We don’t actually have to do any more chores, we can just drift in and out, they have just sort of let us free and groupless but always get pulled over when the fruit trucks come in. The scale of fruit and vegetables that we shift every day is ridiculous but my throwing and catching is vastly improving. I had a moment where I walked up to the truck, backed up against the platform, but there was a gap. Yes, I stepped and fell straight down. I’m just one disaster after another, more embarrassing than injuring. After fruit we walked to the forest around the part and found bare trees. By bare I mean trees that haven’t been protected by an orange cloth, tied to protect them from deforestation, a Buddhist tradition. I climbed up to ... read more

Today was our first day back and to my credit, i did get up and I did do my chores. Afterwards I went to walk one of the 10week old puppies, cannot explain how wonderful she was. We got to share our story with all the new volunteers which was really special. Having had the time with the dogs, I’m enjoying a new ease around the park dogs and feel like I understand them so much better. They are all rescue dogs that have had tough lives and the new confidence and refreshed compassion I feel for them if something I’m pleased to be able to offer. I really feel part of the community here now and am overjoyed that I opted for a second week. If I had the time, I’d intern here in a ... read more

Today we left first thing and drove all day. At one point we got very lost and this meant getting back to the park after 11pm. The journey was pretty good down time as we had movies and I had my kindle and the music I’ve been given along the way onto my laptop. It was good reflection time. We had many stops which meant lots of treats along with many unfortunate meal options. I appreciated the time being in a smaller group and having a shared experience, makes you feel like you are returning as part of something. Lucy really appreciated my arriving back at stupid o’clock, Lots of love to everyone in the uk, love Katie xx... read more

Went straight to sleep after breakfast for an hour in our hotel and had to be rung to wake up. We got onto the bus to the dogs feeling apprehensive and still very drowsy. We had prepared ourselves for the absolute worst which was wise considering the situation is pretty desperate. The first sense that the scene confronted was smell, this spoke of the massive population kept with limited staff and within inadequate space. The dogs are being held in an agriculture quarantine centre usually used for cows. The dogs are in large concrete pens, hundreds in each, over 2060 on the site including two litters of puppies. The dogs are not yet sorted by sex, they came off the truck 2days ago, but puppies is the last thing they need. Our first job was to ... read more

Today we had our final chores and then got ready to leave early afternoon. We journied to Chaing Mai city to the main office to collect t-shirts, medical supplies and some of the soda and sweets were missing at the park. It took a long time to get everybody in one place and ready to leave. Even then we made a long stop at a huge mall to get blankets and m&m’s for the road so it was a slow start. Finally, we left and were made as comfortable as you can be when we are in a minivan all night. When we stopped for dinner, we got free cake because we are going to help the dogs, which was delightful. That dinner was the first time in a long time that I’ve said I’m a ... read more

Today we were all feeling a little tender and opted for working in the elephant kitchen. Music was out main motivator. We then took the tractor to transport any rotten fruit to compost, few volunteers. I predicted I’d be of little help compared to the guys who were already in the truck but I’m happy to help. I got a lot of teasing, but did my fair share, when I could hardly move the buckets more than an inch by myself. This afternoon, we mixed concrete, my specialty. Everything is done manually here so it is hard work. We lay a path and that was an afternoon well spend. We had tea and biscuits and sat out with the elephants before supper, so lovely here, can’t express how much. The Elephant Nature Park is such a ... read more

Unfortunately, I slept terribly - typical, because I’m having an allergic reaction to something. I have a rash that goes from my cheeks to my knees, it is very sad. Achey muscles, headache, temperature and quite poorly too. Chinese balm, paracetamol and the strongest anti-histamines and I’m fine but it’s making me want to itch like I have chicken pocks, it’s slightly maddening. We had our chores today and having fun with all the volunteers, trying to keep my mind off the baby. Something that helped with that was visiting the school. I went straight for the four and five year olds and had an amazing time. Children are so much fun and you don’t need language, they just want to interact and love you. We played with our cameras and sung nursery rhymes and they ... read more

Last morning in Koh Tao. Went out for a great early breakfast at a French bakery before I caught my boat to the pier. Felt like such a shame to leave so soon and I could ahve really settled here for a while at least but I feel like I achieved so much in the time I had. I’ve done so many things I’ve always been too afraid to do and I have loved every single day here. It is such a beautiful place to be and I've felt so well and relaxed. Got to Koh Samui very early but it was so much better than I expected as there is a complimentary cafe with wi-fi so I could just read, write and drink grape soda until my flight came in. For some reason I was ... read more

Today I was with the baby early again and he was hardly eating or drinking anything. The milk is going straight through him, he can hardly be absorbing a thing. He was lethargic and much more clingy that usual, pushing to lean against me and hanging his trunk concerningly limply. It was a horror to see. I left feeling considerable drained and deflated. That day during my chores, I was noticeably sleep deprived, mixing up the names for fruit and struggling to form whole sentences. I’d definitely left my heart and mind back with the baby. The vets came to see him today and have decided that he is able to have more independence now he is more settled emotionally and that their primary concern in the number of people coming in and out. Therefore, all ... read more

Today with baby I felt like I was doing better. I’ve been told I have a natural maternal instinct and I think it’s probably one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. It’s the care I give that I take the most pride in at home, it’s just so important. I really felt like I could tell more about what he was feeling; laying down with him you could hear his breathing change when he woke up afraid and calming him down like a baby, back to sleep, was such a privilege. Having been allowed in, it’s so important to pull your weight and be an asset, not a hindrance. He remains very unwell and weak but he is still so playful. He nestles between your legs and wraps his trunk around you legs, you can ... read more
