I slept really well, after a very frazzled day, but it feels like it was worth the hassle! The bed is huge! I think the biggest I’ve ever slept in! My day started with the shower. I’m well out of my comfort zone here! Not with getting a shower, obviously!… ha ha… it’s the size of the shower head…. Again, huge! I’m starting to think that size matters in Bali! It’s one of those that make you feel like you’re in the rain. I can see the nice side to that effect, but as a person that does not get her hair wet in the shower, it’s got its problems for me. Therefore, my shower today, was a physical work out, continually bending my head and neck backwards to avoid the ‘rainfall’ on my head!! I ... read more

This is the final week and is one that always brings mixed emotions. A sadness that the trip is coming to an end but joy about returning home. Sri Lanka is certainly a beautiful country and across two trips, eight years apart we have seen a reasonable amount of what it has to offer. Saturday and we had booked a safari through our accommodation in Wilpatthu national park. It was another early start, 6am and in keeping with the place we collected our picnic basket with our breakfast. The park entrance was only 15 minutes away and we paid our 22,500 LKR entrance fee, that's 34€ each. We had a jeep to ourselves and our driver was Namaal and he was great at spotting things. Most people go expecting to see leopards and are usually disappointed, ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Taipei March 4th 2024

A quick look at a map reveals that Taiwan is located off the coast of China, sort of between Japan and the Philippines. When planning this six-week journey, Taiwan became one of those destinations that we refer to as, “while we’re in the neighborhood” stops. When you spend 15 hours in a plane from North America to reach this part of the world, you must consider how you can maximize your travel time. Additionally, we needed to consider if we would find ourselves in this part of the world again and what might become of Taiwan in the next decade or so, given that the Chinese still, and always will, consider Taiwan as part of the Peoples Republic of China. Things could get ugly in this part of the world someday… As with many countries around ... read more

I’ve set the alarm for 2:30am. The taxi will be coming to pick me up at 3am. I’m already to go! As I was getting my luggage out, Ella came in, so perfect timing! We said our goodbyes, with tears on both sides, I know she living her best life, doing what she’s doing, but it’s hard leaving her behind. We’ve had a great time together. The drive to Colombo airport is about 2 hours. I nodded, and dozed most of the way. We arrived there at about 5:30. I went straight to the self log in, as the online system had directed. I went through the procedure, but no boarding card, or luggage tag came out of the machine. I know I should have enough time, a couple of hours, but looking at the queues… ... read more

Correction from earlier in the week, the iguana… it wast an iguana at all, it was a sea monitor. I’m still no wiser, but thought I should correct myself! This will be my final amazing breakfast with Ella at Basecamp. As I leave tomorrow. In one thought, I seem to have been busy and done a lot, but I’m the next thought, I think…. Whooosh… we’re did the time go! I will be happy to move on to the next phase of my journey, but also dad to leave Ella behind! After breakfast we decided to crack on and get Ella’s highlights done. Honestly, I’m dreading doing them. It’s been around 25 to 30 years for me since I did this sort of stuff. In fact woven highlights hadn’t been invented when I was in salon!!!! ... read more
