10th January 2011 Another 7am start today! We did the rounds in Auckland picking everyone up from their hostels and made a stop off at the Kiwi Experience Office to book busses etc if needed. Once everyone was done we got back onto the bus to find that it wouldn’t start. 2 hours later we were still sat on the street waiting for a mechanic to come, eventually the fault was sorted and we were on our way – however the air-con couldn’t be fixed so the bus was extremely hot! So, from the Kiwi Office we headed up Mt Eden or also known as Maungawhau, where you have an awesome 360˚view of the whole city. Back on the highway towards Coromandle and we had a brief stop for lunch – it certainly was brief as ... read more

9th January 2011 I got a bit of a lay in today as didn’t need to check out until 10am. The bus weren’t leaving until 3pm so had to morning to have a wonder round town; however it was a Sunday so most of the shops were shut. We got on the bus at 3pm and had about a 4 hour drive back to Auckland. Even though it was a fairly long drive I had made a few friends which made the journey fly by. Got into the city around 7pm and checked into Nomads hostel for the night. After dinner we headed to the bottle shop and brought a few drinks to drink to drink at the hostel before we headed out to an Irish bar for some live music. ... read more

8th January 2011 It was another early start for me as I was being picked up to do my sky-dive. The weather weren’t looking too great this morning so I thought the sky-dive was doubtful and when I got to the airport, I was correct and they had to cancel it. Luckily they had space for me to try again in a couple of hours so I had to hold tight and wait for the verdict. By the time they picked me back up I could see that there were a few breaks in the clouds and then when we arrived at the airport we pretty much had blue skies with zero clouds so it was definitely going ahead this time. They harnessed me up and got me ready whilst they were warming the plane up ... read more

7th January 2011 Up very early today for a full day trip up to Cape Reinga which is the most northerly point of New Zealand. The majority of the bus where from the bus that I was on yesterday but we had a few others from the previous day. First stop was Puket Rainforest where we did a small boardwalk through the forest. The main attractions in Puket are the Kauri Trees which are over 2000 years old. We continued up the east coast and arrived in Cape Reinga around 11am where we got off and made our way up to the lighthouse which is on the tip of New Zealand. And from here you can see where the Tasman Sea meets with the pacific sea. After the short break we drove another 10minutes before stopping ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands » Paihia January 6th 2011

6th January 2011 Today I start on the Kiwi Experience Bus. Had about a 6 or 7 hour journey up to Piahia which is up at the bay of islands. I knew it was going to be a long day but it was broken up into chunks which made it bearable! I made friends with a group of people around me and at each stop I got to know a few others too. Our first stop was a breakfast / morning tea stop in Warkworth. At the stop there was a Honey Centre where they gave us some free samples of the honey they make. At the back of the centre they have a glass cabinet where you can see all the bees doing their thing which was pretty cool. Anyway back on the bus for ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Central January 5th 2011

5th January 2011 Arrived in Auckland in the early hours of the morning and got the shuttle bus to hostel. It took me about 3 hours from landing to getting to the hostel! They had 2 or 3 people working at the passport desks and I think there were 3 flights that landed in the space of half an hour! Anyways I checked into the hostel and went to bed pretty much straight away and didn’t wake up until gone 12 the next day. Bit annoying as I only had planned one day in Auckland before I was going up to Piahia (the bay of islands). I then spent a good hour trying to find a super market to get some food for the day before I gave in and brought a subway. After lunch I ... read more

23rd September 2010 We hired a Tuk Tuk and a driver for a half day trip to The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and The Cheong Ek Memorial (Killing fields). The museum was once a high school but in 1975 it got turned into S-21; a torture centre and prison for the Khmer rouge. Around 17000 people were killed in the converted school. We walked round and actually got to go into both the wood and the brick cells which is where they were both tortured and killed, the worst part was that you could still see some of the blood stains on the floor and walls in the cells. We spent just over an hour at the museum and then got the Tuk Tuk to the killing fields which took about 20 minutes. The Killing fields ... read more

22nd September 2010 We left the hostel around 8am and got a minivan to the Bus station to catch an 8.30am bus to Phnom Penh. The bus stopped twice on the 6.5hr journey; once for a toilet stop and another for lunch. We got off the bus for lunch and were surrounded by little kids trying to sell fruit, drinks and... tarantulas! They were deep fried but they also had some real ones crawling on their tops. Apparently they like to throw the real ones at the tourists to see their reaction; this was possibly my worst nightmare!!! Luckily i managed to avoid both the live and the fried spiders, however some of the guys did try a deep fried one. We got to Siem Reap around 3pm and had just over an hour to shower ... read more

21st September 2010 We finally had a lay in today! We didn’t set an alarm and we ended up not getting out of bed until 2pm! We didn’t have much planned until the evening so we went for some breakfast and had a look around the town. We planned to visit the local orphanage at 6pm where we got a tour around the site and the children performed a show for us. It was really nice to see them all so happy. After the show we all donated some money and clothes to the orphanage and got a Tuk Tuk back to the night markets. We got some food from the stalls before heading back to the hostel. ... read more

20th September 2010 Another long day ahead! We left the hostel at 4.45 am to get to Angkor Wat, buy our day passes and watch the sun rise. We were fairly early and got seats in the front row, the sun was up by about 6.40am so we then headed for breakfast. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and the only UNESCO world heritage site in Cambodia. We went to a few of the smaller temples to start and then headed to Angkor Thom - the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was pretty big and there were a lot of steps! We had one more stop before lunch and it involved a 20 minute uphill walk to get to it, we got to the top of ... read more
