Sarah & Tom

Despite lots of worldwide travel separately we have never been on a long holiday together! Yes at last we are off on our first proper holiday together after almost 4 years of UK weekend breaks, short city breaks and camping holidays, we are off to Thailand.
As anyone who knows us already knows Sarah has been planning this and planning it some more so Tom came up with the idea of documenting it all so others could follow our trip and we'll have a fabulous memento to look back on and remember our travels.

Just a short blog for now. After an amazing nights sleep we headed off to the exec lounge for breakfast, where Tom proceeded to eat about 5 persons worth of food! The breakfast was amazing, absolutely everything and anything you could possibly want and more. We then returned to the room, but it was in the middle of being cleaned so we ‘had’ to go back to the lounge for a free diet coke!! We discussed what to do with our day, we had originally planned to spend it by the pool, so went down for an explore. Although the roof top pool was totally amazing (so many different types of loungers, some with air con units above!) and had stunning views we decided we still wanted to do some exploring. We decided to go to ... read more

Although we said we were annoyed the train attendant who woke us before we reached Bangkok it was actually really interesting to watch out of the window on the last hour of the journey, we saw so many night markets and basically watched the outskirts of the city begin to wake up. After arriving back in the City of Angels we managed to brush off the rip off taxi people and get a taxi driver who would use his meter to take us to the Hilton. We were feeling pretty pleased with ourselves! Although he managed to get lost, he did finally get us there and for a lot cheaper than the others wanted, we gave him a ‘big’ (relative to the amount he charged) tip to say thanks for being honest and he seemed super ... read more

So this is our last blog before returning to Bangkok as started writing it before leaving Ko Tao - we’re both really sad to be heading towards the last leg of our trip, and are in reflective moods. So far we’ve had the most amazing time in Thailand. This is also the first blog from Bangkok as we finished it after we arrived. Today/yesterday has been a total mix. We woke super early and were on the beach for 7am – the only people there which was amazing. We then did over an hour’s snorkelling, trying to hunt out some sharks and turtles. We were the only people in the sea (and still on the beach actually) and it was amazing. We saw so much marine life, even more than previously as the fish seemed to ... read more

Sarah awoke with a bad back, thanks to Tom kneeing her in the back really hard in his sleep, when she started to cry he shouted at her and went back to sleep. Despite this we started off the day early as we were meeting for diving at 7.45am, so we had a fresh orange juice before heading off. We were told it looked like a storm was coming in, but it would probably blow over as we were on such a small Island. After navigating a small boat and then on to the main dive boat our first destination was Shark Island. Tom was going to snorkel, (he is not yet PADI qualified so unfortunately could not dive, and as the site was for advanced divers only he could not do another try dive), but ... read more

The morning did not start as planned, Tom did not wake up to go for an early snorkel (he’d struggled to sleep due to the heat) and Sarah was beginning to feel a little claustrophobic by the isolation of where we are staying, we had not realised quite how isolated the bay was, you are literally trapped here unless you pay a small fortune for a 4x4 to collect you or get a boat to transport you. The weather was cloudier too and lunch was also disappointing, greasy and a bit Western really – not very authentically Thai. However we then went diving. Tom did a discover scuba diving lesson (video, pool skills and his first open water dive) and Sarah did a scuba review and a sea dive. The dive was ‘only’ in the bay ... read more

We started our day by going to the restaurant for a drink and to sit in some shade to write yesterday’s blog (we were too drunk last night). Sarah sought out another hammock to sit in and attempted to write the blog from there. Lise (the owner) came over after a bit and we told her our news and talked about weddings. She told us about the wedding they had at Seaflower earlier in the year and it sounded amazing. After writing the blog we were hungry and decided to eat something in the restaurant, we went for sandwiches as it was a weird time of day (too late for breakfast and too early for lunch really), the sandwiches were amazing and confirmed to us what a fab place Seaflower is. We talked about returning soon. ... read more

We started off the day with our long lie in as planned – gone 9am by the time we woke. We headed for a freshly squeezed orange juice and to book our ferry tickets for tomorrow’s trip over to Ko Tao – the next destination of our hols. We were tempted into sharing a cheese and pineapple toastie for breakfast – a weird but lovely combo! Sarah was ready for a lounge on the beach and a read of her book – unusually for a holiday she had not read more than a few chapters. Tom however insisted that we went out to explore and suggested we hire a moped. Sarah was a little nervous about this idea so suggested a kayak, which Tom thought was too much like hard work so we comprised and agreed ... read more

So we arrived here after a long and tiring journey, but we are eventually in Koh Phangnan. We were shown immediately to our bungalow, which although basic is lovely and just what we hoped for. It’s literally steps away from the beach and has a hammock on the balcony. We love it. We were hungry after our journey so after settling into our new home, testing out the hammock and having a quick wander on the beach we sought out the restaurant. It is this really cool large open dining area, with a variety of seats ranging from hammocks and cushions to lay on, to long benches and tree top tables, to small tables for two. The menu is HUGE, ranging from western food to Eastern food and everything in between, we were spoilt for choice. ... read more

So we left our last blog with us eating noodles outside the train station. We made our way over to the train station and once inside bought some snacks and drinks for the train, including diet coke which is actually really hard to get as there is coke zero everywhere which people keep telling us is the same – but as you can imagine Sarah does not agree with this!! Thai people seem to think she is a bit mad! We then boarded our train, before being able to get on there were lots of people washing down the outside of the train, so we wrongly assumed it would be just as clean inside! Our first challenge was actually getting to our first class booth, the corridors and doors were very narrow, not built for western ... read more

We started off our day by oversleeping, we didn’t wake until 8.30am, when we had planned to be in the market at that time! And then we only woke as the cleaner turned on the hoover outside our bedroom door (we think she wanted us out to be able to clean!). After packing up and moaning that we’d packed too much stuff we headed off for breakfast. We enjoyed an odd mix for breakfast, combining Western and Eastern foods. After breakfast we headed out to Chatuchuk market, one of the largest markets in the world. We were expecting the skytrain to be quiet as it’s a weekend, how wrong we were. If you thought London underground gets busy in rush hour, this is nothing compared to a Bangkok Skytrain on market day! Thai people seem to ... read more
