In case you are interested in visiting Koh Phangan below is an idea of costs when we travelled in 2012. COSTS OF TRAVELLING IN KOH PHANGAN Thailand is very cheap to travel, it may cost a lot in airfares but once you are here you can holiday on a very small budget. We are flash packers and for accommodation, local transport, food, drink and supplies we holiday very well on 2700B per day (NZ$110). It can be done cheaper especially if you don’t drink the wine and cocktails! Visa: Tourist visa on entry to Thailand is free but is for only one month. You can do a close border crossing by bus cheaply but you only get a 2 week extension. We did our visa runs to Malaysia but they were expensive, adding transport to and ... read more

This will probably be one of my last entries until the next trip. With just a few days left, I am back in Bangkok awaiting my flight home. Rather than move around too much, I went south to Kho Pha-Ngan and stayed put for the last few weeks. Quite literally really. The journey down was the usual for travelling in Asia. I was supposed to be picked up at six, which turned out to be half seven. A bus journey that lasted until five the following morning with a single stop. Followed by three hours of waiting for another bus for an hours journey to the ferry. A couple of hours on the ferry, and then finally a songthaew to the resort I was staying at in Haad Gruad on the west coast, arriving around two ... read more

We started off the day with our long lie in as planned – gone 9am by the time we woke. We headed for a freshly squeezed orange juice and to book our ferry tickets for tomorrow’s trip over to Ko Tao – the next destination of our hols. We were tempted into sharing a cheese and pineapple toastie for breakfast – a weird but lovely combo! Sarah was ready for a lounge on the beach and a read of her book – unusually for a holiday she had not read more than a few chapters. Tom however insisted that we went out to explore and suggested we hire a moped. Sarah was a little nervous about this idea so suggested a kayak, which Tom thought was too much like hard work so we comprised and agreed ... read more

Arriving in Koh Phan Ngan to our hotel on a beautiful white sandy beach with warm crystal clear weater it felt like we were in paradise. However, venturing into Haad Rin on our moped we discovered why the island is often described as messed up, not least by Alex Garland, author of 'The Beach' which we have both now read. But we embraced the touristy atmosphere and enjoyed the infamous Coral Bungalows Pool Party. Another day of lounging on the lovely sunny beach was followed by the much anticipated Full Moon Party. It lived up to all expectation with several large stages along the 2km stretch of Haad Rin beach, with every bar playing louder and louder music and thousands of people dancing on the sand. The fire performers and the neon paint everywhere made for ... read more

So we arrived here after a long and tiring journey, but we are eventually in Koh Phangnan. We were shown immediately to our bungalow, which although basic is lovely and just what we hoped for. It’s literally steps away from the beach and has a hammock on the balcony. We love it. We were hungry after our journey so after settling into our new home, testing out the hammock and having a quick wander on the beach we sought out the restaurant. It is this really cool large open dining area, with a variety of seats ranging from hammocks and cushions to lay on, to long benches and tree top tables, to small tables for two. The menu is HUGE, ranging from western food to Eastern food and everything in between, we were spoilt for choice. ... read more

After the most horrible of ferry rides we were piled into a pick up to get over to the area where we were staying. After a bit of research we had decided to make the trip to the quiet northern point of the island for a bit of a chill out instead of heading for the infamous Hadd Rin, home of the full moon party. So we stayed in Thong Nai Pan Noi, the smallest of a pair of beach resorts. A slightly hairy 30 minute trip was rewarded by the most beautiful and isolated beach yet! We seemed to be staying in the only budget accommodation in a small village of fancy resorts. Although the accommodation was cheap and basic, it was perfect, a little bungalow with a fan and a hammock out the front. ... read more

We want to visit Philippines, Banda Aceh and Burma but that will have for the next trip, it’s the wrong time of the year, they are all in the middle of monsoon with bad weather forecast, so we decide to spend the next six weeks travelling around Koh Phangan beaches. We do a visa run to Malaysia after 2 weeks spending a night in Surat Thani on the mainland before our flight out to KL. It’s not a tourist town, more an entry/exit point to the islands so we spend a night in a spotless hotel room, visit their local market, heave at the sight of their food, so visit KFC and Swensons for dinner. Not much to report over the last six weeks other than our daily concerns became where shall we eat, sleep and ... read more
