Today we had a slow morning which is okay because I don’t mind doing my own thing for a while. Once everyone was up, and we are in the afternoon now, we headed for some food and the boys couldn’t wait any longer to rent bikes. Now, with not even a decent level of cycling proficiency in me, I decided that adding a motor to the equation may not be my best move. But with Alex - our friend from home who we’ve met up with again, who’s ridden in Thailand for a few months - I figured I’d be okay. We took it really easy, the roads are clear and it’s a pretty quiet place. There you go Mum and Dad, we were fine. Andy on the other hand rented what is most definitely not ... read more

The town here is all geared up for the parties and tourists which is something I usually avoid but it has been good fun to order western food that’s actually delicious and safe to eat while curled up on sofas watching episodes of the inbetweeners in the heat of the day. Trying to stay out of the sun for now but enjoying the beach and of course reading avidly. I’ve got a whole year of reading for pleasure to catch up on after all. Oh and bizarrely, the locals have decided to build a house next to us. It’s quite mesmerising to watch as it’s constructed pretty rapidly before your eyes. We saw something similar in Laos, a temple expanding it’s size courtesy of the local monks mixing concrete etc. I’m enjoying watching it being built ... read more

None of us really slept, especially with a midnight stop, so it was a bizarre night. The aircon for me is always too cold which I can handle except every once in a while you get one that drips. So I was rained on all the way there, another use for my pashmina to keep me dry. Arrived at 3am which was quite bizarre but we made ourselves a little camp of plastic chairs, got a chance to talk to some others on their way to the full moon party and even got to see the sun rise. Being near the ocean at last is exhilarating. The anticipation was thrilling. When we finally got on the ferry was I ready to personally request an immediate departure. The journey once we got going was very pleasant; we ... read more

An hour ferry from Koh Samui and we were at our final destination of the holiday... Koh Pha Ngan. We got a taxi to our resort - Chantaramas, a luxury resort right next to the beach. It is perfect! Gorgeous rooms with HUGE bed, indoor and outdoor shower, a bath fit for a king, room service, big tv, bar, restaurant, infinity pool, amazing views of the beach and sea...and the best bit... there were about 12 people in the whole resort, us being 4 of them! Checked in, showered then hit the pool. Sampled a few cocktails from the huge cocktail menu in the sun. Went to Mona Lisa for tea - in the town. The town was dead! We saw about 3 people. I think this time of year people stay on Koh Samui and ... read more

I heard on the grapevine (clearly from Edmunds) that you said you wasn't featured enough in my epic blog. For this I can only apologise and dedicate this mini blog to you.... hem,hem.... Rhys Flanagan, what can I say about you. I've known you three days and it feels like a lifetime. This is not always a compliment. You are a brother. I like you almost as much as much as I like the Martin's. With your dashing good looks and witty banter, I can only say that we are twins born of the same mother. I've never seen your mother, but my mother is both hot and funny, so I will say my mother gave you away at birth to a distant relative because I was the prettier twin. You were then brought up thinking ... read more

Well, the train journey was a bit of an adventure. This time I took the top bunk, and slept fairly well. I was trying hard not to get terribly annoyed with the constant hawking of food and drinks, and I managed to only complain when this one particular porter came through. His tone and manner will continue to haunt me :-) It was a long journey - after having taken an overnight train from Chiang Mai, and just 24 hours or so in Bangkok, we faced the next overnight train, an hour songteaw ride to our minibus, an hour on the mini bus and then about three hours on a decidedly non- luxurious ferry. We are definitely using local transportation! Nai, our guide upon whom we've all become quite dependent, told us that the only thing ... read more

I've found a pretty special beach here (Koh Huan) and highly recommend you spend some time here, particularly if you're on a budget and want somewhere to chill and have peace. From Bangkok: night train to Than Surat, ferry to Koh Samui, taxi to Big Buddha beach, 30-minute ferry to Haad Rin, walk to the other side of the town to Sunrise beach, hire a water taxi for 300 baht (for the whole boat, regardless of number of people) for a 10 minute ride to Koh Huan. Sunrise/Sunset Beach / Haad Rin This is where the popular (or in my case, dreaded) Full Moon Party takes place. 10,000+ partiers flow across the country and into this drain for the monthly party. The town is more or less empty during all other times, and dozens of hostels ... read more

We arrived at Koh Phanang island on Saturday 2nd 18 hours after we left Bangkok. We checked in at the V-View resort where we had our own private bungalow on the beach for about 9 quid each. The bus journey was overnight so we were pretty knackered therefore we didn't do much with our afternoon apart from relax. On Sunday we hired some scooters costing us a grand total of 4 quid each and we went off and explored the island all day. It was so much fun and they were fast too, at one point too fast for Oli who misjudged a corner and ended up driving along the grass for a short stretch. We went to a waterfall which was rubbish in comparison to the ones we had already seen in Central America, there ... read more

Hello from the beautiful island of Ko Pha Ngan! It's six days since we left England and you'll all be pleased (really really jealous) to hear that we're having fun in Thailand. Pha Ngan is infamous for its full moon beach parties and, although we knew we wouldn't be able to make it to the monthly alcohol-fest, when we arrived on the island we discovered that a Black Moon party was being held on the 18th. Perfect timing, right?! Back in Surat Thani we had already paid for one night's accommodation in preparation for our arrival so when the boat landed at the port we knew exactly where we were heading. What we didn't realised was quite how remote the Haad Gruard Beach Resort was. By day, it was a beautiful collection of wooden bungalows with ... read more

Hey guys, We've not really been doing much whilst we've been here. We've just taken the chance to relax for a while...and it's been goooooood. Half way through our week in Samui we booked a minibus tour to enable us to see around the rest of the island (the best way is to rent a motorbike but that wouldn't be a good idea for us seeing as though neither of us can drive!) On the tour we saw various Wats (Temples) including Big Buddha which is Samui's most famous, a super creepy mummified monk, a monkey show, a waterfall (with Elephants at the bottom!) and the island's largest town: Nathon. Apart from that we've been typical beach and pool bums. On our last night we just lazed by the pool and treated ourselves to a couple ... read more
