Yes true, NY Times I think rated it so in January.

Sri Lanka is cheap too...but you get what you pay for. Big hotels are great, but try the boutique hotels - Google "Boutique hotels in Sri Lanka". Book hotels in advance, the good ones could be fully occupied if not. Tickets for train and bus can be had at any time. Day time train ride from Colombo to Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is an adventure. You may want to visit Kandy, Anuradhapura (central region). Hikkaduwa, Galle (southern region). Spa treatments at hotels are supposed to be great.

When you get to the airport book your taxi inside, outside taxi drivers could be shady. Most locals know some English.

Tourists are safe, was so even during the war. However use common sense, talk to folks at the hotel, avoid touts. Clothes are cheap, however if you are a plus size then may be a bit problematic finding right sizes. Take mossey spray. Hope you have a good time. Reply to this

Yes.. the war is finally over.. No more things exploding... I think that’s a great thing for a tiny country to have achieved... Now we Sri Lankans look ahead to developing our industries and our tourism sector. Sri Lanka was a great destination before the war and the travel bans during the war hit our tourism industry really bad.. On top of that came the Tsunami that wiped out or seriously damaged hotel beach property. BUT Sri Lankans are resilient people and have managed to stay afloat through the worst of times.. I dunno what it is but somehow we seem to take the hits and keep walking forward. The Hotels have started gearing up once again for the winter season where many will want to come down from cold Europe. We are expecting twice the amount of visitors this time around and the prices of hotels are going up.

Please reserve your hotel booking NOW because come December, you will not be able to get any rooms in hotels which will be fully booked. That goes for Airline bookings and transport. Think and plan ahead.. and secure your holiday soon. Wish you happy holidays!!

Hi,

It was also rated a place to go in 2010, hence we went there in November last year. My favourite place so far- has absolutely everything to offer. Beautiful beaches, wildlife, plenty of culure, amazing food - we loved to pieces;-)

Enjoy,

I went there 20 years ago and again last month, obviously there are more tourists now but I still found it amazing - very helpful people, diverse, beautiful, good value. Wildlife, beach, culture...Possibly the perfect holiday. The only down side is that travel is slow so you need time to see everything.
I have written a couple of blogs with photos that will give you a bit of an insight.

Hello,

I have been in Hikkadua recently and slept in a really nice place.

It is a house of a former 5 star hotel cook.

His name is Nimal, we did some Srilankan cooking lessons, side seeing, beach time, etc...

Nimal was so great that I decided to help him and did a website introducing his place on internet.

Sri Lanka is an amazing place, I will never forget it !!

Hello,
Yes Sri Lanka is one of the best countries to visit for a holiday, it has one of the best beaches and lots to see with the heritage of the country. We vested sri lanka few months ago and it superb holiday during the stay of two weeks we spend some time in the beach resort enjoying the beach in bentota and the rest of the time traveling around Sri Lanka.
In the tour we visited sigiriya, dambulla, kandy, nuwara eliya, bandarawela, katharagama, yala, galle
We travel in a privet vehicle arranged by my vacation travels and also the hotel reservation was done by them, we were offed a tour package from them and I think it was very good with what they had offered for the price, also we got a free satay of two days to cover Colombo city and do some shopping.
You can contact my vacation travels on shashika@ myvacationtravels.com and visit their web site at http://myvacationtravels.com

Marco Polo apparently said that Sri Lanka is the most beautiful island in the world. It certainly rates up with the best anyway! Reply to this

I agree with you, OO2. Sri Lanka (with eight UNESCO heritage sites) can be described as the jewel of the Indian Ocean still being discovered.

It has incredible temples, safari tours, national parks, tea plantations and world renowned beaches, Sri Lanka really does have everything. Spend some time in the hustle of the capital Colombo, investigate the old fort city of Galle which has been rejuvenated following the tragedy of the tsunami, climb into the heart of the Island in Kandy and immerse into a different world in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. A country you will want to come back to over and over! Reply to this
