The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south. To be updated

General Tips Asia » Philippines
The following are some tips that I learned when traveling to the Philippines: 1. Bring dollars and exchange into pesos at the airport. The best rate to get pesos was 42 peso/dollar in the US. When I arrived in Manila the airport had plenty of foreign exchange offices that were offering 47 pesos / dollar. 2. BEWARE of Taxi cab drivers - many are trying to overcharge. In Manila, to get from the international airport to the domestic airport you need to take a cab. It should cost no more than $3 for a white metered cab and maybe $5 for [View Full Entry]

Sabang is an easy destination from Puerto Princesa. One could take a bus from San Jose station near Puerto Princesa or can book an underground river tour from Puerto Princesa, do the tour which takes about 2 hours, and then check into the hotel (this is what I did). The undergroung river tour is interesting, the most exciting part for me was getting there by boat which can be pretty exciting. Staying 3 days is about minimum. I met a guy who was going to stay 3 days and he's been there for 3 weeks. The big draw of Sabang is [View Full Entry]

El Nido is an 8 hour bus ride from Puerto Princesa or 6 boat ride from Sabang which is how I got there. This is a must see if you are in Palawan. While in El Nido you must do the following 1. Go on an island tour - Tour A, Tour C 2. Rent a kayak from Art Cafe: Start at 8AM for 1/2 day. You will have too much fun and end up paying for a full day but you'll get your money's worth. 3. Rent motorcycles and explore the island. While on motorcycles, hike to the waterfall trail [View Full Entry]

Puerto Princesa is the capital of Palawan and is where you can take most flights from Manila and Cebu. I stayed at D'Lucky Garden which is close to the airport, offers Wi-fi, accepts credit cards, and has a decent restaurant. Tours can be booked directly from the hotel. Honda Bay was the first tour where you visit 3 islands in one day. I went on a day that started off cloudy with showers and ended up stormy with wind and waves. Lucky for me I remembered my rain jacket which was useful especially with the waves crashing over the bow of [View Full Entry]

October 1st marked the 60th anniversary of the Peoples Republic of China. Mid autumn festival also landed at the same time so we got eight entire days off of school. Even though weve only been in China for about 2 months, it is already feeling pretty comfortable so I was definitely ready for a new trip. My friends and I decided early that because this is the most heavily traveled time of year in China, we would avoid the even larger than usual crowds and leave the country. We had our hearts set on going to Lombok; a tiny island near [View Full Entry]

Philippines Day 135 We had to get up before 4am in order to head to the airport for our manila flight so we were both feeling pretty tired. The flight itself was fine and we landed about 11am but as we had flown to a cheap out of town airport we then had a 2 hour bus transfer to the city of manila. We were also really annoyed that the bus cost $8 each as we both thought this was very expensive for Asia but as the airport was in the middle of nowhere there was not enough competition to drive [View Full Entry]

Another laid back town Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Coron
I still remember how my Dad used to tell us how he hates riding small propeller passenger planes and I wasn’t expecting that I was gonna ride one today. I could hear the engine roaring outside during the entire flight and the plane making a clumsy stomp when we finally landed at the Busuanga Airport. The flight wasn’t too bad, thanks to the good weather, but I’d still rather ride the Airbus! Our tour guide Ate Cristy and Kuya Joseph (our driver) picked us up at the airport. It’s about 45 minutes ride from the Busuanga Airport to Coron town proper [View Full Entry]

Tarsier Asia » Philippines » Bohol » Tagbilaran
Tarsier : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Tarsier We went to the Chocolate Hills and saw the Tarsiers at the Tarsier Center back in April. Our guide was cool, did a good job taking us all over Bohol on his trike. The best part? Going shopping at the old lady's Native Craft store. I don't remember the name but it's downtown Tagbilaranm near McD's. She had a big story about each item for sale. She sold me a ''stuffed tarsier", only one problem. It was just sawdust glue and coconut fibers. I bought it anyway. My wife found a nice handbag she loved. The old woman [View Full Entry]
