If we thought the other mornings were early we hadn't seen anything! We got up at just gone 5 to get on another mini bus which took us to the bus station to hop on our VIP coach. It was awsome, only three seats wide and they were like seats you get in business class on planes. So we just sat back and relaxed most of the way up to the highlands. I say most of the way as when we started to get up the mountains the roads got super windy and I was very glad to have taken travel sickness tablets. We arrived at around lunch time. Much to my suprise I was cold when I got off the coach. We were told the highlands were very English but didn't expect the weather to ... read more

Caught a coach up to the Cameron highlands, and thank god a break from the heat, you guys may complain about the weather back home but i would have given anything to roll about in a foot of snow. Anyway, the place is covered entirely in tea bushes as far as the eye can see. We found his extremely English pub complete with a red phonebox outside and i had the first decent cup of tea for a about a fortnight. That night we went to this little chinese restaurant and had a steamboat, which is basically this big pot on a gas fire in the middle of your table which contains two types of soup, but wait that's not all, you also get everytype of meat, vegitable and fish which you can chuck in there ... read more

From Kuala Lumpur our first stop was the Cameron Highlands. I don't even know where to begin because it was so completely different from everything we've seen so far. To get there our bus climbed high into the mountains on the windiest road I've ever travelled on by bus (yes, worse than New Zealand). The nice thing about being so high was that the air was very cool and at this point we really needed a break from the heat and humidity. It was the perfect two day retreat. Our hostel, although lacking in the sleeping and bathing areas, was situated in the most beautiful setting. It was right on a hill overlooking deep forests and many gardens (flower and vegetable). The Cameron Highlands is a huge farming area for fruits, vegetables, flowers, and tea. Their ... read more

Sorry it's been such a long time since we updated, we sure have been around. Kuala Lumpur We spent a couple of days in KL, enjoying the scenery and such. We saw the Petronas twin towers. They are the tallest twin towers in the world, and also has the highest skybridge in the world! Our guesthouse was called "Le Village", located in Chinatown, smelled strongly of incense and was very cozy. The only downside to this were the bedbugs and cockroaches at night... We spent a few hours each day just walking around the city seeing the sights. We loved the architecture and modern style of the city. It was a really neat place to see. It was a huge change from Thailand. We decided to journey to the Batu Caves so we took a city ... read more

Cameron Highlands: Mayasia's Tea Region January 24-26, 2007 After 4 days in Kuala Lumpur, we decided to take a bus to the Cameron Highlands. We were happy to be leaving KL for cooler temperatures (25 degrees) and a slower-pace of life. The taxi ride to the bus station was an adventure in itself. At any one time, there were 6-8 vehicles (motorcycles and cars) all "sharing" a 4-lane road. Several motorists cut in front of us with less than a meter of a gap. I was amazed that we did not witness any traffic accidents and that the taxi driver did not have road rage. Incidentally, the taxi driver charged us an extra 10 ringets due to our "extra cargo" (ie., our 3 backpacks). Immediately after we got out of the taxi, a guy pounced on ... read more

And on to the Cameron Highlands... Named after the English Gentleman who mapped the hills in this area and opened the door to a flood of other British folk to come and build their dwellings here. Consequently, a lot of mock tudor, thatched roofed and stone built houses still stand in the green pastures of this cool, temperate climate. On this occasion the Brits were right, as the cool climes still attract many a Malaysian holiday maker or city worker, trying to escape the heat and noise of KL, at the weekend. Before jumping straight into the Cameron Highlands we had to stop at the fascinating temples of Perak and Sam Poh, built inside huge limestone caverns just outside of Ipoh. These huge Karst caves filled with massive Buddha idols are simply breathtaking, as is the ... read more

At the KL bus station we grabbed traditional Malay breakfast which is basically spring rolls, sweet pancakes, sweet cakes, rice in banana leaves etc - all which is very lovely and tasty! The bus is very basic and we experienced the rudeness again with everyone pushing infront of everyone, even the little old nun was pushed out the way! tut tut! The journey took 4ish hours on very windy roads which started to make me a bit nauseas but proudly I stayed strong! At the bus station in Cameron Highlands there were lots of touts waiting for us and as we were hungry and tired we went with the man who seemed the nicest and had the best sounding leaflet called Daniels lodge. Its very basic but has interent and organises tours and very good location ... read more

After waking up at a modest hour (after the night before!) we headed down to pick up our hire car for the next few days... not much to shout about, it was an automatic, gold Proton Wira with no acceleration, such a monster to drive. Bearing in mind Dan can barely fit in it Clare has become the designated driver for the tour. Dodging the suicide motor bikes around George Town we headed over one of the longest bridges in the world to the mainland and in to Malaysia itself- expertly navigated by Dan - not getting lost once. After a 4 hour drive consisting of both modern motorways followed by very tight mountainous roads littered again with suicide bikers and coaches we arrived in the Cameron Highlands! Our accomodation in the CH is The Lakehouse, ... read more

Well we went on a tour with the best guide ever. He knew so much and told us everything. We went to the highest point in Cameron Highlands and had some amazing views. Then went on a Mossy forest walk. Yep it was mossy! Its so cool here though its great, especially after the hunidity of the national park. Saw some Pitcher plants which are the ones which catch flies. Then saw the tea plantations then to the factory and saw how they get from leaves to tea bags. Then had the best cup of tea EVER. Its calloed Boh tea and they only supply SE Asia. Not sure if it is because i havent had a cup of tea for 4 weeks since at home or that it was the best tea ever but i ... read more
