The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south. To be updated

During June 2009 my family headed to Maasin, Southern Leyte to attend my cousin's wedding. We stayed in a cheap but clean pension house located in Downtown Maasin. Its called Casa Ampil they have just renovated the establishment and I paid 450 for the 2 bedroom but they dont have hot shower. Then we went to have a dinner at Kinamot sa Abgao restaurant, a rustic and filipino inspired restaurant located at teh seaside. Good food and reasonably price. I like the dim-lit dining area and its ventilated by the sea breeze as it is located at the seaside. Perfect for [View Full Entry]

So, today is my last day in Manila before I fly to Boracay. Manila has been my first proper interaction with other toursits and hitting the town. I left Baguio at 10:00 and got here at 16:30, Diego had arranged for a friend of his to meet me at the bus station which seemed like a good idea. When I arrived he had already been waiting about 1.5 hrs. We grabbed a cab and he said he knew and off we went. I didn't realise till we got there but he took me to Quezon City, (Manila seems to be made [View Full Entry]

DAY 1 I always loved the beach. If there's one thing in the world where I want to stay for the rest of my... it would involve somewhere with pure white sand, crashing waves with a hint smell of the salty sea. Having been to some parts of the Philippines (Boracay, Coron Palawan, Cebu and Batangas) and Honolulu, Hawaii, nothing prepared me for El Nido. This paradise situates at the Northern tip of Palawan and is normally 8 hours if via the Sweety and Euleen Joy bus from Puerto Princesa airport. Seven (7) hours via Fort Wally (due to stopover in [View Full Entry]

Bangui, Ilocos Norte Asia » Philippines » Ilocos » Bangui
My Town Bangui is the second to the last town of Ilocos Norte, approximately 65 kms north of Laoag, before the town of Pagudpud. Bangui has been left out of the Tourist map for the last decade due to non promotion of the town and it's sceneries. I am making this blog to start promoting our town and get it back in the tourist map of Ilocos Norte. For people who have not been to Bangui, let me make a quick description or picture of the place. The town is bounded on the northern, eastern and southern part by mountains and [View Full Entry]

On sunday morning I awoke to an e-mail telling me to wake up (thanks Kiran x), and a mild excitment about the next leg of my journey, a flight from Hong Kong to Clark in North Luzon, Philippines. My dad drove me to the airport which I'm glad he did cause I had problems... One of the major aims of my trip was to do as little flying as possible, so i will be attempting a lot of overland travel (although, as little as possible here... you'll see), and I will only have a limited number of flights across the whole [View Full Entry]

They bite at my flesh as I lie in the water. Yellow, red, blue, purple, green, silver, black, brown and white. A symphony of colours. Stripes and dots. Little critters with sharp incisors and large oval ones with huge puffed lips. A magnificent display, a wonderland of sorts. He swims right at my mask. A fish the size of my finger but defiant as he protects his territory. A blow fish magnifies itself to twice its normal size. To my right a purple starfish does whatever starfish do. I have been floating in the Bacuit archipelago for less than fifteen minutes [View Full Entry]

Baltazar Island is one of the so-called Tres Reyes Islands in Marinduque named after the 3 Magi. The sea between Mindoro and Marinduque where the isalnds are located is often choppy. The worst peacetime maritime disaster in the world occured near these islands (Dec. 20, 1987), when the ferry "Dona Paz" carrying more than 4,000 passengers disembarked from Tacloban City to Manila and collided with MT Vector, an oil tanker en route from Bataan to Masbate. "Dona Paz" was situated at Dumali point, east of Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro along Tablas Strait near these small islands. The Vector's c [View Full Entry]

"Keep your sense of proportion by regularly, preferably daily, visiting the natural world." - Catlin Matthews I think our universe is so vast that it is difficult to pin point a single person who has traveled each and every corner of the earth. But what a joy it would bring to discover and do a little time travel not to the future, but back to where different civilizations and cultures emerged from. I want to start with the mystical and ever humble count [View Full Entry]
