An easy bus ride south and we arrived in Campeche, a beautifully restored walled city on the coast of the gulf of Mexico. Our plan was to chill out in a nice hotel with a swimming pool etc, this was our last few days of our holiday and we were going to enjoy it We had a lovely time in the Ocean View hotel, we enjoyed lazing around the pool and even had a couple of workouts, which my body continually reminded me about. The Mexican bicentennial holiday period was in full swing now, lots of free festivals and a great party atmosphere, things were going well then…. As we were catching an overnight bus to Mexico City Sharon checked online for any government warnings, I didn’t mention it in previous blogs but a few night ... read more

Merida is nothing like Cancun or Playa del Carmen and if you want to experience Mexican culture whilst staying on the Yucatan peninsula then this is a great place to go. We travelled across to the largest city in the region on a local bus from Cancun which took about five hours. We then used the tried and tested Tripadviser website to guide us to our hotel. This involved a hike across the historical centre; don’t you hate it when the best hotels seem the furthest away from the bus station The 30 minutes of exercise was worth it! Hotel Julamis has a boutique hotel feel whilst also feeling like a second home, the two guys who run it, Mel and Erid, do a great job. I got a lovely bottle of red wine for my ... read more

We got the super fast ferry from Isla Mujeres to Puerto Juraz and got a cab directly to Gaby Suites which is in downtown Cancun. Very nice hotel with fantastic modern bathrooms and large LCD tv on the wall…. sweet People had told us how Cancun was very Americanised but as we wandered around the downtown area it wasn’t really like that. The next day we got the free hotel minibus to Isla Cancun, the main hotel zone and found the luxury resorts, modern shopping malls, nightclubs and bars. We spent the day at a beach club (50MXN each includes towel, sunlounge, pool, etc) it was like a night club during the day, extra loud music, people sipping glamorous cocktails and drinking ice cold beers, we felt pressured to join in!! In the evening we checked ... read more

Chad had high hopes for this island: he was hoping it was going to be just like the name and have lots of women but fortunately for me there were men there too A quick taxi ride from the bus station (50MXN) to Puerto Jarez then a fast ferry (70MXN each) had us arriving on Isla Mujeres to be greeted by brilliant white sand and clear turquoise waters I left Chad under a tree on the beach whilst I searched for a suitable hotel for us to stay in. I looked at a few, some of which were seriously overpriced, but luckily I spotted Hotel Cabanas Maria del Mar right on the best beach on the island, Playa Norte. They had a special deal on their modern rooms (490MXN) which had a king size bed, fridge, ... read more

Within 15 seconds of arriving in Playa del Carmen I was offered drugs on the street, over the years this has happened many times but I have never taken up the offer. Ok, once, many years ago at the Notting Hill carnival, but that was a special occasion and the dealer accidentally dropped another bag which I ‘accidentally’ covered with my foot, in a flash he had merged into the crowd and his inflated price became a bargain! those were the days ….. Anyway, back to Playa Del Carmen… We had 4 days here and I was offered drugs constantly, people would use an excuse of selling something to me, like a hat or a tattoo, then when in close, reel off a list of drugs that would make a chemist proud, Playa del Carmen is ... read more

I remember reading Tulum described as "Eco Chic" and I think the phrase describes it well. We based ourselves in Tulum pueblo, the town, about 1km or so from the beach but with a larger choice of restaurants, bars and more importantly, cheap hotels. We were lucky enough to find a pretty new hotel with a little kitchenette (Hotel Nadia Suites 500MXN) just off the main road. The bed and pillows were ultra comfy, the best on this trip so far, we would definitely recommend this place. We are now entering the main tourist area of Mexico, although Tulum is not yet overdeveloped it does have an international feel, with more shops selling souvenirs and more types of restaurants catering for wider tastes, a perfect place to be now our appetite is back on track! We’ve ... read more

We arrived at Chetumal in the wee small hours of the morning and shared a taxi into the town centre with a French girl who was travelling on her own. She had not booked anything and didn’t have any idea where to go, in my opinion she was pretty lucky we were there as no-one else got off the bus and the place was deserted, I must be getting old and sensible . We ended up at a very cheap hotel which had no air con and was a real sweat box to us air conditioned snobs!!! Needless to say, we moved out very early the next morning to a hotel over the road (Hotel Ghandi (400MXN) air con etc). Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo state and our reason for stopping here was to ... read more

We slowly descended the mountains into the hot and humid lowlands, our 6 hour bus trip took in some magical scenery before arriving at our destination, the ruins of Palenque. This is one of the grand archaeological sites of Mexico, the ancient Mayan city is set amongst thick forest mountains and the jungle certainly adds to the mysterious feel of the ruins. We based ourselves in the La Canada area, 5 miles from the ruins, at a pretty decent place called Hotel Chablis (550 MXN). The air conditioning was a life saver as the humidity was very draining! We easily flagged down a collectivo (local minibus) going to the ruins (10 pesos each) and spent most of a day exploring the temples, palace and museum. This magnificent city dates back to early 300 BC and much ... read more

San Cristobal de las Casas is an old colonial town nestled in the mountains of the state of Chiapas. The Maya, who are descended from an ancient and indigenious civilization, have a strong presence here. It is a market town where many indigenous people come from their villages to sell their wares. Sharon is not always keen on pottering around the narrow markets but although they can be a bit chaotic and strange smelling, we saw some absolutely amazing handmade crafts. Most of our time in San Cristobal was spent within a ½hr walking radius of our hotel. My need to flee to the throne was affecting my desire to explore this beautiful town. However, my desire for a hot water bottle and a good chick flick increased with every bout of stomach cramps! Maybe swapping ... read more

Imagine trying to sleep on a roller coaster - well, the night bus to Puerto Escondido was just like that ! Nine hours of twists and turns and a multitude of speed bumps: the journey lived up to its reputation of being one helluva ride ! Luckily enough, Sharon had had plenty of ginger biscuits to keep her travel sickness at bay. Still, we had made it to the beach where there would be plenty of time for sleeping We arrived at 6am and took a short taxi ride to Zicatela beach, an internationally renowned surfers paradise. We stumbled upon Cafecito, a very popular hangout for breakfast and watched as the town slowly woke up. It felt like being in Manly, with the early morning joggers and the surfers studying the waves, we felt at home ... read more
