Day 59 We figure we were doing good, all three of us are normally packed up and ready to leave by 9:30am on the average start, but the 2 couples next to us packed up in the dark and were gone before light. Wow. Way to early for me. We make our way north stopping to look at a sign covered in shoes that is almost tipped over, A nice homey setup someone made on the side of the road and then at a waterbore drilled in 1885 that is still pumping water today, although instead of 26l per second it is now down to 23 litres per second and its hot, a scorching 85c as it comes form 815 meters underground. We push on, Only having to make a short 180km drive north today was ... read more

Day 58 Sean and I head out around 9:30 to check out the town and get some info on the desert, which is why we are here. And to my surprise its still closed due to flooding, dammit, all this way for nothing. The government site sadi it would be open in june but I guess not. It’s a big let down but we deal with it and make the best of a bad situation. We run back to camp and grab Jackie and head to the Working Museum, what a collection, everything from food tins to pumps that still work from the 1800's. The owners even gave a show of some of the working artifacts, like - a cardboard recordplayer for missionaries, water powered mixing bowl, and some WWI and 2 artifacts. It was a ... read more

Day 57 Were on the road again, We are out of Dajarra by about 9am, with Rino giving us 2 stickers for our travels. It a long jaunt today another 550km round to make it to birdsville We basically just drive all day, making a few pit stops to look around at the vast flood plains, we find some ruins form a homestead house back in the 1880’s and add our names to it. We notice there is still some flooding out, as we have to make 2 detours and you can see water as far as the eye can see where there should be bone dry floodplain and desert… hmmm a green desert. We get to birdsville and set up camp in the dark. ... read more

Day 56 It must be everyones dream to camp behind a bar… LOL. The day starts off good, I have the truck up on jacks and am tearing into the other front brake that took about 2 hours after fighting with a stripped allen head bolt (note to self - we need a new one) it barely came out but we got lucky. Now we have new front rotors and pads and we are ready to take on the road. We then head to the road house for a burger, oh so good, a bit of spoiling ourselves for sure. We spend the rest of the day lounging in the sun relaxing. Followed by another beer in the pub a little later with some more conversation with Doreen, a Belgium girl on a work visa like ... read more

Day 55 We are off and running early, A last minute stop in town for supplies, ice and a few new books for Jackie and we find ourselves on a dirt road again heading for Dajarra, our stop for the night 150km south. I am not gonna lie there was a nice paved highway further west but hey, were here to have fun so the dirt road it is, I find a cutline heading straight up a rocky embankment and put the truck in 4-low and start moving slowly up the cut line, we stop on the top for lunch, enjoyed the view then decided to keep following the cut line, we follow it for about 1 hour then find a road again, except it goes to a cattle round up area, so we back track ... read more

Day 54 Today started with me telling Jackie we will be back in 3 hours.. more like 6 hours. LOL. Sean and I sit around town till 4pm, we check out the highlights of town and relax at the look out till the parts store calls. Sweet!! We have parts. Back to camp we go. Jackie doesn’t look to impressed as we roll in. oops. We start pulling the brakes apart, god I hate 4wd’s for this part. The rotor is bolted to the hub with 6 rusted bolts. Luckily A fellow camper came over, Roy, a retired mechanic and gave us a hand by lending us a breaker bar and 14mm socket. With out those 2 vital parts we would not of finished. A life saver he was. LOL. We only do 1 side of ... read more

Day 53 We decide to move on, LOL. There is a free camp 50km north of town at an old WWII memorial site. As we are packing up other campers are giving us honks as they pass. Lol. I find it funny. We supply up in town and away we go. Damn its hot out but the breeze keeps everything in check. We decide to go for a hike into the outback. I go first to check it out, and within 5 minutes am back for water and we set out. We go about 1.5km out and give up, the prickly grass hurts and it is getting harder to pick out land marks to make our way back to camp. Since its all flat and I forgot the compass at camp. We get back and relax ... read more

Day 52 And were off and running, Mt Isa here we come. We spend all morning on the highway and arrive at about 3:29pm with parts shops closing at 3:30, we order our brakes from autobarn to the tune of 114 a rotor and 70 for pads. A bit of a ding in the pocket book. They will be in Tuesday. Alrighty, its not dark out for once so we look for a caravan park to be in town so we don’t have to drive this beast anymore than needed as the brakes are a constant scream and the whole rotor is torn to bits.. shes been getting hot. Our first Stop Copper caravan park, We pay for 2 night and head to the tent area… tent area my ass… its packed with caravans with no ... read more

Day 51 There is nothing here for us, no parts shop. Nothing. Damn, and no one has spare parts for a Mitsu.. just like every other town. (note - in the outback its Toyota, holden or ford) we relax and make our plan for parts, Mt Isa, a mere 550km away. With the plan in motion we spend the day relaxing and go for a swim at the public pool, which in the outback we are finding that most are free to use, you just have to ask for a key. Awesome. We sit in the sun and read the light away. Sean and I are reading a lot more. I had already read Davinci Code in 3 days and was now onto Angels and Demons and plowed my way through that in 3 days, great ... read more

Day 50 Oh man! Have we really been here for 50 days?? Where does the time go? We pack up and restock the coolers with ice and are on the road around 10am, it sorta sucked leaving the small town, it sure was a blast. We make our way south through some mountain trails, averaging anywhere from a crawl to a whopping 40km/h the road was rough, but the views amazing, and hey! Were here to explore so why not. Jackie and Sean are making comments about my road choices… are they in for a surprise. Lol We make our way to Undara Volcanic national park to go look at lava tubes, but the cost goes from 42 dollars for a 2 hour trip to 100 for a day tour.. damn, why I can’t I look ... read more
