Hello Jude
Thank you for your comments. I am to stay with a local family and work around the Kurunegala area. I do not have much time to do other things apart from the weekend. Many thanks for your offer. I am pleased to hear your opinion of the Leo Project Foundation and I will be safe.

I would like to ask how to go from Negombo/Colombo/Int'l Airport to the Cultural Triangle (Dambulla - Anuradhapura - Polonnaruwa)? Can I go by plane, train or bus? I want to make a quick tour to this area for 3 days. I also contacted a travel agent for getting a quotation in case I arrange a package tour. Thank you for any tip.

This is great that you are helping the weary travelers. I will be traveling from Columbo to Badulla by train, can you give me any suggestions for my travels. We will be arriving mid April. Can you suggest reasonable bungalows in Columbo close to train and a place in Badulla.
Thanks for that! Reply to this

Hi Fedele,

This is great what you do;-) Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if you or anybody could advise me on best way to travel around Sri Lanka. We only have 11 days and obviously so many great places to see but at the moment I am struggling with a choice of a car rental or a driver?? I spent some time in India and I was wondering if it would be similar in a way that you reach a place and then get a taxi or a car to the next place?? Would that work or I really have to rent car/driver??Any help appreciated;-)

I cant wait - it will be fab;-)

Beata and Tomek,

Rental car with a driver is the way to go in Sri Lanka. Navigating the roads by yourself will be tricky, but you can try it if you like that sort of adventure. Contact the Sri Lanka Tourist Board (key word on Google), or walk into one of many five-star hotels (you do not have to be a guest) and they will give you a list of reputable car rental agencies. Eitherway, negotiate a base price before you set out - calculated usually by mile.

If you decide to get a driver, factor in a small daily tip, usually about five to ten US Dollars a day - a happy driver will take you the "extra mile". Also, inform the driver that you expect him/her to drive at a safe speed - no heroics required.

Cheers!

Thanks Oceanboy ;-) does it mean that taxi is not doable??
Do all guest houses provide place and food for drivers??

cheers,

Taxi is doable, but may turn out to be more expensive. Besides, if you visit remote areas, getting a taxi may be tricky, specially at night. For short runs (10 miles or less) try a tuk-tuk (scooter taxi) - however be prepared to "hold on to your shorts" as it could be a wild ride of sorts, but it could be fun as well. Negotiate fare before you get going.

Not all guest houses provide for drivers. You may want to check before you set out. The tourist board (on Galle Road, Colombo, and online) should have a list of approved guest houses - the list could be a starting point until you get settled in.
