the bus by quite a lot! I got moved onto another bus along with a whole bunch of people and there ended up being two full busses. I slept most of the journey and woke up about 5 minutes before the bus station. I knew where I had to go once I got off the bus; however they took us to another station so I had no idea where we were. I found a bus and luckily it took me to where I wanted to go. By this time it was gone 7am and I had to find a hostel. I found a hostel ... read more

12th September 2010 So today I was feeling much better. We got up for breakfast and then went to find the Kek Lok Si Temple which was about 30 minutes out of town. It was gigantic!! There were lots of statues including the Pagoda of 10 Thousand Buddha’s. We got the cable lift right up to the top of the temple where we could see the giant bronzed statue and also had a great view of the whole town. We walk all the way down and grabbed a taxi to take us the Penang Hill - however train up to the top was under construction and you can’t actually walk up it so we gave it a miss. By this time my camera had run out of battery anyways. We got back to the hostel and ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town September 13th 2010

11th September 2010 After a late night last night we had to be on the road for 7am. I weren’t feeling too great - whether it was the drinks or something I ate in the day I have no idea. We had a 4 hour journey to get to Penang and the first hour was back on the windy roads in the mountains. Throughout the journey the driver had to pull over 5 times for me to be sick so I really wasn’t feeling too great. We finally got to George Town, I went straight to bed and that’s where I remained the rest of the day! I was starting to feel a bit better later on so I joined the others and went out for dinner at the Red garden food court. No photos today! ... read more

10th September 2010 We got up, had breakfast and made our way down to reception for 8.45am. We were being picked up for the Rainforest Adventure Tour which was a full days tour trekking through the rainforest to find the Rafflesia, which is the largest flower in the world. The truck drove for an hour or so on the normal roads before a 20 minute off-road drive to the start of the trek. It was going to take us between 60 and 90 minutes to get to it and then the same on the way back. There had been rain in the last 8 days so the route was pretty slippery and actually quite dangerous. We eventually got to the flower after about 80 minutes of climbing up and down hills, over small streams and fallen ... read more
