Asia September 11th 2010

9th September 2010 We had a free morning to what we wanted before leaving for the Cameron Highlands at midday. We we had a little lay in and made our way to the National Mosque. It took us about 30 minutes to get there (again getting lost on the way) and we only spend about 10 minutes inside. We had to cover up so we were given a robe and head scarf to wear whilst we were inside the mosque. There wasn’t much to see inside as we weren’t allowed into the main prayer room and some of the other bits were under construction. We decided to get a cab back to the hostel so we could finish of packing and get checked out before midday. We had a small minivan which took us to the ... read more

8th September 2010 We set off at 6.30am to get to the Petronas Twin Towers and queue up for our free pass. The gates open about 8.30 but tickets come on a first come first serve basis. They only have about 800 passes to go up so if you leave it too late you haven’t really got a chance in getting up. We decided to try and walk from the hotel using a map - however we gave up after 30minutes of walking round in circles and got a cab. We got to the towers waited in the queue for about 90 minutes and luckily we got a morning time slot so we went straight up at 9.15. The lift takes you up to the 42nd floor (about 180m high) where you can get out and ... read more

7th September 2010 The taxi’s picked us up at 8am from Baba’s House and took us to the bus station. We had about 45 minutes to grab some breakfast before getting the bus to Kuala Lumpur. It took us about 2 hours to get to the bus station and then we got a local bus from the station to the hostel. The hostels situated in the main street of China Town amongst all the stalls and shops. We dropped out bags off at the room and got the Monorail to Times Square Mall (13th biggest mall in the world!) We had a look around before heading to the theme park which was situated between the 5th and 8th floor. Its home to the biggest indoor rollercoaster in the world! We paid about £9 to get in ... read more

6th September 2010 We got up and left the hostel about 9.30am and set off to find some breakfast. We were recommended place called Limau - which was a few streets away. After breakfast we visited the Endure and Beauty museum which explained how other cultures perceive beauty. It was very fascinating to see the lengths they go to, too feel ‘beautiful’ - we saw things from ear, nose, lip, head and neck stretching to permanent scaring and foot binding. After we had finished the museum we realised there was a pretty big storm going on outside. We waited an hour for it to calm down before making a run for the mall. We spend another hour or so at the mall whist the storm was coming to an end and then made our way to ... read more

5th September 2010 We had an early start to pack up and get to breakfast before checking out of the room. We met the rest of the group at reception and got cabs to the bus station. We had a 6 hour journey and 4 bus changes to get over the Singapore border and into Malaysia. Got to the Baba House in Melaka around 5pm and checked into our rooms. The rooms were very basic!! We wondered through the night markets and went for dinner at the Mall where you could select what type of food you liked out of about 30 stalls. It was very cheap there and the meals worked out to be just over £2 including a drink! We headed back to the hostel via the night markets where we tried some of ... read more

4th September 2010 Up early and down to breakfast before checking out of the room. We took the metro down to Raffles Hotel which is the most expensive hotel in Singapore. They allowed us to wonder around the hotel and shops - not that we could afford anything though! We then headed off to the Marina, the youth Olympic Games sight and a few other tourist attractions before making our way back to the hostel. After a few snacks we got the metro to the Singapore flyer (Singapore’s equivalent to the London Eye). We got on just as it was starting to get dark and by the time we were at the top the sun had set and we could see the whole city in lights. It looked awesome and we managed to get some great ... read more

3rd September 2010 I set off for the city and heritage bus tour along with Matt, Tobias and Adrian. The bus took us to all of the top attractions in and around the city. We jumped off a few times in the city to have a good look around, and then stopped off at the Singapore Botanical gardens for an hour or so. I saw my first spider - it looked pretty big to me! We got back to the hostel and met Debs and Alanna - two girls who had just moved into our room, and decided to go on the night Safari at the Singapore zoo as the reviews seemed pretty good. We saw the fire and the animal shows and then went on a tram round the park. It was ok but didn’t ... read more

2nd September 2010 Flew into Singapore this morning, it was a very long flight stuck between a german couple and opposite a crying baby - just what you need when your trying to get some sleep! I checked into the Hangout Hostel and met a few guys in my room. We decided to get the metro to The Changi museum which is linked to the old Changi Prisions. It was quite small and not much there so we had a good look around before heading back to base. Later on we headed out to Newton Circus Hawker Centre (a local food market) where we got a few local dishes to share which ended up being quite expensive. ... read more
