Saya suka pedas lagi !! Yes your eyes do not decieve you, Steve has taken it upon himself to learn "I like it hot and spicy" in varying languages so that we are never served non-spicy food again....much to Sarah's and her stomach's dismay. Well, Kuala Lumpur did not disappoint us in this vein and between Malay dishes (who wants the spicy fish head special?) and the delicious indian currys we were on the road for a hot few days. We started off in Kuala Lumpur and spent 2 days wandering around the city - visiting little India and Chinatown, shopping, and viewing the city from the KL tower. Unfortunately as most of the city is closed on Mondays we didn't make it up the Petronas towers (but the KL is higher anyway :-)) After ... read more

Our journey from Penang to Cameron Highlands started off well. Free bus to the ferry terminal then free ferry to Butterworth. sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet :-) Bought tickets for VIP bus to Cameron Highlands easily enough. Today was going great :-) Halfway to Cameron Highlands we had a stopover in Ipoh. We were informed that we had to change buses. Hmmmmmm. We spotted our new bus and noted our VIP status had changed to VUP (very unimportant person). We found it hard to choose seats worth sitting on and when we did finally choose our seats, Chad had a lovely view of the road via the big hole in the floor. Eeeeeek ! For the next few hours we endured a bumpy and twisty ride up into the mountains where the draft from Chad's hole was gradually getting colder. ... read more

It was nice to know we were going back to Thailand. Maybe because we had spent more time there and the familiarity was comforting but I definately prefer Thailand to Malaysia. That's not to say I wouldn't like to come back, Malaysia is a big country and we only saw a very small part which was on the whole beautiful. The parts we did see were very heavily populated with Indians and Chinese immigrants, at times I forgot we were in Malaysia! :-) The journey back up the pennisular was to be our longest yet, leaving Tanah Rata in the Cameroon Highlands at 5:30pm, we would arrive in Krabi, Thailand, 1pm the next day. By getting the overnight bus we would save on accommodation, this saving would nearly pay for the transport, budgeting is the ... read more

We were feeling a little stiff from yesterday's walk so decided to go to one of the Boh tea plantations. Boh was set up by a British guy (and is still owned by his family) and is the number one tea in Malaysia! We got the bus to the butterfly farm (which we did not go into) and then had to walk 2 kms to the plantation factory. The sheer size of the plantation was impressive as we walked to the factory - all on hills so we were wondering if they still hired people to pluck the leaves. Once we got there, we had a cuppa tea in the cafe (how can we not!) - we tried cinnamon tea which was quite nice actually! We then had a tour of the factory - there ... read more

As James was feeling better today, we decided to do one of the 14 or so walks listed - we decided to do a mountain walk to Gunung Beremban. It was a good day for it, the sun was out and the ground not too wet. The walk took 6 hours in the end, but the sight from the top was worth it. This was definitely a proper jungle/mountain walk and some of it was so steep that James had to haul me up! The peak stood at around 6800m! It's funny how we keep bumping into the same people - we were walking up to the peak, when we saw the Czech guy that we had seen in Melaka and also KL. After chatting for a few minutes we carried on up whilst he ... read more

Still on the island this morning we had a Malay breakfast then took the boat to another island where we walked through the village then took a walk to a waterfall where we could swim. There were a number of leeches on the walk all of us got leeched, I was lucky only 2 got me but they were inside the shoes so did not notice them at first. we then returned for lunch then the afternoon was free. We then had a Malay dinner.... read more

We caught the 12:15 bus to Kula Kangsar then had a 40min mini bus ride then changed onto a speed boat and finally arrived at Suka Suka. This is a island in the middle of a lake owned by a Malay family. We had a chalet made out of wood and it was very hot and equipped with a mosquito net. We had a Malay bbq dinner.... read more

That's a nasty first picture, eh? Wish I could say I took it, but I didn't. A couple of friends who came with us to this did, and they were nice enough to let me copy their pics. Thanks Joanne & Yves! So why on earth was this guy getting a pole rammed through his face, anyway? And how the hell did Rob and I stumble upon this? Well, the guy was getting this done to celebrate (if that's what you want to call it) Thaipusam, and it was dumb luck that we found out about it. Rob and I were up north in the Cameron Highlands, and were just about to leave when the manager of the hotel we were staying gave us the rundown on Thaipusam. This ceremony takes place all over Malaysia (there ... read more

Since the weather was so much cooler up in the highlands I decided that it would be a good opportunity to go for a run so I dragged Jen out of bed nice and early (when it was still dark!) to go for a bit of altitude training! It was actually a really nice run although we did run downhill for the first half and then realised that the way back was going to be all up hill! I felt fine at the time but it took a good few days for my legs to recover! It was our last morning in the highlands before heading to the capital at lunch time so we made the most of it by visiting a strawberry farm where we had some delicious strawberry milkshakes as well as buying a ... read more
