The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south. To be updated

After a month of theoretical studies and field work, however interesting it might have been, it was wonderful to start the actual holiday part of the trip. When I left Finland I didn't have any plans about where or with whom I was going to travel for the last two weeks in the Philippines. But luckily enough I met some fabulous people on the course with whom we decided to travel together! Our first stop was the island of Palawan, which lies in the western parts of the country quite isolated from everything else. We quickly visited the capital of Puerto [View Full Entry]

Taal Lake Asia » Philippines » Batangas » Taal
Taal Lake is a freshwater lake in the province of Batangas, on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The lake is situated within a caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. It is the country's third largest lake (the largest being Laguna de Bay). The active Taal Volcano, which is the one responsible for the lake's sulfuric content, lies on an island in the center of the lake, called Volcano Island. The island is called pulo or islet by the locals. In addition, there is a crater lake on Volcano Island, which is in Lake Taal, which [View Full Entry]

Got a chance to attend the “Wedding Ceremony” of Ariel & Jeremie, both of them are my good friends in the United Arab Emirates. The venue is at the Beautiful place of Munting Resort sa Talangan, Batangas, Philippines. It is my first time to visit this place. Thanks to Grace, her Dad & Mom for picking me up @ Ortigas Avenue. We reached the place a day before the occasion… the surrounding is so amazing and we decided to have a swimming after the lunch. Adding to the excitement then was the sunny weather & we hope to have the same [View Full Entry]

It's another long weekend. And many have planned for this long weekend. Just slightly more than an hour's plane ride from Manila and Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao welcomed us. There is work to do, and more.... Cagayan de Oro in Northern Mindanao, but in the southern part of the Philippines Cagayan de Oro looks and smells like another metropolis but there is a provincial touch to the place as people from hotel staff to vendors to the taxi driver seem to have enough time for everyone. There is no rush about how things are done . Perhaps people are [View Full Entry]

This does not pretend to be a travel blog. But I feel compelled to write about this. Some of you may have visited Manila this August 2009, and may have wondered about the recent events. This is our story. Today marks the 26th death anniversary of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. , whom many believed to be the only man who could have beaten the country's dictator for 20 years, Ferdinand Marcos. Ninoy was a man of peace. When Marcos declared Martial law, this President's most vocal and most popular opponent was Ninoy Aquino, who was promptly sent to jail for 7 [View Full Entry]

Remembering Ninoy and Cory
They Waited.........
It Rained, but the People Stayed

After my around the world trip in 2008 I felt that I've done enough sightseeing and travelling around just for fun for a while. Instead of being just a bystander and a spectator I felt that during my next travel I would like to somehow be a part of the local life, learn something new and actually maybe be to some use. So when I heard about the Global Health course I immediately applied and luckily enough I got accepted. The first two weeks in the Philippines has gone by in a mere blink of an eye. The Global Health course [View Full Entry]

Lonely Planet Souvenir Shop on Boracay's white beach Lonely Planet has a very nice store on the main white beach. However, their staff is very dull. They are not that interested to sell and behave as if it would be better if there were no customers in the shop. I guess it is like this because they do not own the store unlike most of the other stores on the beach. But the clothes are very nice and worth the money. Very expensive but as I said worth it.
