Truly this is the end of an era... it's that time in Beijing where the summer has drawn to a close and the laowai's are winging their way back home. All the "farewell parties" are quite bittersweet and there are some folk who, though I didn't know them for long, will be missed. We just wrapped shooting yesterday a film in which I was the star of. Glamorous no? No... truly no. Last week as I halfheartedly scanned through the employment ads I noticed one where they were looking for female voice actors (having experience in this field) I dashed off a quick reply and continued searching for work. No less than an hour later I received a phone call and was offered a film role (not what the ad was about) on the spot. No ... read more

Life post-employment has been interesting… as far as an ego boost goes it’s been really encouraging to receive phone calls and messages from students who sadly express their disappointment over my departure. One girl who had just returned from her vacation, was informed of my departure and called me immediately to find out how I was doing and to tell me how much she missed me. My students are very sweet and will be greatly grieved by me. They truly were a spectacular bunch of individuals. During Christi's stay a couple students were determined to introduce us to various cuisine and treated us to some evenings out. The first student and his wife took both Christi and I out for dinner to experience the tastiness of Sichuan delicacies. It was an extraordinary feast with amazing spices ... read more

Yet again, life never ceases to keep you alert and guessing... I've had two major bombshells dropped on me this week: One: My roommate will be moving out of our apartment to seek housing closer to her work, and with her boyfriend. I admit that this didn't come as quite a shock to me as I know how stressed she has been from the commute and it is cheaper living out in Wudaokou. I guess I had been mentally preparing for this departure for weeks. Yes, it is sad to see her go, but she isn't leaving me hanging. Our place is paid for until November, so there is no major rush for her to leave. Obviously we will try and find a replacement much before then, but right now the pressure is off. We've had ... read more

I taught a grand class on Friday! The school policy now requires us to follow a truly stupid teaching manual that I (and all the students) loath and despise. My whole philosophy had been to find topics of general interest or cultural interest and then during the discussions teach vocabulary and correct grammar and phrasing. Being that the majority of our students are adults, to have to discuss the completely inane topics that the manual presents has been a source of irritation, as we do not sell "courses", merely hours. Thus, my boss' reasoning that following the manual promotes recognized and patterned growth totally misses the mark, as the students only attend when their schedules permit, and we have people coming and going as their hours are bought and then finish. I tend to disregard this ... read more

Beijing is so overcast right now... every morning upon waking I am encountered with this blinding greyish-whiteness that is so thick I can barely make out the buildings opposite my apartment. The heat and mugginess has not been very motivating. One can usually forgive the heat when the outdoors provides brilliant sunshine and a blue sky... somehow you feel it is all worthwhile. This weather however... blah. I have begun recording again. I was surprised early on in the week with a telephone call from the lady I did some work for previously. Now this particular woman is so unbalanced that every second you spend with her, you cannot gauge whether she will be pleased or angered by your performance. Truth be told, the last time I encountered her she was so rude that I supposed ... read more

Truly China is the land of opportunity... and random chances. During yesterday's last class my teaching manager entered the room to request that I meet with him during the break we have between the first and last half of the 2 hour teaching session. A completely harmless request, but with the frightening working conditions of this company I couldn't help feeling slightly uneasy over the impending meeting, and I spent some minutes wracking my brain to try and remember any indiscretion I had commited recently. (They change their minds constantly over proper decorum). I couldn't recall anything incriminating, and attempted to let the matter go in my mind and concentrate on the task at hand - discussing various degrees of drunkeness with my students (the things they wish to learn!) Eventually the break arrived and I ... read more

1. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU SEE IN THE MORNING? When I wake up I see the hazy skyline through my large bedroom bay window, partially blocked by articles of my clothing hung haphazardly about, in an attempt to dry them. (Must purchase some sort of drying rack or line! 2. LOOK AT YOUR LEGS - IN WHAT CONDITION ARE THEY? The right leg looks alright, but the left is in a laughable/pitiable condition. One freshly picked knee scab, large greenish bruise on lower calf, one bandaid, and even my left shoe is splitting at the seam. Stairs are not my friend. 3. WHAT IS A STAPLE IN YOUR FRIDGE? Emily and I commonly keep a good stock of yoghurt (you drink it here). If it is not being consumed as a beverage, we mix ... read more

That the is cry and literal postering of Beijing. Everywhere you look you see "out with the old and in with the new"... everything is about immediate change with no thought and absolute disregard for the future and its consequences. This attitude effects everything... buildings, lifestyles, business, etc. My head is spinning. As many of you now know my company has restructured. Oh! But I have one and a half months left in my contract, so how can it change you might ask. Well, I asked this as well, and the reply I received was a blank stare and "This is China" response. (Of course). Haha, why did I even bother? So everyone now has been demoted to a part time position, which means I now work 10 hours a week and earn 4800/month. Ahhhhhhh!!! Overall, ... read more

... so apparently I wasn't out of the woods as far as the illness went and experienced a relapse. Classes were a real struggle yesterday and one of my students took real pity on me and accompanied me to the pharmacy to ensure I received the right medication. Bob is a funny looking fellow with spindly limbs emerging from clothes that are several sizes too large for him; I suppose it's his version of "gangsta". Friendly guy however, and always so helpful. Even when we are just having our class he is always on the look out to see if your water needs refilling or seeing if there is any other way he can assist you. I guess my endless sniffling concerned him enough to basically drag me to obtain good Chinese medicine. Hope this stuff ... read more

I was dripping with sweat in the subway today. It's a terrible feeling to be squished in that cramped space, armed with bulky backpack and computer, hair plastered to your forehead, and trickles of sweat tickling you as they crawl down your spine. Blaaaahhhhhh. Showering is rendered useless as you feel disgusting within three minutes of stepping outside. There are certain streets in particular that seem to just suck in the heat to blast you with as you trudge through. I miss swimming. The building complex I'm in has a giant "sprinkler-style" fountain in the courtyard... I am seriously considering running through it on my way back, but perhaps that would be a poor example to the many children in the area. The fact that I've never seen a pack of kids race through makes me ... read more
