Kandy
Landed in Colombo with my favourite sister (Vic - she paid me lots to say this!) and straightaway escaped to the cooler hill country and it’s arty centre.
Hit:
- the botanical gardens where Cathy got hit on by a few frustrated Buddhists
- an elephant sanctuary where I wet myself laughing
- the local theatre production of the various national dances
- the spice markets (the largest exporter of cinnamon in the world)
- the tea plantations. There's sooo much tea here that it smells like you’re sleeping in a tea bush all over the hill country!
Adam’s Peak
2am start to hit the peak for sunrise. Felt a little overprepared with my North Face kit after watching +80 year old women climb it barefoot with little clothing.
Tis a pilgrimage for Buddishts to see the imprint of Buddha's foot at the top. He wears a size 742 (European) although he has quite a narrow bridge.
Ella
The local boys took a shine to Cath on the train.
Amazing views from the taxi we needed to catch due to it being a Poya (full moon) day when
Nice Elephants Serendade Welshgirls
A charming 18 year old young man takes Cath for a stroll. the country shuts down. I’m going back for a hike or two.
Unawatuna
Decent beach but very quiet as end-of-season
Galle
An ol’ skool town protected by the walls of an historic dutch fort.
T’was far too hot to see it all. Had a great club sandwich tho and ice cold cola tho.
Induruwa
Went to see the turtles! Unfortunately didn’t see any Mummy turtles laying eggs at night ☹
Negombo
Sri Lanka’s miniature version of Benidorm / Cancun / Bali. It may be close to the airport but it’s horrendous.
Other news
In other news, I’m hopefully picking up my Jaffna permit today after being refused entry at a military checkpoint followed by a week of waiting, by a beach, for the MOD to open after Buddhist new year.
Random stat attack
Number of bites I received this fortnight = ZERO, NIL, NADA ☺
Number of bites Sister Bliss received = HUNDREDS ☹ but ☺ (well, you know what I mean!)
I killed 7 mossies this month = happy days
Number of meals that blow

Did you know…?
The word ‘serendipity’ meaning
the ability of making accidental but fortuitous discoveries is derived from Serendip, the Persian name for Sri Lanka.
Found this out whilst flicking through a local magazine.
