I wish I had packed more clothes. Seems a silly thing to say as the stereotype would be to bring nothing and stock up while here... but it is proving to be more difficult than I had initially imagined! For starters, not possessing an Asian body-type sets me at a definite disadvantage, so even if I do happen upon some article of clothing that strikes my fancy it more often than not doesn't fit. It's very frustrating! The cheap clothes are too poorly designed and not even worth the bargaining time but then the price skyrockets for anything half decent. Being cheap (and also poor) makes clothing myself very difficult. Emily and I had ventured out on a mission a couple days ago to purchase some key items, and after hours of wandering around still empty ... read more

I am officially immortalized through recordings. Yes, today I received a call on my mobile from a fellow who was searching for a "voice partner". He had landed a contract through an Acting Academy, which required him and a partner to record various lessons for the students of the school to practice and go through on their own time. He got my number through my roommate Emily, and convinced me to try out for the female role. I had a three hour break today between classes, so we met up at the subway and chatted our way towards the studio. Surprisingly enough, he didn't look a thing like he sounds. On the phone he had this very deep and soothing "audio book narrator" style voice, and in person he was a short and stocky fellow from ... read more

I scarcely know where to begin! It has been too long since my last post, but trust me when I tell you that the time was well used. I feel as if this past week has just settled into one big blur, what with all the adjusting I have been doing. First of all, I have been swapping rooms frequently at the hostel, as they shuffle me around to accomidate the other guests. I have stayed there so long I seriously deserve a picture on their website as an interesting local feature. I just feel ridiculous meeting new people and having to admit how long I've staid there. All this room shifting has really disrupted my quiet routine, and I have to say that living in a hostel while working is not the easiest nor most ... read more

Yesterday was something else... I still cannot believe that the events that unfolded actually transpired. However, I am grateful to be able to write about it now, and be able to know that everything has been rectified. All things considered, I should have been rewarded the "Cool Cucumber" award for a situation that fully deserved a nervous breakdown status. (Mom, don't have a heart attack, everything is a-ok). So my morning began with one of the hostel staff approaching me to say that my tourist visa was officially expired and was wondering if I had an updated one or a permit. Now, my visa has been with the company who is responsible for transferring it into a business visa for a week and I was told to pick it up this Tuesday. In the meantime they ... read more

So I have realized that it had been quite some time since I had ventured out on some sort of sightseeing "touristy" activity, and decided to once again, find some group to mooch an adventure off of. The Irish lads had decided to go to the Zoo and having no conflicting arrangements, I figured that was as good a venture as any. We eagerly researched all the animals we might find, and were very much looking forward to seeing Gibbons (whose mating call you can hear 1km away) and various other rare creatures. The plan was to meet at 11am and continue from the hostel to the Zoo. Of course, being boys in a crowed dorm, and suffering from a lack of sleep due to some "epic snoring", they were late and we didn't leave the ... read more

So I have attended two interviews so far (canceled a couple due to scheduling malfunctions) and have more set up for later on in the week and next week. We are approaching my first holiday here in China, on May 1st and the following three days there are Dragon Boat Celebrations happening throughout the lakes of the city. I can only imagine what the vendors will be like then! My interviews have gone well, and each place has offered me a position if I chose to take it. The first one I went to was set up by this little man named Sandy who met me at the subway station and then we transited to the school together. We got along swimmingly and I felt quite comfortable and at ease with this man. The school ended ... read more

I still haven't adjusted to the ring of my mobile; so this morning, as I'm blissfully asleep after a long night out, I awoke to an irritating jingle and assumed immediately that one of my roommates must have left before their alarm went off. So I lay and listened, becoming increasing irritated, and grabbed my phone to check what ungodly hour it was (10:52am). Upon glancing at my mobile I realized I was responsible for the noise offense, and grumpily answered the phone. A Chinese voice on the other line replied, informing me that they had received my resume and were very interested in setting up an interview. We planned to meet at 2:00pm later this afternoon, and (still sleepy) I hung up. Immediately after I rested my head back down on the pillow, the blasted ... read more

Alright... so today I caved in and realized that I absolutely needed to hook up the mobile I purchased from the Silk Market a couple days ago. I have been in denial regarding this phone, as I had only recently been congratulating myself at my ability to function well without one. Alas, looking for work really does require access by phone, so I borrowed one of the girls from the hostel today and through her, was able to communicate in the local shop that I needed a SIM card (which luckily came with an 80RMB credit of "minutes" on it!). My one consolation with having this phone is that it's so cheap here. My brand new Nokia 1200 (not an impressive phone) cost about $37.00 and apparently most people don't spend more than $15.00/month on minutes. ... read more

One of my favorite parts of living in the hutongs, is that there is an endless supply of excellent local food. Yes, if a health inspector ever attempted to even glance their direction, they would instantly be shut down, but luckily, this is China. One favorite in particular is this streetside hotpot, where there are a variety of meats and vegetables laid out kabob style, and you take a little basket and just throw whatever you wish inside. I have discovered that lotus is quite tasty. Tell the girl at the pot, "lada" (for spicy) and then wait the two - three minutes it takes to cook. After it is finished, they pour your mixture into two plastic bags and send you on your way. It looks like slop in a bag, but so delicious and ... read more

Today has just been fantastic! Josh (the American) and I met up with his friend Josh (the other American) and had lunch at Paul's Steak & Eggs. These American's are bad influences as I have now had two western meals in the past two days. Just ridiculous. However, when I noticed that they had greek salad (FETA!) and just caved. Mixed greens don't exist here, but overall it was just really nice to eat something fresh. After lunch we decided to run some errands and while we were looking for American Apparel we got off at the wrong stop, but God smiled down on us and we stumbled across an amazing JamicaBlue coffee shop. My buds were salivating just at the mere thought of GOOD coffee (near impossible to find) and as a cherry on top, ... read more
