The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south. To be updated

Ateneo de Manila Asia » Philippines » Manila
The trip got of to a bad start on Monday morning as I couldn’t for the life of me find the gadget for accessing my Internet bank. After all, I had gotten the incredibly clever idea of moving most of my money from the bank account connected to my bank card, and thereby limiting the amounts that skimmers and other miscreants can access. However, without the gadget I would be just as cut off from that money as they are. I turned the apartment upside-down before giving up, and by now I had to call a cab to make sure that [View Full Entry]

Reef Retreat Asia » Philippines » Boracay
It has been a lovely extended weekend for me and a couple of my co-workers, snorkeling, island hopping, skim boarding, drinking cocktails, eating lots of food and simply just enjoying the cold evening breeze by the shore. This was the best time to once again take the much needed break from work. I was actually here almost at the same time last year. We were originally to arrive at Caticlan Airport which would have saved us so much time but the airport was temporary closed and all the flights were re-routed to Kalibo. It was due to an accident that happened [View Full Entry]

A mild Escapade Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Moalboal
I sought refuge from Cebu City on the opposite side of the island in a small coastal village that goes by the name of Moalboal. It was a very sleepy and laid back little place which just so happened to be right up my street after the exploits encountered in Cebu City. The majority of the tourists here being divers, mostly Korean. Diving doesn't really appeal to me so I spent the majority of the time trekking about the area with the odd spot of swimming here and there. Unlike Cebuites the locals here are mostly friendly, greeting you as you [View Full Entry]

While the actual trip that I’ll cover in this diary begun on September 21st, the nature of the trip means that it begun in early spring this year. I’m going to the Philippines to perform field research for my Master’s degree in social anthropology. I will be researching the Reproductive Health Bill, a law that is being pretty heavily lobbied both for and against in the Philippines at the moment. Since I’m doing it with support from the Minor Field Study scholarship from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the trip was approved early this yea [View Full Entry]

Pagsanjan Falls Rapids The whole family was enjoying the rapids from the main stream of Pagsanjan Falls during our visit to the Falls in 2007. Going up the main falls was not easy as it was going upstream but going down was fun as you feel the thrill and the skills of the "boatmen". Enjoy the video!!!! [View Full Entry]

After a month of theoretical studies and field work, however interesting it might have been, it was wonderful to start the actual holiday part of the trip. When I left Finland I didn't have any plans about where or with whom I was going to travel for the last two weeks in the Philippines. But luckily enough I met some fabulous people on the course with whom we decided to travel together! Our first stop was the island of Palawan, which lies in the western parts of the country quite isolated from everything else. We quickly visited the capital of Puerto [View Full Entry]

Taal Lake Asia » Philippines » Batangas » Taal
Taal Lake is a freshwater lake in the province of Batangas, on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The lake is situated within a caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. It is the country's third largest lake (the largest being Laguna de Bay). The active Taal Volcano, which is the one responsible for the lake's sulfuric content, lies on an island in the center of the lake, called Volcano Island. The island is called pulo or islet by the locals. In addition, there is a crater lake on Volcano Island, which is in Lake Taal, which [View Full Entry]
