Last year was the first trip back to India since the Covid escape of March 2020. This fall as I told Taylor my plans for this year's trip, he said "but I've been to India 4 times, can we explore somewhere new?" I was unimpressed at first with his disappointment in returning to my homeland! But when I realized he used the word explore, I knew this was exactly the kind of child I was attempting to raise...one who was excited by new adventures and discovering all the world had to offer. He also asked to skip traveling altogether and just visit his family in Vancouver....so, after many conversations and many feels and many flight searches, I landed on a 2 month trip to Vancouver, Thailand and India. Some new mixed in with family time and ... read more

Catching up on the action from yesterday. Just got down to Wednesday morning breakfast. I’m still not used to which day it is. The hotel is remodeling the bar area and the front half of the dinging area. also looks like they are adding back in those crazy nightclubs from way beck when. 6:15, and there are 3 people here. Very different. Most of the seating is in the upper deck area where we never really went. Standard good breakfast as before. Now back to yesterday….. The trip from Inchon South Korea, to Bangkok, was a bit of a blur. Video choices weren’t great and I couldn’t concentrate on my book, so I gave in to sleep, except for when I was rammed into during the meal service. We landed 15 minutes early although there was ... read more

Today, we'll depart from Yeosu for our visit to Busan. The journey will take over 3 hours. Our first stop in Busan will be Gamcheon Culture Village, where houses cascade in a staircase-like fashion along the foothills of the coastal mountains. This vibrant community features alleys adorned with lively murals and sculptures created by its residents. After lunch, we'll visit Gukje Market (Bupyeong Kkangtong Market). This market gained prominence during the Korean War for supplying canned goods to the US forces. It served as a central hub for foreign products in Korea and earned the moniker 'Gukje (International) Market' due to its extensive collection of rare goods. Continuing our exploration, we'll experience SPA LAND Centum City, situated within the world's largest department store, Shinsegae Centum City. This luxurious and contemporary Korean traditional spa (Jjimjilbang) spans across ... read more

An update on our visit to Lombok!! It was an hour's drive from our port to the beautiful beach at Seniggi. When we disembarked the ship we were greeted by a steel band and many stall holders selling souvenirs. A cacaphony of noise enveloped us. Lombok is less developed than its neighbouring island of Bali but has some great scenery. During our hour long bus trip to the beach we went through the capital city of Mataram and the old city of Ampenan. The streets were lined with stalls and shops, some very dilapidated while others were better maintained. It was Friday so the holy day on this mainly Muslim island. The mosques are abundant and are brightly painted. The main mode of transport is motor bike or scooter and helmets seem optional. Most had at ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hai Phong March 10th 2024

After an overnight sleep at Hanoi, I headed to Cat Ba Island. In Vietnam, one of the most famous places to visit is the Ha Long Bay. People visit for the limestone karsts and the clean waters. But given its popularity, it can get crowded. So I chose Cat Ba (pronounced as Cas Ba), the next door neighbour, much less touristy and the same landscapes. Cat Ba (means Island of Women) is named after three women from the Trang Dynasty of Vietnam, is a 285 square KM island comprising of the Cat Ba National Park. It's being developed as a tourist destination, but because it shares the same land and sea as Ha Long Bay, you get to see the same landscapes. After arriving, I explored the island a bit the first day and rested. Next ... read more

Our destination today is Jeonju Hanok Village with over 800 traditional Korea houses. The village is famous among tourists because of its atmosphere that strongly contrast with the modern city around it. Choose your preferred Hanbok, Korean National Costume and make a special memory wearing Hanbok with your companions. You will explore Gyeonggijeon Shrine which was erected in 1410 and holds the portrait of King Tae-jo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. Afterward you will have Jeonju Bibimbab lunch at a local restaurant. Following that, we will proceed to Jangseong, where Baegyangsa Temple is situated within Naejangsan National Park. Upon arrival you will experience Conversation over tea with a Monk. The combination of the mountain and valleys on both sides creates beautiful scenery. Nature reveals its beauty throughout all seasons here, especially through the red maple ... read more

It is not unusual to hear from us that once again we are chasing a bucket list item. This particular one was generated as usual from those dang National Geographic magazines. This time, we were in search of those wonderfully photographed snow monkeys. Now technically, they are Japanese macaques, but since almost everyone calls the “snow monkeys,” that’s what we’re going with. We were eager to get to Nagano in early March to see the snow monkeys. We had read the best chance of seeing them in the snow was February, but we would not be able to get there until the 10thof March and yet we remained hopeful. Snowy snow monkeys here we come! A late morning flight from Okinawa to Tokyo and then a train ride had us arriving in Nagano late afternoon. We ... read more

I woke naturally this morning, and at a reasonable time, 8:50! It was actually ten minutes before the alarm went off. Today is moving day, which is always a bit messy! I did my bag sorting last night, so there’s not much to be done this morning. Funny thing happened before I left my room though. I thought I’d really done it this time! Ha ha! Last night, for other reason than curiosity… I noticed the locks on the door! I usually lock the door when I get, no change there… then I noticed the chain lock, which I hadn’t seen before. I thought to myself, really, is there a need for that much security? So, obviously, I started fiddling with it, then put the chain lock on. Ah nice….. until I tried getting out this ... read more
