Day 69 To the craters!! There were 5 we could see ranging in size form 150 meters wide and 15m deep to 7m wide amazing to see what a 44kg piece of rock will do at speed. We plod on after a short 2km walk though, kings canyon here we come. Well actually not quite, I guess first if you want to save 150km of your drive you have to deal with a teeth rattling road, with speeds only hitting 20km/h for a bit. Ouchies. But then we hit paved roads and back up to 110 and were moving well. We push straight to the camp site to ensure a good spot, not that we are that picky but dammit I want to sleep on grass. So we slept on grass to the tune of 51 ... read more

Day 68 Well.. we were supposed to end up in Kings Canyon today but instead headed back to alice for a restock and to save about 250km of driving on dirt roads. We were in and out of town in about 3 hours with supplies and food and working our way south down the stuart highway, I pinned Peana and we hit the magical 130km/h but that was all she had, fyi - the speed limit is 130 lol. Its odd that she worked so hard to hit 130 but will cruise at 120 all day with no issues, oh well. We only cruised at 100-110 anyways. Our stop for the night: Henbury meteorite reserve where we camped for free.. since no one had change… oops. We will get it next time I swear. LOL. While ... read more

Day 67 Ormiston Gorge is our next stop. Located about 3 hour drive away. And well worth it. We are able to arrive around 1pm and get setup on a not so tent friendly site, but the rangers came and talked to us for a bit and said they would lay down some sand for next time, awesome… but that doesn’t concern us. Lol. But I guess I should back track to Gosse Bluff, where a 1km wide comet struck the earth leaving a 5km wide pit, amazing to be inside and then to drive about 30km away and get photos, just a steep rise of mountains in an almost perfect circle. Pictures do not show it well, you had to be there. I walked a bit to find the impact site which luckily was only ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Palm Valley June 13th 2010

Day 66 On the road by 9am with everyone showered and packed. Amazing. A short drive today to the valley of the palms. A stunning little valley with the last of the red palms in the world. Amazing to see these trees as once they are gone that is it. Jackie’s knees are bugging her so just Sean and I venture out for a short 2km hike. I didn’t use any stairs and climbed my way up to the top, only about 25 feet. Uh oh.. that got me going for more adventure. It was a stunning walk and an even more stunning drive. I am really enjoying the 4 wheeling we are doing, we are being gentle on Peana though, we don’t want to be stranded out here. We camp about 4km away from the ... read more

Day 65 Morning campers, we sleep till 9:30, what? That is unheard of. Oh well, its not like we are doing anything important today, its an r&r day. I update blogs for well over 3 hours downtown using crap internet. Lol. It sucks and is driving me insane but that’s okay right? We seriously have nothing to write about so here is a photo of a bird Jackie chased with my camera. LOL... read more

Day 64 Its 7:30 and I am up and restarting the fire as per arrangement from the previous night, first up restarts it. Lol. Todays plan get to Alice without a “matt sidetrack” I look at the rock walls surrounding us and crater, up I go, right to the top. Jackie snaps a few photos of me and my crazy climb. It was a good workout. From up top I can see everything in the gap and the valley to the other side. Its stunning, I also notice smoke about 300 meters form our camp, ha, another group of campers 5 of them in land cruisers. Cool beans, wonder if they enjoyed the opera. Lol. We are packed by 9am and start into ruby gap, to find the road moves onto the riverbed and gets wet, ... read more

Day 63 Alice springs is in sight now! But wait, Matt sniffs out another side track, a 4x4 track with levels 1-3 leading to ruby gap a stop we want to make anyways… hmmm. And were off. Lol. The trail is rough but I never put it into 4 wheel drive once. Makes me wonder about ruby gap road, it says to go in groups of 2 minimum and is rated EXTREME!! We cruise for about 4-5 hours to get to the crossroads an old abandoned town along the way. We pose for a few photos and hit ruby gap trail, about 1km down the road I find a sign that says : ROAD IMPASSIBLE haha! I laugh in the face of adversity, and were off. Another 3 hours to go 46km, the road is rough ... read more

Day 62 So much for a 3 hour day it turns into a 6 hour trek all the way to Jervious station where we refuel to the ring of 2$ a liter… ouch 150 dollars later, I guess I should fill you all in on the days previous events… I was able to sniff out a side track, I giant hill jutting out of the ground.. hmm we have a 4 wheel drive. Well with everyone giving into my crazy idea we start climbing. Oops forgot to lower the tire pressure and we are on sharp rocks. This does not end well. We hit a part of the climb the gauge in the truck is reading 30 degrees then it happened, a loose rock at the wrong time, I feel the truck sink and were done, ... read more

Day 61 Highway my ass… I don’t care what the map says, a 1 lane dirt road is not a highway… LOL. Its rough but not to bad, we have reached the plenty highway across to Alice springs. I would back track and tell you about our morning but it was boring, the usual packing and restocking. We pull onto the highway to be bombarded with safety signs and a giant boomerang. Odd. We drive about 200km to our first camp, beside a half dry river, the bugs are insane, we hide in the tents till its dark out… then we enjoy a meal of sausages and pasta and have a fire and sit under the stars with no light pollution.. its amazing. I love the outback and being away from people and tourist traps. Sadly ... read more

Day 60 Really!! Day 60, wow. Time is moving for sure, we are spending the day in town just relaxing, which is always nice, they have a huge free pool and a hot tub which we use a lot since it actually gets down to 0c at night where we are. Good thing we brought our good sleeping bags. LOL. Jackie gets super cold at night and hogs the blankets though… not much happened today, it was mostly relax and enjoy the sun and water. We spent the night around a fire with a few other travelers talking about life and trip plans and had a few drinks. And finished the night off with Resident Evil 3 lol, the series is done. ... read more
