So we arrived here after a long and tiring journey, but we are eventually in Koh Phangnan.
We were shown immediately to our bungalow, which although basic is lovely and just what we hoped for. It’s literally steps away from the beach and has a hammock on the balcony. We love it.
We were hungry after our journey so after settling into our new home, testing out the hammock and having a quick wander on the beach we sought out the restaurant. It is this really cool large open dining area, with a variety of seats ranging from hammocks and cushions to lay on, to long benches and tree top tables, to small tables for two. The menu is HUGE, ranging from western food to Eastern food and everything in between, we were spoilt for choice. We were really hungry and craving comfort food so about to order sandwiches, but realised we should opt for Thai food. We tried papaya salad (one of Sarah’s all time fave meals), pad thai and a spicy curry fried rice with lemon grass. The food was gorgeous. Tom wasn’t fussed on the papaya salad, which was no hardship for Sarah as she got
to eat the lot. The rice was really spicy, but gorgeous and it was interesting to see yet another take on the classic pad thai (this was about our 4
th or 5
th pad thai since we arrived!). We also got to meet Lise (one of the owners) who is Canadian and really friendly, and we heard about full moon party antics from the night before from other guests there – so many people seem to have lost belongings and had stories about ‘other peoples’ drug use.
After lunch we had a sunbathe on the beach, which was lovely and quiet and then a dip in the sea. At 5.30pm we went to the aptly named ‘Heaven’ bar for a drink and relax. In the evening we ate at the resort again. We both tried Massaman curries (a Southern Thai curry with heavy Indian influences) and shared pineapple fritters for desert. The food was once again gorgeous. We didn’t think we’d like the pineapple fritters but felt we should try them, but they were lovely. The batter was really thin and contained sesame seeds which was lovely. We then went for an explore of the beach area. To our left
about a 5 minute walk away is a bar called ‘Pirates Bar’ you have to walk over a rickety wooden bridge to get there and once there you feel like you’re in a pirate grotto at a full moon party! It was great. As it was the full moon party last night the Island is pretty quiet tonight as everyone is still recovering! It was nice to pretty much have the bar to ourselves, and we laid out on cushions overlooking the sea.
After this we went for a walk back past our bungalow and to the other end of the beach, we passed a few more resorts and what appeared to be deserted bungalows too. Other than that it was really quiet. We decided to return to our resort and go back to Heaven’s bar for a nightcap. We managed to get a day bed on the beach and lay there listening to the waves and the music from the bar whilst sipping on Chang (local beer) – heaven indeed!
We are now back in our bungalow which is pretty warm without the mod cons of aircon! But we love it. Tomorrow we are going to go
exploring the island and snorkelling, but more than anything we are looking forward to not having to set our alarms (although now we’ll probably wake up early anyway!!)
