Nǐ hǎo! Hello from Taiwan I still love Thailand and visiting my friends there and I have been very fortunate to have made some more good friends in Taiwan and feel very comfortable there. The national parks are magnificent and there is much to see and do every day. If only I could speak Mandarin :) The photos tell the story of this holiday - new friends and new places to see - I climbed a mountain, saw some great waterfalls and soaked my feet in the hot water river and springs. This is the good life :) There are 70 photos. Click on each photo for a larger view.... read more

North of Taipei, accessible by MRT, are the areas of Guandu and Danshui. Guandu is famous for its (very old) temple and its (very new) nature reserve. The nature reserve is interesting but the area accessible to the general public can be walked around in 45 minutes: much of it, including its wetlands, is off-limits to anyone other than the conservationists. The temple is beautiful, built into the side of a mountain so from the upper balconies you can look over the temple roofs one way and the river and rural Taipei county on the other. Guandu and Danshui are connected by a riverside bike path, and it was dusk by the time I arrived there, so I only had time to walk the main street before the sun went down. Danshui has the vibe of ... read more

The historic seaside town of Tamsui, located northwest of Taipei, has been on my list of places to visit ever since I came to Taiwan. Technically a district of the mega-city of New Taipei, Tamsui (also known as Danshui) is easily reached by metro, being the northern terminal station on the red line. Its long and storied history saw several European nations fight for hegemony in the Taiwan Strait and as a result, Tamsui was occupied various times. First the Spanish arrived in 1628, establishing the town and mission of Santo Domingo to secure their interests in the Philippines against the Dutch, the British and the Portuguese. Fort San Domingo was built by the Spanish in the same year as a military, political, trade and missionary base. In 1642, the Dutch expelled the Spanish, took over ... read more

Monday, 20th August 2012 I loved to see the sunset over Danshui River again. That's why we decided to time our visit in the late afternoon on our final day hoping that it will provide a sweet ending for our trip in Taipei. Danshui Old Streets never failed to fascinate us even though the shops had remained more or less the same over the years. It was crowded even on a weekday afternoon. I liked that there were many street snacks vendors around where I could find my favourite fried mushrooms and papaya milk. Also, this was the best place to stock up on the fish crackers and try the town's specialty, Ah Gei. Just behind the old streets was the Gold Coast of Danshui. It provided a vantage point to catch a glimpse of the ... read more

Queue the Who! (CSI Miami reference) Alright, so in my attempt to play catch up with my blogs, I’m going to cover my three trips to the beach I made so far (not counting my time at GaoXiong, which will be a totally separate blog). So pitch the super umbrellas and lay out the towels, it’s time to catch some rays of light (see what I did there? That can mean the sun and enlightening knowledge! Awww yeah). Sept 10th: So being new to Taiwan and the coast, Ben, next door neighbor Cuauhtémoc Reale (I’m not going to lie, I still can’t pronounce his name, so I’m calling him by his last name from here on out. And if you’re curious, he’s half Mexican and half Canadian – which if you average the two makes him ... read more

Zajtrk je bil kar ze brunch, in sicer pri drugem kaficu za vogalom, tokrat luo bo kao z jajcem in tistim njihovim super cajem. Potem pa v Beitou! Gre za postajo nedalec stran in zelo znano lokacijo toplic oz. hot springs! tajvan je namrec nabasan s temi hot springi, in ce kdo, potem sem jaz veliki ljubitelj teh zadevscin, tudi v soncnem vremenu in kaksnih plus 25 stopinjah. Ampak najprej besedica o busih tu.

I headed out for Spring Festival vacation on January 7th. My Chinese New Year vacation was 45 days long and I planned to go to Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. The first stop was Taiwan. I met an interesting Canadian from Vancouver in the Nanjing Airport before we took off to Taipei. He sells racquet sports equipment, but mostly badminton equipment, all over the world. A good portion of his market happens to be Asian consumers and a lot of his factories are just outside of Nanjing. When our plane touched down in Taipei, he and his friend gave me a lift into town. He was a really nice guy. We talked about Badminton, the outdoors, Chinese economics and development, and the Cascades. After wandering around some alleyways trying to find the Chocolate Box ... read more

The food, oh the food! The food is quite worth mentioning, because it's nothing like I've ever experienced elsewhere. Meats and vegetables are fresher than I have ever seen. The tastes are amazing, and utilized in ways I have never thought of, and has awoken taste-buds I didn't know exists. There are more vegetables to choose from here than I've ever seen in an American grocery store, and it looks like it was JUST PICKED five minutes ago, and is there right in front of you. Even the chickens are killed right there, and they put them in water to drain the blood, and then put them out on the counter. It is divine. (My apologies to the vegetarians) Oh ya, and I ate a chicken foot. It is supposed to be full of collagen, hence ... read more

Ok so a lot has happened since I last wrote anything on this site. Melissa has finally arrived and we've moved to a bigger apartment. We've also eaten some fantastic food and explored some really cool parts of the city. First, the apartment. Basically I had initially agreed to rent the studio from Martin for a month. A couple of days before I arrived however he emailed me to let me know that his sister-in-law had in fact just let it out so I could only have it for ten days. Not wanting to leave me in the lurch he has let us take a 3 bedroom apartment for the remainder of the month contract for the same price. So after two more nights in the studio we drag our ridiculously heavy bags around the ... read more

At some point around midnight or so I made it to LAX. I was feeling a little rushed, but not as much as when I left FL. Passed a bunch of airlines... still wondering if Malaysian truly exists... and there they are down the third row. Now I just have to hope that a series of events occurs that results in me boarding this plane. OK, my ticket is confirmed, it's looking pretty good until they say that having a one-way ticket is no good and i have to buy my onward ticket now. No problem, I'll go to Hong Kong... but for some reason I have to go to another airline to buy that ticket. Over at Cathay, they kinda take forever, but the ticket costs what I expect. Hey this should be simple; I ... read more
