It's a real old traditional thing where everyone has picnics in some of the big parks under the cherry blossom trees, drinking and eating the day away. I was lucky enough to go to a party with one of my sister's English groups. It was pretty much all I coul... read more

Hi, it's Beth. We have been in Tokyo since March 26th but we leave in just two days. We have conflicting feelings about leaving because we really like it here-if it weren't for the cost! And the cost of things is the reason we need to be on our way. Well, we knew that before we got here so have been very grateful to everybody who let us stay in their house. The kids have really liked Japan-a bit of the west in the east. They have had fun playing with friends' children and of course the food has been a big draw. The bravest anybody got was to try squid and would you ever have guessed it was Samir who liked it?! Being here has been a little like being in London because of ... read more

Hi Everyone, (Note you can click on any picture to see a larger version of it) I have a lot of things on my wish list to do while we are here in Japan, but without a doubt at the top of the list was to see the cherry trees in bloom in the spring. Last weekend they were at thier peak, and it was glorious! Marc took friday off, and I skipped my Japanese lesson so we could go explore. There are cherry trees everywhere, but there ares several places where they were planted "en masse" and those areas are the most popular for "cherry blossom viewing" On Friday we went to the moat around the Imperor's Palace. It is just breathtaking. They are on both sides of the moat, and we could could ... read more

Ok everyone, this is Rob again. We are being really lazy with this blog cuz well we are just too pooped to have to think of things to write. Basically since the 1st, we have been shopping, and seeing a lot of shrines and riding the crazy rail system they have here. Only a few things that you all should ask us about so far is NamjaTown, which was sponsored by Namco, the creators of PacMan....but this was pretty odd. Something about splicing together a mix of cartoon characters, Ice-Cream museum, a spa, and a haunted house type deally was quite entertaining. Also, we hit Disney Sea, the aquatic version of disneyland and had a great time there, put in a good 14 hours. Highlights from that was the Tower or Terror, Pork Ribs, and Rob ... read more

A big g'day from Omori, Tokyo! After a few goodbye tears at the airport with my parents, and 10 hours later, I made it to Narita airport, Tokyo 6.30am Wednesday. (And yeh, thanks for Al's number dad, I needed to put it down when I went through customs and used it to find where she was waiting!) You could almost think you were in Strathfield or Chatswood at the airport but as you walk through the streets you notice that there are absolutely no Caucasians...everyone is Japanese! Funny that. And everyone rides bikes on the footpath, it's pretty amazing that people don't get run over. People seem to find Westerners interesting, and acknowledge you on the streets sometimes...bizarre, but kinda cool. I tried sashimi ('raw fish') for the first time ever last night. Can't say ... read more

Ok so my blog is VERY late, and I'm now in London but better late than never! Japan was almost 2 months ago now, but I have to say it was amazing. It's possibly one of the most interesting countries you could visit. I absolutely loved it and despite it being very different I could imagine living and working there. Where to start? I landed in Tokyo and spent a week there getting around with another lovely traveller, Fran (from Ireland) who was also on a round the world trip. Tokyo is as you would imagine a massive place so there's a lot of ground to cover. But with the impeccably run subway system (London eat your heart out) it makes getting around so easy. Our first stop was in bustling Shinjuku - apparently busiest ... read more

OK everyone sorry for the offical update its been a long time coming. entry by Rob March29th: we arrive in the late afternoon and right away off the plane, the language barrier obstacle comes into effect. thank goodness for some partially english speaking people on the transit counter otherwise we wouldn't have been able to leave the airport. After a 50 min train ride we were at our stop in Nishi-Kawaguchi. Sort of the East Van of stops in tokyo, kindy shady but safe once you realize that japanese people aren't hostile at all. Dodging people trying to get us into the Pachinko Parlors, we find our hotel; A quaint little house if you want to call it that off of one of the side streets. We find out our reservations have not been registered, so ... read more

First night, I have no subway map, no japanese address of the place I'm staying, headed to Tokyo. When I first arrived to Tokyo airport nothing sounds like an English-land, of course. Broken English is spoken here and there if you're lucky. People here only speak English when they absolutely have to. I suppose if you are a businessman and probably have a translator waiting in your hotel, it's different. But if your purpose is to travel in Japan, some japanese is a must. The farther away from airport you go the more difficult it will become communicating to people in English. I arrived pretty late at Asakusa Station, around 9 pm. Then a little panic started. No one understands me, even the taxi driver. I should have known they can't read latin characters. Gladly, one ... read more

April 1st: Today we hit Harajuku because sunday was the day that all the teenagers come out in their gothic outfits and actually become a spectacle for tourists and fashion people alike. We got off the Harajuku station rail station and headed toward the Meiji Shrine first before hitting all the stores. On the way we stopped to take pictures of some people in their interesting outfits and the guy who was giving away free hugs, that was generous. The most entertaining was the one man who just randomly set up a boombox on the bridge before the shrine and just started to dance and sing. We heard the music playing, saw the feet start tapping.....and got it all on video. The shopping afterward was intense as easily a thousand people tried to cram down a ... read more

Samir's article. Samir here, alive and dry (and Im only saying that because there was an earthquake only 300 miles away from Tokyo, which brought up a tsunami warning) and finally in TOKYO!!! We've left the persisting sales people of India, and since most of our conversations went like this: "You want henna? Ok I give you henna." "No, I dont want henna." "Yes, you want henna. I give you henna." "No, I don't want henna." "How about baby? Baby like henna?" "No, baby doesn't like henna." "Yes, baby like henna. Baby want henna." "No baby DOESN'T want henna!" we were pretty glad to leave. We waited awhile for our first flight which came at 11 pm, and then we stopped in Malaysia for an hour or so and then flew to Tokyo. We're staying ... read more
