Started the day with lacing up my hightops, in an attempt to be properly respectful during the days adventures. You all know how cranky I get just wearing socks, so the idea of tromping around socked and shod for the day filled me with certain misgivings and I was hoping to make it through the day without snapping. I figured it was safer for me to explore alone today (wearing shoes and all) so I set off for Jingshan Park (which is located directly behind the Forbidden City) as I heard that if you climb to the top of the hill it affords an excellent view over the city. An interesting fact is that the hill was built out of the earth excavated from around the Forbidden City to built its moat. The day was lovely, ... read more

Gah... I am kicking myself really hard at the moment. Yesterday I had planned to meet up with Cecilia, she was going to take me to lunch and we planned for her to come to the hostel at noon and then go out from there. So in the morning, I was just lounging about the hostel killing time, and one of the British boys was heading out to see Mao as it was the last thing on his list to-do and was leaving that afternoon. He was looking for a partner to accompany him, and as I had nothing better to do at the time, I thought I may as well go. (You have to see Chairman Mao right?) We quickly walked the 7 minutes or so it took to get there and then were just ... read more

Today was another beautiful day... and one that I chose to relax and forgo tourist activities. Initially my plan had been to visit the Temple of Heaven, but once I set out on the lengthy walk I became absorbed with simply strolling down various streets and completely lost track of where I was and missed my turn. After discovering that I had walked way past my destination, I just decided to keep wandering and turned my day into an outdoor gym. I have become quite obsessed with physical activity, and now I cannot let a day pass without walking for a minimum of two hours. (Mom and Dad - stop laughing). Most street crossings are either above or below ground, so at every crossing I would run up and down the stairs and then continue on ... read more

Our hostel here hosts this "Secret Wall Tour" where they guarantee you will be the only ones on the wall, so I signed up to go this morning. We had to meet at 7:00am for the bus pick-up and then crammed into a rickety mobile and bounced and jounced our way for two hours out of town. Passing through a run down village we picked up this ancient Chinese man and carried on for about 10 minutes out of the village and were dropped at the base of a hill. Because we were so out of town I actually experienced my first clear blue skies slightly scattered with white fluffy clouds. That alone was such a miracle. We hiked up and up and up, seemingly nowhere, until suddenly we arrived at the base of the wall. ... read more

It was awfully muggy today. You can be greatly deceived upon waking, and gazing at the bright light stream in. Expectations arise of glorious sun, and while the outdoors are indeed bright - they are grey. Or beige. A strange light nonetheless. It makes photo taking a frustrating business, because there really is no view. So panoramic shots will be disappointing - or impossible. Alas. I slept in today. This is my first morning of arising after 7:00pm, so perhaps I am adjusting to the jet lag. I was even able to stay up until midnight yesterday so there is hope for me yet! Juliet was cracking jokes regarding the youth of today at my expense. Apparently I am quite lame. (Tell me something I don't know). Oh well, I will show her yet. Bust a ... read more

Juliet and I explored 798 Art District today. It's located in what once was a largely abandoned military electronics complex, but now is transformed into unbelievable gallery and studio space. Even the exterior of several of the buildings has been made into art. Such a funky place, fringing at times into overtly touristy (unfortunately) but still lovely to see. Only the photos can really portray the wonderful time we had. (I will do my best to find some time to upload some soon!) I braved fresh vegetables today! I have been avoiding all uncooked veggies in an attempt to prevent diarrhea while out and about. (Note: thus far have not suffered unusual bowel movements). However, when passing a small cafe, we noticed this woman enjoying a tasty looking salad, and suddenly there was nothing to be ... read more

Lily ended up not being able to make our date for the Forbidden City, and a little forlorn at the prospect of not having a friend I hung around the hostel to see if there was anyone I could force to be my friend. Sitting in the common room, I started to fire out comments and creep into others conversations. I soon discovered that a British lady, Juliet, was headed for the Forbidden City and she graciously accepted my offer of accompanying her. The two of us trekked off in the direction of Tiananmen Square, and both experienced the spooky goosebumps that occurred while crossing that ill-fated place, and imagining the hordes of students that had been struck down and butchered there. We followed the masses of tour groups heading towards the Forbidden City and I ... read more

I forced myself to remain in bed until 7:00am this morning. (Still trying to adjust to the 15 hour time difference). Upon rising, I ventured outdoors and was immediately bullied into buying dumplings off the street. It was a fair breakfast and I snacked on these steaming balls as I began my explorations down the various snaking alley's of the hutong. I was surprised to see how empty the streets were, having steeled myself for the hectic crowds Beijing is so stereotyped for. The only thing I noticed was the intense stares I gathered from the general populace. All I could hope for was that I didn't have any vegetables stuck in my teeth. I found my way back to the hostel relatively easy, and was quite proud of my inner compass. A little later I ... read more

Well, after an 11.5 hour flight, I have finally arrived safe and sound in Beijing. No real complaints over the journey, only three (pretty terrible) movies were playing looped over and over. I watched Finding Nemo and got a little sentimental/emotional over the fish's journey, then realized that I really needed to sleep as I was clearly losing it. The food was pretty yummy... bok choy with everything! I mostly tried to doze to pass the time, so was pretty groggy when we landed. I had been a little nervous about passing through Customs armed only with my one-way ticket, but luckily there were no major issues there. The subject was actually never discussed and no proof of exit was required! Beijing is 15 hours ahead of everyone at home so I'm pretty tired at the ... read more
