If I died and woke up in the Cameron Highlands, I wouldn't mind. This place is phantastic! I met some people at the guesthouse in Tanah Ratah, and together we climbed a couple of mountains and one tree, around 2000m high, with great views of the jungle-covered valleys and tea plantations. Today we visited a tea factory. It's much more relaxing than Taman Negara, due to the cooler temperatures and total lack of leeches. I have been hiking every day and the trails were really steep and challenging at times, making me go to bed early and satisfied. I was planning to head back up to Thailand tomorrow, but now it looks like I will go to Pulau Pangkor for Christmas, with 2 Dutch guys and an American. I wish y'all some merry merry holidays!... read more

Well after another early start and long bus journey we arrived in The Cameron Highlands. Based in the Centre of the Peninsua at an elevation of at least 1500m this is the garden of malaysia and the most extensive hill station...and also the coldest place on earth (well in Malaysia at least) It was freezing here! We've had to put socks, proper shoes (ones that constrict my toes) and up to 3 tops at a time on whilst being here (and its actually only about 20 degrees at lowest, but have become acclimatized to the heat now!) Nonetheless, it's beautiful and a refreshing change and well worth freezing our diddlies off for. The drive was incredibly beautiful - a mix of tea plantations, lush greenery and jungle. All washed down with a healthy dose of rolling ... read more

We were up pretty early this morning ready for our tour around the Cameron Highlands! First stop was the rose garden, which had a view point at the top which we climbed millions of steps to get too...which was definitly worth it as the views were amazing over the cameron highlands and the vegetable farms below. Next stop was the butterfly & insect farm which had insects such as the rhino beatle and loads of snakes!! After that we went on to the strawberry farm where we sat and sampled their yummy milkshakes and jam obviously in strawberry flavour! Then we went onto the Tea factory and learnt how they produce it and grow then into the cafe for a quick sample. The final stops of the day were at the Honey Bee farm, the local ... read more

Went for a 33p breakfast of roti chanai & coffee & then caught the super VIP non-stop bus back to KL as we thought we would splash out after the saving we made at breakfast. However, it would appear that the non-stop bit only applies to the passengers alighting as the driver still repeatedly stopped to buy vegetables, prawn crackers & to put a bet on a horse. To make up time he proceeded to tear round the narrow mountain roads at breakneck speeds occasionally sounding the horn to let oncoming drivers know he was hurtling round the corner - why Malaysian drivers don't win the WRC every year I don't know.... read more

so we've arrived in Malaysia after having spent 3 days in Singapore. i quite liked singapore but i don't think it will be on my top list. ok the city is very clean and well organised but it's also quite strict in the sense that u're not allowed to do anything or u get fined. no smoking, no chewing-gum, so spitting, no crossing the road out the lines or it;s $100 each time. we took a bus on saturday to go to a small city called Melaka and i loved it so much that we ended up staying 3days instead of 1. people are so nice, always talking to you and asking you where u're from. all of them make the effort to speak a bit of yr language and i was so impressed that they ... read more

Who's idea was it to come here?!?!? oh,... it would probably be mine! It's flippin' freezing here! I've had to put socks, proper shoes (ones that constrict my toes) and up to 3 tops at a time on whilst being here (and its actually only about 20 degrees at lowest, but I've become acclimatized to the heat now!) Nonetheless, it's beautiful and a refreshing change to be here and well worth freezing my diddlies off for! Friday 14th October I got up at stupid o'clock to get the local bus to the bus station on Penang. I had been told to get the 25/29 bus... but I hadn't seen one in the 30 mins or so that I’d been stood waiting, so I stopped a number 69 bus and asked for the 'stesen bas?'... "eh?!"... erm... ... read more

Getting out - Cameron Islands After my one day of exploring KL I decided that I had probably had enough of the big smoke (literally) and on the adivice of fellow travellers, decided to head to the Cameron Highlands. The bus trip as long and a large proportion of it was travelling through the rainforest which covers something like 85% of Malaysia. It was good to see the level of development decreasing away from the city centres. A couple of thousand meters up the highlands offer a more temperate climate suitable for chilling out, for growing and for drinking tea. The weather up in the Cameron Islands was beautiful. The continuous sunshine kept the place warm and it was dry enough that you didn't really sweat unless undergoing some kind of physical exertion. On arriving at ... read more

I landed in Malaysia by default, with no plans and limited expectations. Flying from Sydney, Kuala Lumpur was the cheapest place I could find a ticket, so with days to kill and a budget not well suited for the Australian economy, I headed to Malaysia. As it turns out, it was not only an easy place to travel, but also provided a great introduction to Asian culture and cuisine. Malaysia has one of the strongest economies in South East Asia, the roads are good and the buses arrive on time, and English is widely-spoken. I found the people generally friendly and helpful, the cuisine divine, and the landscape diverse. Moreover, Malaysia is home to a fascinating mix of cultures, including Chinese and Indians (brought by the British for the tin mining industry during their rule), Malays, ... read more

Explored by James Cameron and subsequently named after him, the Cameron Highlands are famous for their tea plantations, fruit and vegetables and forests. I stayed in Fathers Guest House which was nice. The facilities and prices are good. (Wifi is intermittently available - weather permitting - from some nice antennas somewhere nearby) After an unpleasant night following a pleasant meal, I decided to make the most of the afternoon and go on a trip to an Orang Asli (Original People) village - the guest house operates tours to a local village, most of the villages that remain in their traditional state shun visitors, but this one due to a member of staff being the chiefs brothers wife welcomes the backpackers on one of the organised tours. The kids gather just prior to the arrival of the ... read more
