So, I’ve just spent 5 weeks volunteering at a turtle conservation project… Top turtle info 5 types of turtles in Sri Lanka, 6 in the world, but only 3 types at the sanctuary: 1. Green - so called because their fat makes a green turtle soup (Boooooo!) 2. Olive Ridley - er, because they love olives and riddles 3. Hawksbill - due to the resemblance of their beak to the birds. These are on the verge of extinction as their shell is sought after by those pesky humans to decorate their mantelpieces. So whadda do we do? - buy eggs from fisherman (6 pence each) so they aren’t sold in markets as food - bury the eggs 50cms in the hatchery sand - dig up the babies after 50-60 days. Anything from 0-80% hatch. - release ... read more

Craving for real camping by a waterfall - Try Aberdeen 3 of us got our back pack ready with extra 3 crew tent and got in to Colombo - Hatton public bus. Just 150 rupees per person we got down from the Ginigathhena town. We loitered around the town to grab some amenities including kerosoin oil and some wood available at the local market. With all things ready we got in to a Tuk Tuk and asked him to drop us at the path entrance to Aberdeen village. Guy drop us for just 350 rupees. We start climbing down the staircase that lead to the village and took a left turn to the jungle path. Some common dogs guided us the way but not the leaches. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leech) however through the jungle path we crossed a small ... read more

Sri-Lanka was a fun trip for us, even though it was short and sweet. We stayed in Beruwala. It is 2.5 hour drive from the city. We rented an apartment facing the beach side, which for us was a very simple paradise and not much to do but chill, hang out in the beach with cold beers, check out the turtle nesting ground and have curry for lunch and dinner. I wish we could have stayed longer with our friends, but there is always next time and this trip has given me more reasons to come back and explore Sri-Lanka. ... read more

Kandy Landed in Colombo with my favourite sister (Vic - she paid me lots to say this!) and straightaway escaped to the cooler hill country and it’s arty centre. Hit: - the botanical gardens where Cathy got hit on by a few frustrated Buddhists - an elephant sanctuary where I wet myself laughing - the local theatre production of the various national dances - the spice markets (the largest exporter of cinnamon in the world) - the tea plantations. There's sooo much tea here that it smells like you’re sleeping in a tea bush all over the hill country! Adam’s Peak 2am start to hit the peak for sunrise. Felt a little overprepared with my North Face kit after watching +80 year old women climb it barefoot with little clothing. Tis a pilgrimage for Buddishts to ... read more

Sri Lankaaaaaa! Sri Lanka started off very well! We got upgraded to business class on the the flight down! We stayed in a hotel in central Colombo for the first two nights. Sri Lankan cuisine is similar to Indian, but the give a lot more food, about 5 separate dishes to eat in the main course! The Sri Lankan people are very friendly, always wanted to say hello. But they don't seem to understand what emigration is. When we said that we were from England, they kept on saying that you look Indian though! There is a heavy militray presence in Sri Lanka, quite unsettling at first as there are a lot of road blockades, but they are friendly enough. Colombo's nightlife is very odd - all the bars around town are brothels.....! So we ended ... read more

bSo we have been in Sri Lanka, Kosgoda, for over a week now/b -- and you could say we are getting used to it. But that can't include the heat. When we left the airport in Colombo last Sunday it hit us like a brick wall... But, nevermind, we're used to it now. And loving every second. To be honest, if the heat is the biggest issue... i think we're pretty set. We are staying in a homestay in Kosgoda, nr. Bentota, on the South-west coast of the Island. Its a relatively deserted, rural area... meaning that the benormous gorgeous beach/b is pretty much to ourselves... plus a couple of random beach locals... who always seem to think we care that they don't have a wife, and that they like England. We were brought to the ... read more

In Colombo now and off to find our first Sri Lanka-couchsurfer Got a mobile phone number with Dialog, which I'd heard was supposed to be the best, and also turned out to be the most popular, if you count the number of Dialog shops available - it only cost 110 rupees (100 for the card, 10 for two passport copies), but it wouldn't be activated until the next day. I also bought 200 rupees worth of talking time, and that easily lasted the whole trip. Definitely worth buying! So good to have. But for that moment, the card still wasn't activated, so we had to use a phone box to call Yashasvin, our new host. That was rather cheap too, the call cost about 15 rupees. We had to take two buses, the 103 to Borella, ... read more
