Instead of paying to go on a guide jungle trek today, we decided to adventure out on our own following trails number 4 & 6. Trail 4 is the gentlest of all the jungle treks in this area and I was surprised to see that the first section of it is even paved. The route runs alongside a little stream that wound through the forest and trickled down in litlle waterfalls every so often. The water was crystal clear and it would have been very picturesque if it hadn't been for all the garbage washed up on the banks. Along the way we passed a cool looking mini suspension bridge but it had fallen into disrepair and been roped off which was a shame. The path grew steadily more difficult and we were soon surrounded on ... read more

Gosh we have done LOADs of cool stuff since the last blog, when we left KL we got a bus (an economy, not an 'executive', the difference? four seats in a row instead of the luxury of only three.. no we are not sure either) to the Cameron Highlands. The highlands are the home of Malaysia's tea industry and it is so high up that it gets (shock) cold at night and rains every afternoon. we rocked up to a place called Father's Guest House (so called because it is on the site of a religious mission) where the rooms and dorms are in old Nissen (?) huts. We quickly met a new buddy called Patrick, a French Canadian maths teacher, and Chris an Australian /Malaysian on his holidays before heading up to Thailand. With our ... read more

Another bus journey takes me through some more wonderful scenery, mountains and winding roads, to Cameron Highlands. Which is situated in the North Western corner of the state of Pahang and is about 6000 ft (2,000 Meters) above sea level. The air is much cooler and fresher here, (more like home) and you are surrounded by valleys and mountains of vast green scenery, tea plantations, flower gardens, vegaetable farms and fruit orchards. There is a butterfly farm, honey bee farm, rose garden, cactus gardens, you name it, whatever grows, grows here. Apparently the fruit and veg have no seasons, because the environment and atmosphere allows them to grow all year round. Also very popular here is jungle trekking and a game of golf. I met a couple on the bus, who were on holiday from their ... read more

i've arrived in cameron highlands of malaysia and i feel like i'm back home in scotland - it's very green, lots of hills and it is cold and raining! in fact scotland is probably having much better weather than here right now. as always happens when i return from holiday i even got a cold! instead of doing the jungle trekking or visiting the butterfly farm etc i lay on the sofa or our swanky apartment and watched a Bruce Willis dvd with Jang, our tour leader. tonight all of the 26 tour members crowded into our swanky living room with cable to watch the England v Ecuador game. ... read more

The Cameron Highlands are about 1800 m above sea level so it's always cool and therefore a welcome relief from the heat of KL. Getting there though requires a drive up narrow roads with hairpin bends. Not for those who suffer from car-sickness. Add to that the crazy drivers (esp those driving 4WDs) who overtake when it's not really safe to do so makes the drive up quite scary. It was enough to bring out a liberal flow of expletives from Sean against those reckless drivers. Perhaps Sean was not in the best of moods as we had been in a car with no air-conditioning. Think of a sauna on wheels and you'll get the picture. It was raining 2 of 3 days we were there but we were still able to appreciate the beauty of ... read more

Tea! Lots of Tea! The Cameron Highlands are cool becaue they're cool. It rained pretty much everyday around 4:00 PM, the temperature was down right chilly. It was a nice break from the sweltering humidity. Chilly humidity can be fun! The tea plantation we visited was really beautiful of course. The 10.8 minute tour of the factory was thrilling. Short and sweet. "Here we are mashing up the tea. Then mash it again. Then we heat and mash. Then we heat mash, shred, mash, heat and mash again. Then you add hot water. Welcome to the gift shop." The place smelled phenomenal. Any questions kids? Good, now to the pictures. Gabe pretty much summed up the Cameron Highlands. The tea was delicious, the weather cool and the scenery pretty. We did manage to do another jungle ... read more

In need of a break from the heat, Brookes and I headed up to the Cameron Highlands for a few days of cooler weather and a change in scenery. The highlands are knows for their tea plantations and offering great treks. I signed up for a combo of both..Brookes wasn't quite up for such strenuous activity though so I was on my own, until i met the other members of my group the next morning...this was bound to be an adventure. In my group there was a young english couple, a german girl, myself, and a group of 3 friends one malaysian, one austrailian, and one vietnamese. the 3 guys were on a half day so we had to re-arrange the normal itinerary, no nig deal at the time. We set out in the bus (7 ... read more

We arrived in the Cameron Highlands in the late afternoon of the 6th April and stayed in a guesthouse that overlooked the town of Tanah Rata. As the name suggests the Cameron Highlands are pretty high, this coupled with the fact that we're pretty much in rainy season meant that it was lashing it down much of the time. Our guesthouse, Fathers guesthouse, came recommended from the place we stayed at in Penang- it looked ok on paper but it did feel as if we were back at school. There were signs everywhere in the guesthouse saying "don't bring in any food from outside the guesthouse" and loads of other rules- Felt like I was on a covert mission to finish a packet of crisps i'd bought from the supermarket that I was half way through. ... read more

After a day of relaxing, I awoke the next morning to a trail run with a Brit and an American also staying in the hostel's dorm. However, while running through the jungle I quickly learned that glasses are not the best equipment for that particular environment. For the first 10 minutes of the run I was fine, and then the lenses fogged up and the previous nights rain dripped on them. I quickly lost pace on the other two as I made my way blindly along the narrow jungle path. To add to the fun, small irrigation pipes wound along the trail, providing ample oppurtunities to slip and fall. Numerous times my right foot slid off the trail and into the ravine below, fortunately every time I was able to pull myself back onto the trail. ... read more
