We tried to block out the smell as we hop-scotched past the neatly stacked carcasses on our pursuit for Tokyo’s Shangri-La of epicurean delight. Pools of blood covered the floor like remnants of some terrible massacre. It was 9:00 AM and we were determined to locate some of the freshest sushi in the World at Ginza Tsukiji Fish Market… for breakfast. Gina, Jess and I had spent the previous night, a Sunday, trying to locate a non-existent nightlife in Tokyo’s Roppongi district. After hours of searching, the most action we found was a lifelike automated construction sign blurting out warnings in Japanese. Undeterred and eager to tune in Tokyo, we managed to ensure a less than pleasant night’s sleep with the few open locales we stumbled upon. The next morning arrived like an unpopular relative. Tokyo Tokyo is beyond my grasp. Its size, its population, its lack of grid is nearly overwhelming. No, actually, it is overwhelming. It’s so thoroughly massive that you don’t even realize how little you’re actually seeing. A bird’s eye view would have been helpful for perspective but I never left the worm’s eye view. My whole understanding of the city is based on the main circular path of the metro map which itself is only conceptual. So basically, even after spending 10 days there, my understanding of Tokyo is at best, conceptual. This vague understanding was dotted with distinct experiences in dining, shopping, and sumo. The udon noodle shops were incredible, and plenty reasonable. The largest fish market in the world was impressively, well, large. Massive frozen tunas were moved about, marked in red paint, ... read more

It was day two in Japan and we were officially out of clean clothing. Gene, sans boxer shorts, struggled to keep up his stretched, worn-out jeans. Our first priority of the morning was to locate a Laundromat, which would not prove easy in the high class shopping district of Ginza. However, with directions from the concierge and a map in tow, we taxied out of Ginza in search of a self-service laundry. Jess, not quite entertained with the task of doing laundry, set out across the street to hit up the outside vending machine for two cans of Kirin, a Japanese-made beer. Only Jess could make a celebration out of doing laundry. With a 30-minute wash cycle ahead of us, we decided to venture out and explore what appeared to be a local business district. However, ... read more

As we disembarked from the plane after touching down in Narita, Japan, I could see Gene’s face light up in anticipation of our upcoming meeting with his best friend, Jess, who would be traveling with us throughout our entire stay in Japan. As we navigated through the airport, Gene’s eyes scanned our surroundings for any sign of Jess, to no avail. We were not yet aware that Jess’s plane from New York had landed early, which would have required him to wait at the airport for another 5½ hours before we landed. We gave up hope when Jess was nowhere to be found at the baggage claim and assumed that he had already headed for our hotel. We exchanged our paperwork for Japan Rail Passes and rushed to make the train for our first experience on ... read more

Day 18 Unfortunately it was the last day of our rail pass and we seemed to have found our way as far away from Tokyo, where we are flying from on Monday, as we possibly could. So after another early start we caught the 7:30 ish train to wend our way back to the capital. After settling into the hostel, we were on a mission. Challenge 2 from Mr Murray of Waverley Towers had been set and the Haywards were on the case. Challenge 2 had arrived by diplomatic bag only yesterday and stated: Challenge the Haywards - To locate and capture with photographic evidence a picture of Mariah Carey with Japanese writing, and for Mark to recreate the aformentioned Mariah pose! Not ones to shy away from challenges, we set about our arduous task ... read more

Following an email Al left for me, I followed her instructions to get to Shin-Kawasaki rail station. From here I was supposed to have a short 10min walk straight down the hill to the golf range. Um...it didn't quite work out that way! Al had told me I would come across a small park on my right and the range would be on the left. After seeing a park on the opposite side and noticing the Linx was also on the other side to what she said I figured I had obviously taken a wrong turn. I walked back to the station and star... read more

So, here we are, almost at the end of our vacation. So I thgought I'd put in a word. And the word is Toys R Us. OK. It's 3 words. But let me say this, they got some awsome shit. Now, beyond that, we spent most of today in Kamakura, home of this massive copper Buddha, and many many shrines. It was all very serene and beautiful and you will all have to see the photos when we get back. Kamakura is about 1 hour outside of Tokyo by train and it has this nice, small town feel. The grounds of the shrines we visited were all very well landscaped and it was nice touch of greenery after a week of cement. We leave for Kyoto tomorrow for 2 days of Japanese History and culture and ... read more

Hello all, So, despite the warnings and the small internal voice of my better judgement, I decided to catch the overnight bus after work on Saturday to Tokyo. It is a fraction of the price of the train, and of course, there is a reason! Locals warned me not to take it, the sales people tried to gesture wildly that the seats were - how to say - Japanese size - and my students just laughed. But, of course, that just gave me more conviction ;0) So, I was off after class and a nice izakaya with some students and Geoff, which put me in a good mood. Also, after all the warnings, I had prepared myself for the worst, so luckily I was amused by my seat companion (an oversized Japanese man who decided ... read more
