Hello, I am currently on a gap year between university and work. From 27th February 2010, we will be travelling from Mumbai, through India, then on to Sri Lanka. From there we will be flying to Singapore, and then trekking north up to Bangkok, where we will also be going through Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

I'm glad to say that the itinerary was completed very successfully and I had an amazing time visiting these countries. I hope that you've enjoyed reading my blog, as much as I have writing them!

Who ever's idea it was to go down a river in a rubber ring, get fished out to a bar, get free drinks, go on a zip line and down a slide into the river is a genius - this was Laos, and it is called Tubing!. Absolutley crazy! The trip to Laos though was a nightmare, 22 hour long bus ride....! Could've been quicker if it the border opened 24 hours, and the Vietnamese border officials showed a bit of urgency. Anyway, we eventually got to the capital of Vientiane about 4pm. There wasn't much to do there, so we just booked tickets to Vang Vieng - for the Tubing. That place is surreal! The restaurants/bars have tables where you can lie down, and they put one of Family Guy, Friends or The Simpsons box ... read more

Vietnam had its ups and downs. Its ups were when I realised that you never forget how to ride a bicycle, the downs were when a "Laundry' service was spraying my clothes with febreeze, then trying to over charge me for it. Anyway, Vietnam started with the Ho Chi Minh City - the city of motorbikes. There are so many, its so dangerous to cross the road - so I just followed a local, and they showed the way. In Ho Chi Minh, we did an excursion to the Cu Chi tunnels, which were the trenches the Vietnamese built during the war, that and the war museum were very much propaganda, i.e the Vietnamese did no wrong during the war, and all thg problems were that of the Americans. At Ho Chi Minh, we bought an ... read more

Cambodia was amazing! It was the best place which I've been to so far, because of the people and the sights which I saw. It started off very strangely though, as the bus from Bangkok airport dropped us off 200 meters from the border. Then we had to go through three separate immigration offices; one was quarantine, the next was to buy the visa, then the final one was to stamp the visa. Then we got a bus, to another bus stop, where we had to either get on a bus to Siem Reap, or pay $3 more and get a taxi, so we got a taxi. The taxi driver decided to stop on the way to wash his car though! First stop in Cambodia was Siem Reap, as it is close to the Angkor Wat ... read more

When we crossed the Malaysia-Thailand border, we realised that we were rushed for time as they only gave us a 14 day Visa. This was a good thing in a way as we knew we only had 5 weeks to fit in 4 more countries. Our first stop in Thailand was Phuket - which is a very package holiday resort. The each was golden, the skies were blue and the sun was beaming, a great way to spend a week or so. But we got a bid fed up with the ''Costa - del - sol"of Thailand. We stayed in Phuket for 3 days where we spent much of the time on the beach, and the evenings at one of numerous bars - trying to avoid the Ladyboys! So we then took a trip to Ko ... read more

The Majority of our time in Malaysia was spent watching the Formula 1 GP! Our initial tickets were not that good so we upgraded them for another 20 pounds (even though the ticket office staff there were useless - surprise, suprise!). the view was fantastic as we could see multiple corners and a bit of straight too. After the first few laps when all the cars of bunched together, there are then always cars coming round, the sound is defening! It was a fantastic experience, the atmosphere around the track was very good too, as there were people from all nationalities there! The hotel we stayed at in KL was next to a very vibrant area. It was very busy during the day and was always buzzing. We were next to the Times Square building which ... read more

We only stayed three nights in Singapore. It is a place where I could live! It is very a very cosmopolitan and vibrant place. First impressions were fantastic as we booked the hotel at the airport, then we got the tube there, which was only half an hour. It is very clean and efficient! Our hotel was very nice and centrally located. We just ate and went to one bar the first night as we landed at around 10pm. The next day we got a day pass on the tube and went around most of south singapore. We went to china town, the business district and the marina harbour. We spent the night in the Clarke Quay area, which is full of a lot of bars - very expensive in Sinagapore though, some places was nine ... read more

Sri Lankaaaaaa! Sri Lanka started off very well! We got upgraded to business class on the the flight down! We stayed in a hotel in central Colombo for the first two nights. Sri Lankan cuisine is similar to Indian, but the give a lot more food, about 5 separate dishes to eat in the main course! The Sri Lankan people are very friendly, always wanted to say hello. But they don't seem to understand what emigration is. When we said that we were from England, they kept on saying that you look Indian though! There is a heavy militray presence in Sri Lanka, quite unsettling at first as there are a lot of road blockades, but they are friendly enough. Colombo's nightlife is very odd - all the bars around town are brothels.....! So we ended ... read more

Hello, The end of our stay in India was fantastic, capped by going to the IPL. After our stay in Kerala, we went to the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, in Kumily. We were meant to be able to see a lot of wild animals in their natural habitat - but we just saw monkeys again! They didn't attack me this time, but they were attacking each other! We went on a boat around the lake, but didn't see much. We also walked around the forest, by day and by night. It was really peaceful and relaxing. The time in Kumily was finished by watching some magnificent Keralan marshall arts - and they were doing some pretty dangerous stuff. After Kumily we took another horror bus to Trivandrum, another bus driver who was adament on speeding round corners ... read more

WE arrived at Kerala on Friday morning. We were in North Kerala, Kannur. The hotel we stayed at had magnificent ocean views, and an amazing beach. There are not many tourisrts there, but in a few years there will be a lot because a lot of the beaches there are unspoilt. As there was not much to do there, we took a non ac train during the middle of the day to Cochin! All the AC had sold out. WE Stayed in the Ernakulam region of Cochin. This was very busy and western, like Mangalore was. The first night here we found a bar to go to, and we watched the IPL. Second day was very good as we venured across the boat jetty to Fort Cochin. But we first go off on the wrong Island! ... read more

Hello After Goa, we went to Mangalore, why you ask? Because it has a funny name, and sounds like Bangalore! WE arrived at mangalore at 5am, had no where to stay, so we asked a taxi man for a decent hotel! Luckily he got us to a cheap and clean one. When we got up, we realised that mangalore, even though it hasn't got much to do there, it is a becoming a western city - we ate in Pizza Hut! Once finding out that there was not much to do, we decided to go to Madikeri for some mounting trekking. So the same day we left Magalore at 7, and arrived at Madikeri at 3. Unfortunately this time there was no taxi man, so we had to stumble across a guest house! That morning though ... read more
