Day 79 Away we go, further south down the Holland track, but of course not after a late start due to me being hooked on a book. Did I mention we had a heavy frost.. that sucked. It was a cold sleep that’s for sure. But the sleeping bags are doing there job. Todays drive was super nice. We entered the track and found it super easy with the odd rough spot. Nothing to extreme. Very enjoyable. After a short jaunt we stopped and set up basecamp and did the normal, firewood, tents and food, sausages and taters for tonight. Not bad, a bit of dirt though… oops.. Then the moon came up.. but not all of it. An eclipse. How stunning. Although I would of gaven that up for some cloud cover to keep the ... read more

Day 78 We bust through the doors of the Woolworths like some cowboys with smoke billowing and people running to hide… well not quite more like we enter quietly, I pretend to have magic and get the doors to open… sigh.. one day. LOL. We restock well this time, eggs, steak and potatoes. Woot woot were eating good the next few days. But for now we are off and running towards the start of the Holland track, but first of course we get gas at a steal of a deal, only 1.30/L with food fuel and ice we set out. The road is a nice wide gravel road till the start of the track and we motor about 70km form town and pull off on a track and hide in the bushes about 1km from the ... read more

Day 77 Superpit bound, here we are, looking a the largest stripmine in the world, able to see it from space and a stunning view from ground level for us on a tighter budget. It was a nice start to the day we spent almost a solid hour with the binoc’s out looking at all the equipment. Otherwise, we did nothing but wonder around town. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment for the night so we had a stove!!! And a stove meant Lasagna!! It’s the best. We had a feast. I happened to get my hands on a 4wd magazine and we have a few more ideas on where to head next. Woohoo, but those adventures have to wait till the east coast again. For now I have the map open and am reading into ... read more

Day 76 Kalgoorlie is in site as we plow down the muddy roads, the truck is caked in mud I cant see out the side windows.. the mirrors are coated.. the koala is soaked and not looking to impressed.. but that’s just to bad for the best seat in the house… I find a steep hill and side track a bit for a climb but decide to turn around about ¾ the way up since the next chunk was a rough stair case of rocks and we didn’t feel like dropping the pressure in the tires. About another 15km down the road I spot a lizard, don’t know what kind. But he was pretty big and I almost ran him over, he was not to impressed. As he opened his mouth the threaten me when I ... read more

Day 75 And we are off the permit road.. 2 days late, we reread the permit and end up finding out we had to get to laverton. Oh well. Were not to worried. We pack up and say our goodbyes to Hans and Anneke and move on our way once again on our own.. or so we thought, about 100km down the road I spot a claypan and have to stop to see it. About 10 minutes later hans arrives, and the fun begins. He has a blocart. A gocart type body powered by a 4m sail. And you can really tear it up, even getting a wheel up. I figure we hit about 30kmh or around that maybe a bit quicker. It was a blast, Jackie was so funny, she goes flying by screaming “how ... read more

Day 74 Lets here it for car 79 from laverton… that’s right abandoned car 79 in a range of 150km… we have seen around 350 of them and countless numbers of tires… Today not much happened, we pushed another 250 km today to make the total in this tank 782km and consumed 100l for around 12-13l/100km which we are happy with. We treat the truck to a tire rotation and a few little repairs that night. Hans and Anneke are impressed with our ability to wrench and common sense and state that they are not surprised to see us out here and even tell us of a few more remote tracks we have to check out. Followed by mentioning that they would not tell us about them if we were not competent so this makes me ... read more

Day 73 Were up and packed early, but not before we relight the fire and have a cuppa as they call it here. Lol. We say bye to our fellow campers and make our way to Warakuna, another small community for a 20L fuel up just for a safety range. The fuel pumps are caged here and sealed good, to keep certain people out. We stop for lunch at a roadside turnout and find ourselves an old tractor that has been picked clean. And a sign that says please do not remove parts from tractor, we all have a laugh and try to enjoy ichyban noodles.. but who really enjoys them.We found ourselves a rolled Pajero in the ditch and pick a few bolts off it.. muahahaha. Day 72 The permits are good to go for these few days so we move out. We decide due to strong winds not to climb uluru and move straight to the olgas, where we enjoyed a 7.4km walk in the sun, if you can call it enjoyable. Lol. Its hot out, but we have camel packs and always have an emergency 600ml bottle on hand. Some people are out here with no water… they are insane. We finish the walk with the black flies hot on our tails… they never leave you alone. We hop back in the truck and start into aboriginal land and push our way to docker river a small community where camping is permitted. Along the way after a teeth jarring drive we stop at the lesseter cave, where an early explorer ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Ayers Rock June 18th 2010

Day 71 Today Sean and I climbed Ayers rock, 348m of vertical height, hardcore I say. The first half is the worst and gets a little easier higher up but then you have to deal with the wind. So it’s a catch 22. Speaking of wind, about 100 feet up we had a really good gust and Jackie turned around and headed back to the truck. She said it was okay to call her a big baby. LOL. It took us 1 hour to make the climb then only 35 minutes to come back down. After a short breather we headed to the cultural center to learn about the aboriginals and have lunch at the picnic tables. Sandwiches FTW! We make 1 more stop to the Mutitjula waterhole for a few photos and motor back to ... read more

Day 70 Uluru bound today peeps, we stop about 20km out of the park and setup a bush camp. Screw resort prices. Lol. We can go with out a toilet. We have a shovel. LOL. But we do eventually head to the rock and buy permits. I thought it was 25 per vehicle but its actually p/p oh well. Its good for 3 days. We drive a short distance and get out for a small walk to look around. A stunning place. It looks amazing under the blaring hot sun. we head back to camp and I set of across the dunes for sunset photos from camp. Yupp free camp with a view. Life is good. ... read more
