The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south. To be updated

It's March 2009, LynLyn and I were coming in on the Suplicio Lines boat from Cebu. The night was rough. Crossing from Cebu the wind picked up pretty good and I don't think there was much cargo below. LynLyn was fine, thank God, she had taken here Drammamine about two hours before bed time. Badjao is a tribe in the Philippines that lives in boats. The People of the Sea or Sea-Gypsies. They are here in the port of Iligan. Listen carefully and you'll hear them calling to me because they see my white face ''americano". They're calling in English, "Friend, [View Full Entry]

It's near Mall of Asia but not really, it's near the US Embassy, everyone knows that landmark. It's called Ocean Park. Ronnah and I went there. We had a lot of fun. The fish eat the dead skin off of your feet. At first you want to scream coz it's like an annoying tickle but after a few minutes you start to relax and enjoy the fish spa. Again, this is from earlier this year. I'll be returning in December. Hi Roro! [View Full Entry]

(Day 553 on the road) How to write a blog entry about a place that has such an awful reputation as Angeles City in the Philippines? The place is possibly the sex capital of the world, with between 10.000 and 20.000 prostitutes selling their bodies every night. During the time of the U.S. airbase here, as many as 100.000 working girls were offering their services. I had a morning flight the next day from Clark airport just outside of Angeles, and decided to spend the night here instead of crazy Manila and see this place for myself. I soon realised that [View Full Entry]

Easy Riders... Asia » Philippines » Siquijor

(Day 552 on the road) Here is something I learned during the last year and a half of travelling in Southeast Asia: Whenever somebody claims to give you the "cheapest room in town" or a similar sounding offer, rest assured that there are much better deals to be had. This proved true once again when I shunned the guy who made just such a claim as I was looking for a place to crash in the unremarkable town of Talisay at the edge of Lake Taal. Just ten minutes later I found a much better deal, in terms of price, location [View Full Entry]

Siquijor road trip. Asia » Philippines » Siquijor

Feng Shui Asia » Philippines » Siquijor

Selling Sin Meat, Unstoppable? Joewel V. Saba While majority of Filipinos prayed together as a family, attended Lenten retreats, served the church, extended help to charity and followed the station of the cross or at least kept a Lenten journal for the forgiveness of their sins, prostitution in my country never stopped amidst the observance of atonement. There was no exercise of fasting or abstinence of human lust because of one very common answer- poverty. That is what their justifications are. What abstinence or fasting can be exercised when these poor countrymen of mine a [View Full Entry]
